Former Commander: Bethel Holiday 'Utter Nonsense'

Commodore Tellis Bethel

By KHRISNA RUSSELL
Deputy Chief Reporter
krussell@tribunemedia.net

A former commander of the Royal Bahamas Defence Force last night dismissed Commodore Tellis Bethel’s enforced leave from the organisation as “utter nonsense”.

Former Commodore Clifford “Butch” Scavella’s criticism came as Bethel’s replacement for his enforced leave - Commander Dr Raymond King - insisted Bethel’s departure would not affect hurricane relief efforts nor other RBDF duties. Prime Minister Dr Hubert Minnis has said Dr King’s appointment as acting commander came due to Commodore Tellis Bethel’s accumulation of a large sum for his vacation. The Minnis administration’s policy is not to pay individuals for extended periods of vacation time in such instances.

In this case, while Commodore Bethel is on three months vacation leave, Dr King has been appointed acting commander. The announcement came earlier this month.  Read more >>

By Royston Jones Jr.

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Billing the country’s potential cannabis industry as a “billion dollar” business, Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) Deputy Leader Chester Cooper said the nation continues to miss out on the substantial stimulus of a regulated sector to countries such as Canada and the United States.

Addressing PLPs at the party’s headquarters on Farrington Road, Cooper said a PLP-administration, once elected, would be guided on the issue, like others facing the nation, by research, experts and public sentiment, and not any one view, including his own.  Read more >>

The Bahamas Resounds It’s 14 Island Messaging At Top National Art Fair
Sales Manager Phylia Shivers engages founder Howard Alan at Las Olas Art Show.
FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida – October 22, 2019 – The Islands Of The Bahamas (TIOTB) stood out this past weekend, taking part in an annual art show in Fort Lauderdale Florida hosted by Howard Alan Events. The show took place October 19th-20th on Las Olas Boulevard with hundreds of exhibitors’ works on display and thousands of passers-by on foot.
Though this is the second year that TIOTB have participated, Howard Alan made this year extra special by inviting the marketing team to participate free of charge. An act of kindness to further help hurricane relief efforts. The event provided an opportunity for The Bahamas to resound its current messaging that there are14 Islands open and ready to welcome visitors with open arms.

Howard Alan, founder of the event, shared his love and enthusiasm for Bahamian relief efforts. “I am so happy that I am able to help in the way that I can. After all we are all connected, right?” Alan shared.
The works of young Bahamian artist, Idanya Clarke, were on display at The Bahamas booth during the outdoor art event, and was well received by visitors.
The Bahamas Tourist Office (BTO) Florida marketing team, along with the young artist, got to see her work being appreciated by the thousands that strolled through the area over the two- day weekend of the popular art show. The Bahamas’ involvement at the Fair was primarily to reiterate the current message that post Hurricane Dorian, 14 Islands are still open for business in a relaxed and cultural environment.
Sales Manager, Phylia Shivers, noted that being a part of the show provided a major forum for the work of the young Bahamian artist to be showcased and exposed to Floridians but was more excited about the message that The Bahamas is continuing to put out.
Shivers stated, “It’s always a pleasure to work with local talent, it is indicative of the beauty of The Bahamas. But this is much bigger than art and bigger than a sales initiative. This is about culture and love of country and collaborating with persons with whom we have a common goal. To show our country some love.”

MARSH HARBOUR, The Bahamas --  It’s been nearly two months since Hurricane Dorian hammered the Bahamas, killing dozens of people and levelling homes. Since then, little has changed as the island nation struggles to rebuild.

Rebuilding efforts have yet to start, leaving thousands of people without a place to live. Many have sought refuge in nearby Florida. As of late September, 600 people were still considered missing with the official death toll at 56.

The port of Marsh Harbour was once bustling, packed with marinas and restaurants. These days, there is little activity.  Read more >>

Makaio playing football, left; on the golf course, centre; and with the founder of A Hand Up Foundation, Mark Brown.

By FELICITY DARVILLE

I was blown away by the thoughts of a ten-year-old boy who was asked to jot down in his own words some sentences about the abuse of children. I’ve known Makaio Mackey to be a high achiever since he was very young. Like my son Elijah, Makaio is an avid golfer. His mother India would rave about Elijah’s golfing skills and she felt encouraged that her son would do well in the sport.

