Despite all the noise in the marketplace about BPL and the make-up scandal.... There are many who are deeply concerned about Eluethera right now and they are asking for all Bahamians to help them!
In late 2013 concerned Bahamians started a petition to protect one of Eleuthera's and maybe our country's most beautiful monuments Eleuthera's Lighthouse Point, Bannerman Town and the surrounding areas. This God made creation of outstanding beauty was marketed as a potential site for gated development, and it upset many who wanted to keep it for Bahamians, visitors and for the next generations. We understand that Disney Cruise Line has selected this Bahamian landmark for a park or second cruise 'destination' island, which was likely sold to them for only $20 million.
The cape is on the southern end of the 110-mile-long island of Eleuthera, famous for its pink sand beaches. Just off the northern shore of Eleuthera is Egg Island, where Disney had expressed interest in a second private port years ago, but after careful environmental studies announced in 2016 that they had decided the island was not suitable for large-scale development.
Locals on Eleuthera have begun a campaign to block the development on Lighthouse Point, citing concerns over how the development could impact the local ecology and the rich history of the island. In an exclusive statement with Tribune 242, a Disney Cruise Line spokesperson ensured Bahamians that would be involved with any future the cruise line would have in the nation, noting the cruise line's commitment to "sustainability, protecting the environment, creating jobs and economic opportunity, and celebrating the culture and stories of the area."
According to residents of Eleuthera, the diversity of the Eco system and the hugely important cultural and historic resources are irreplaceable and should be preserved for the enjoyment and education of the entire community and not just for a select few. Archaeological and scientific findings to this point have been significant. It is reported to be one of the most important unexplored archaeological and scientific sites in The Bahamas.
Even though the Government of The Bahamas has signed onto the Caribbean Challenge and has agreed to place certain percentages of land and sea into protected custody, it has not designated conservation areas on Eleuthera.
But, the protest persists, and now many concerned Eleutherans, Non-profits and many persons who love The Bahamas are saying NO and asking you to sign this very important petition and help us make Lighthouse Point the first protected place on Eleuthera.

We are in support of this, and encourage you to sign, share and post. 2017 and 2018 have proved that 'the people' can bring change. That we can demand our Government listen to us and save some of our amazing lands and seas for our people and not another Cruise Line, taking business away from the islands open to them - and keeping it all to themselves.
We encourage you to read more, learn more and demand that Disney moves on to another place and leave these 700 acres of paradise alone for all to enjoy - not just fans of Mickey Mouse.
