Long before Fido and Bella became the dogs we love and spoil, they were the animals used by our forefathers to help hunt and gather. The use of animals as beasts of burden for centuries was a reality that we all sort of understood. We may not have liked it, but in some ways, we turned a blind eye and accepted it knowing the practice allowed our ancestors to survive in harsh climates and hard conditions and if it hadn’t been for their survival, well, the obvious…we wouldn’t be here today to fuss about how animals are being used now.

PM Minnis opens General Post Office in Town Centre Mall |
It was a celebratory mood as Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Dr. Hubert Minnis officially opened the General Post Office in its new location, Town Centre Mall in the heart of the island of New Providence.
Staff members read poetry and sang songs, complemented with entertainment by the Royal Bahamas Police Force Pop Band – all in celebration of relocating to the new premises. Also present were Cabinet Ministers, Senators, senior public officials and other invited guests. |
BPL saga continues to cost Taxpayers |
Following the unceremonious termination of the previous Board of Bahamas Power and Light (BPL) amid allegations of political interference and unethical behavior, the Democratic National Alliance (DNA) called for a swift and independent investigation into these matters in August 2018. Nine months later, it remains unclear if and when the probe promised by the Prime Minister will be completed and a report issued to the Bahamian people.
The DNA notes the recent confirmation by the Attorney General (AG) that the government has retained a local firm of private lawyers to defend the $1.1 million lawsuit against the Minister of Public Works filed by former directors of BPL. This follows the signing of a contract with an international firm to probe the serious allegations against the Minister responsible for BPL.

Urban Renewal Utilizes Assets to Help Effect Community Change |
Officials from the Urban Renewal Commission, Ministry of Social Services and Urban Development, recently distributed care packages to 900 families residing in the urban communities of New Providence where Centres are located. They included Bain and Grants Town, Centreville, Englerston, Fort Charlotte, Fox Hill, Free Town, Nassau Village, Pinewood and St. Barnabas. Care packages were also delivered to a number of Senior Citizen facilities.
Minister of Social Services and Urban Development, the Hon. Frankie A. Campbell said there are times when families in the urban communities may need assistance for a short period of time outside of the scope of the Department of Social Services. |
| The Government Proposes a Number of Tax Relief Measures to Provide Reprieve to Citizens |
The Government has proposed a number of tax relief measures to provide some reprieve to all citizens and to encourage economic activity by making the import of certain items relatively cheaper, thereby comparatively easier for persons to enter existing markets and, in some cases, create new ones.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance the Hon. K. Peter Turnquest listed the tax relief measures during the Budget Communication 2019/20, in the House of Assembly, Wednesday, May 29, 2019.
DPM Turnquest explained that there will duty reductions worth $28 million in revenue. “In an effort to rebalance the tax burden between the provision of goods and services and reduce the attendant distortionary impacts, we are beginning to make good on our commitment to reduce duty and excise rates over the next three years.

Titan Mutual Funds Interest ‘Exceeds Expectation’ |
Days before the first investment funds with Island Luck shares in their portfolio become available for subscription, executives said today that initial interest has “exceeded all expectations.” Ansel Watson, President & CEO of Investar Securities Ltd., which is launching the Titan Balanced Fund and the Titan Fixed Income Fund June 3 reported that more than 500 inquiries had filled their e-mail inboxes and poured into its social media pages in the first 48 hours.
“We announced the launch of the funds at OWN Talks on Thursday evening of last week (May 23) after 10 pm at the end of a very lengthy program,” said Watson. “With the coverage in the newspapers, on radio and TV, word got out quickly. |
On May 22, 2019, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) issued a recall for over 62K lbs. of raw beef due to potential E. coli 0157-H7 contamination after random sampling. The meat was packaged at the Aurora Packing Company, Inc. in North Aurora, Illinois and has the establishment number, "EST. 788", inside the USDA mark of inspection.
The recall includes over 40 products, mostly steak (ribeyes, ribs and brisket cuts). |

Bahamian Musicians Had International Audience Out of Their Seats Bahamian musicians had the international audience out of their seats for their entire performance, on May 23, 2019, during the opening set at the Sixth Annual Latin American Arts Season and the First Latin American and Caribbean Culture and Arts Carnival (LACC).
The event held in the World Rose Theme Park, in Beijing, the People's Republic of China, took place after the Opening Ceremony, and was part of a cultural exchange. Among those present was Bahamas Ambassador to the People's Republic of China His Excellency Sterling R.L. Quant.
Julien "Believe" Thompson, Freddie Munnings, Jr., and Angel Reckley produced a high-octane set with Brick City Band members Julian Darville, Jackson Jeffer, Treco Johnson and Chineko Andrews.

IC Winterbotham Junior Series tennis tournament This past weekend, BahaMar was host to a thrilling junior tennis tournament. The IC Winterbotham Junior Series is an ongoing event created and run by Neil Mactaggart, Mickey Williams, Kit Spencer and Ivan Hooper (of Winterbotham Bank and Trust). The IC is made up of people who are passionate about tennis and want to see it grow as both a sport and as a community. One of the IC’s goals is to create a fun, inclusive and competitive environment in which to develop young tennis players. Throughout the event, there was a constant buzz of excitement from the competitors, as they each played 5 or 6 matches over the two and a half days of the tournament.