Elijah is now 23 and still hitting the green as often as possible. Makaio’s mom is teaching her son the importance of stickability in life. She has no problem convincing him to come into his own. He is finding his own ways of self expression. When Makaio found out that his mom’s co-worker had an organisation that regularly visits children’s homes in The Bahamas, he immediately wanted to be a part. He told his mother he wanted to read to the kids and thus began a relationship between him and the children that is likely to last a lifetime.  Read more >>

Simple but Effective Diet Ideas for a Healthier Lifestyle

Simple but Effective Diet Ideas for a Healthier Lifestyle

Changing your diet and eating habits can help you create a healthier lifestyle. And don’t we all want to be a little bit healthier? Taking action in your life now can have huge benefits down the roadfrom increased energy and stronger bones to reducing your risks for certain diseases. And while you’re on the road to better health you might as well wear a pair of comfortable sandals.

Make a Colorful Plate

According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), your plate should be half fruits and veggies, with a focus on whole fruits and varying vegetables. The other half should be split between whole grains and a protein (like meat, poultry, seafood, beans, eggs, etc.).

Don’t Forget Dairy

Milk and dairy products help build strong bones. One cup of milk, yogurt, soy milk or cheese is recommended in your daily diet. The USDA suggests finding fat-free or low-fat dairy options.

Avoid Sugary Drinks

Along with the excessive calories, sugary drinksespecially diet sodacan also make you hungry. And consuming high levels of sugar can cause an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease and lead to tooth decay.

Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth

There are simple and healthier replacements when you’re craving cookies, cakes, and candy. Try a rice cake with nut butter and honey or baked pears with cinnamon.

Skip Happy Hour

Wine, beer and other cocktails can add empty calories to your diet. If you want a low-calorie alcoholic beverage, try a vodka soda with a squeeze of lime or a glass of champagne.

Say “No” to Late-Night Snacking

Eating a meal or snack late in the evening can lead to weight gain because your body isn’t burning as much fat while sleeping as it does during the day. Your body ends up storing more carbohydrates.

Don’t Starve Yourself

Give yourself a cheat day where you can eat that piece of chocolate cake or have that cheeseburger. It takes 3,500 calories to add 1 pound of fat, so as long as you’re not overeating unhealthy foods all day, you can treat yourself to your favorite (and maybe not-so-healthy) food without feeling guilty.

Step on the Scale at Sunrise

To get the most accurate number on the scale, weigh yourself first thing in the morning before you eat or drink anything. If you are keeping track of your progress, make sure to weigh yourself on the same scale at the same time each day (or same time each week).

These tips will help you move toward a healthier lifestyle, but remember that exercise is also a key part of the equation. Make sure you are moving your body at least two and a half hours a day. It sounds like a lot but you could spread it out. This could mean commuting to and from work by bike, gardening in the backyard, even simply walking (just make sure to find some supportive sneakers).

Bahamian Influencers: The Not So White Saviour Complex.
Dear Readers,

This week's Editorial is a feature from the blog 10th Year Seniors on the recent trend of Bahamian influencers co-opting the pain of Dorian survivors to further their own brands.

Jimmy’s Wines & Spirits officially reopened its doors, once again welcoming its scores of loyal customers as well as a staff complement of at least 12 people who will resume work.

“We are so proud of our staff who have really made this possible,” said Donny Delahey, BBB Grand Bahama General Manager. “19 of our employees here in Freeport experienced extensive damage to their homes but they have been present every day and we’ve worked as a team to ensure that we could hit this milestone as quickly as possible.”
Following Hurricane Dorian, the brewery was forced to temporarily shutter its operation due to severe flood damage and has since embarked on a six-month-long rebuild strategy.
The rebuilding process, which begun in earnest a week after Hurricane Dorian’s storm surge covered the brewery in nearly 5ft of water, includes the restoration of the physical structure of the premises, but also the replacement of the company’s state of the art brewing equipment.

Wage Tolerance Not Terror
Haitians Are Humans Too: An opportunity to pause and think
In the wake of Hurricane Dorian, a great deal of public conversation has focused on the injunction prohibiting demolition of communities of Haitian ethnicity called Shanty Towns.

