July 14, 2016 – The Hack<IT> and STEMBoard teams are pleased to welcome Barrington Irving as this year’s keynote speaker for this year’s STEM camp in Nassau, The Bahamas.

Irving, born in Jamaica, was the first Jamaican and the first black man to fly around the world by himself. He will address attendees on the final day of Hack<IT> 2016, scheduled for July 18-23 at the St. Andrew’s School in Nassau. The event begins at 10 a.m.

Irving achieved his solo flight in 2007, when he was 23, often working odd jobs in exchange for flying lessons to pursue his goal. As a senior aerospace engineering student at Florida Memorial University, he completed his 24,600-mile flight around the world in an airplane named “Inspiration.”

“The Caribbean contains limitless potential of talent, but the landscape must be broadened,” Irving said. “Through technology, data and entrepreneurship, so many are growing successful companies in these industries and it’s time we in the Caribbean capitalize on that growth.”

Hack<IT> 2016 will provide six days of free, hands-on STEM instruction for public and private Bahamian students in grades 9-12. With a focus on technology entrepreneurship, the camp will give each student an opportunity to select an engineering track, apply their knowledge to an issue of social impact within the Bahamas and compete for prizes

The camp is the brainchild of Bahamian American Aisha Bowe, the first youngest Caribbean American rocket scientist to work with NASA before launching her company, STEMBoard.
