 The end of August brings the opening of a new exhibition in our Double Dutch series, "Hot Water." Join us at 7 p.m., on Thursday, August 23rd for the opening reception and artists' talk. The NE9 deadline has been extended! Jurors announced, deadline extended In preparation for the NE9, set to open on Thursday, December 13th, the deadline for the Call For Works has been extended by one week, ending on Sunday, August 26th, given several recent developments that positively impact the call and its mission. We are thrilled to reveal the jury for the NAGB's 9th National Exhibtion – “The Fruit and the Seed” – which includes Mr. Derek Rolle, the Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of The Bahamas; Mr. John Cox, Former Chief Curator at the NAGB and present Artistic Director at The Current Studios at Baha Mar; and Mr. Allan P. Wallace, national artist and instigator. Joining them will be NAGB Chief Curator, Holly Bynoe along with two international curators, Naima J. Keith, Deputy Director, Exhibitions and Programs at the California African American Museum and independent LA-based curator and former Associate Curator at the Pérez Art Museum Miami, Diana Nawi. Keith and Nawi were recently named joint curators of Prospect.5, the next edition of the renown New Orleans Triennial, which has featured Bahamian contemporary artists, Tavaras Strachan and Lavar Munroe. Exciting exhibitions are on their way Graphic design by Cydne Coleby Double Dutch 7 "Hot Water" Opens This year's "Double Dutch" moves into its seventh iteration with "Hot Water." Opening on Thursday, August 23rd at 7 p.m., the environmental and sustainably-focused project sets its eyes on Ragged Island and provides a moment of encounter for two collectives. Expo 2020 from the University of The Bahamas (UB), and the international collective Plastico Fantastico a group with partners living and working in the The Bahamas, Brazil, Cuba, Portugal, U.S. and the U.K. look at Ragged Island as a site for new futures.  Artists focus on the environment and Ragged Island→ Graphic design by Ivanna Gaitor Celebrating our Son of the Soil The NAGB encourages you to save the date for the upcoming 10-Year Survey of works by Lavar Munroe. On Thursday, September 13th, from 7 p.m. - 10 p.m., the NAGB will exhibit over 40 works, by the artist, created from 2008- 2018, focusing on the evolution of Munroe's creative practice and it's materiality, moving from two dimensions off the wall and into a richer dimensionality. Within his work, Munroe, at once, explores the fragility and tenuous relations of the human condition, the grotesque, the vulnerable and the beautiful. Mark your calendars! The NAGB is excited to announce that our Potcake Exhibition will support the works of 20 students, novice artists and professional creatives in an eclectic display of our favourite Bahamian breed. Sinking: Field Notes on Loss and Belonging Our summer intern, Ethan Knowles, shares a poignant and imaginative piece of writing in preparation for our annual "Double Dutch" series. The seventh iteration, "Hot Water", which opens this Thursday, August 23rd at 7 p.m., is a collaborative meeting between two collectives: Expo 2020 from University of The Bahamas and the international collective Plastico Fantastico. In Knowles' writing, he looks at Ragged Island's destruction after Hurricane Irma through the eye of a young child and starts to map out a way for us to begin to deal with the trauma of loss, devastation and the reclamation of cultural identity and memory.  Read the final chapter here. Remedies for Remembering: Darchell Henderson’s mural on Hospital Lane In her new public artwork for Hospital Lane - historically significant but also struggling from a particular kind of contemporary notoriety - Darchell Henderson gives us a brief look into some of the anthropology of this particular archipelago. The painted mural, entitled “Legacy” (2018), by a mere show of three faces gives excellent insight into some of the lineages of the majority population of this space: an imagined Arawak, modelled off of their First Nations cousins, a regal African tribesman, and a modern-day Black Bahamian. All of this has impacted how the majority of Bahamians look, live and feel as we all deal with the weight of history in our landscape. See your legacy!