Despite the noise in the market, the injunction is simply an order made by the Supreme Court to maintain the status quo until trial of the Judicial Review which is itself very discreet and self-contained to determine whether the process undertaken by the Government to eradicate Shanty Towns was lawful and constitutional. The injunction applies to all communities in New Providence as well as the properties occupied by certain of the 177 plaintiffs in Abaco. The merit, or lack thereof, is a matter for the courts, and should be left in the hands of our independent judiciary.

It is regrettable that the Prime Minister and his new ally, Fred Mitchell, have chosen to politicize this through demagogic hyperbole in Parliament.
Diabetes Mellitus, the Fifth Leading Cause of Death in The Bahamas
Minister of Health, the Hon. Dr. Duane Sands said Diabetes Mellitus is a devastating and costly non-communicable disease and is the fifth leading cause of death in The Bahamas.
“The prevalence of diabetes increased from 6.7 per cent to 9.2 per cent in 2005, and has now reached epidemic proportions at 13.6 per cent in 2019.

Our rate stands at 37.9 deaths per 100,000 persons due to diabetes,” Dr. Sands said at the Bahamas Podiatric Medical Association, in conjunction with the Academy of Minimally Invasive Foot and Ankle Surgery’s 2nd Annual International Podiatry Conference held at Melia Nassau Beach resort, Friday, October 25, 2019.

He noted that many persons with uncontrolled diabetes experience foot and ankle ailments and complications.

 By Daphne Ewing-Chow

Hurricane Dorian, which battered the Bahamas between September 1st and 3rd 2019, has devastated the islands’ $75 million Caribbean spiny lobster fishery. The vital economic sector, which employs more than 9,000 Bahamians, will take years to rebuild from the category-5 hurricane.

A Post-Disaster Damage and Needs Assessment carried out by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), under the leadership of Dr. Iris Monnereau and in collaboration with the government of the Bahamas, during October 2019, confirmed that nearly 80% of the fisheries sector and its supporting infrastructure, including lobster and conch collection centres in Grand Bahama and Abaco, ranged from being significantly damaged to completely destroyed.  Read more >>

Boaters, industry associations and boatbuilders all became first responders in the days — and weeks — after Dorian devastated the northern Bahamas.

Marsh Harbour, Abaco, was one of the hardest-hit areas in the Bahamas. Dorian left 1.5 billion pounds of debris behind. Little has changed since the hurricane. (Abaco Forever)

By Michael Verdon

When Hurricane Dorian leveled entire towns on Grand Bahama, Abaco and the northern out islands Sept. 1, South Florida’s boating communities, along with many industry groups, were eager to respond. But the Category 5 storm, with 185-mph winds and gusts exceeding 200 mph, dumped up to 20 inches of rain and sat over the islands for 40 hours. Dorian then took two days to move up the Florida coast, forcing hundreds of good-Samaritan boaters to delay relief efforts.  Read more >>

NASSAU, Bahamas (CMC) — Health Minister Dr Duane Sands has announced that, effective December 1, all sugary drinks will be banned from Government health care facilities and public schools.

Initially, the Dr Hubert Minnis-led Administration, considered a sugary drinks tax, that was then changed to a ban on the drinks, however, due to impact of Hurricane Dorian, the health ministry decided to delay to implementation.

“People are killing themselves,” said Sands, in making the announcement on Wednesday.  Read more >>

7,000 motorists awaiting driver’s licenses

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The backlog for driver’s licenses at the Road Traffic Department has left thousands without cards just weeks after it became a criminal offense to drive without one.

A high-ranking official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed some 7,000 licenses have to be printed and distributed after the department ran low on cards earlier this month.

Those cards reportedly arrived in the country on Monday, and the official suggested the department will consider allowing backlogged motorists to pick up their cards on weekends only to avoid disruption of day-to-day operations .

Minister of Transport and Local Government Renward Wells told Eyewitness News yesterday the matter has been sorted out and cards are now available for people to receive.

The government recently amended the Road Traffic Act to make it a criminal offense for a driver to fail to produce a driver’s license on request of a uniformed officer.

The failure to do so could lead to an arrest.

Police traffic division Superintendent Marino Hinds said yesterday police are using their discretion to deal with the matter.  Read more >>
