Dear Readers,

School is out and Summer 2019 is officially in full swing. For young people, summer brings with it a sense of freedom: No need to wake up early, no uniforms and NO HOMEWORK! But for parents, summer break can be a huge adjustment. From figuring out what to feed your children, to finding a safe and fun environment for them to be in while you're at work; summer can be stressful.

As usual, this year scores of youth-based organizations, churches, sports organizations, and nonprofits are all doing their part to make summer a little easier on parents looking to keep their kids active and engaged. We know it can be a little overwhelming to sift through all the potential camp options so our editorial team thought we'd put together a parental survival guide with some popular safe options for you!

C.A. Smith Bahamas new Governor General

Cornelius A. Smith was sworn in as the 11th governor general of The Bahamas in a ceremony in Parliament Square today.

He succeeds Dame Marguerite Pindling, who demitted office earlier today after serving for just under five years.

In his inaugural speech, Smith pledged to discharge his constitutional duties with impartiality.

“I dedicate myself to helping to promote and renew a greater national commitment to community service and volunteerism,” Smith said.

PM says Government Will Ensure Bahamians Access Crown Land

Prime Minister the Most Hon. Dr. Hubert Minnis announced that his government has embarked on an ambitious effort to ensure Bahamians have greater access to Crown Land.

Contributing to the 2019/20 Budget Debate in the House of Assembly on Wednesday, June 19, he also stated that his government would promote access to Crown Land for development of preschools, especially on the Family Islands.

Where there is no vision, the people sweat!

The rash of power outages spreading across The Bahamas is highly unacceptable. The excuses that have been proffered are nothing more than a continuation of excuses that have marked the incompetence that has been going on at BPL/BEC for decades. The question is, will anyone be held accountable for this fiasco? Will anyone be held accountable to The Bahamian people?

This perennial debacle is a reflection of inept government policies and decisions that are made based on political expediency and relationships with special interests who benefit from these government policies. The Bahamian people are sick and tired and have had enough of the suffering that has been inflicted upon them by successive PLP and FNM administrations. Every year, millions of dollars are paid by the Bahamian people in the form of taxes and fees for inconsistent essential services. Special interests have continued to get wealthier off the backs of poor and working-class Bahamians who could ill afford these outrageously high electricity costs, much less the standby generators that the wealthy use to avoid the inconveniences at BPL.

Regatta Time Again on Grand Bahama Island

It’s Regatta Time again! All across the country, Bahamians are gathering to celebrate our annual down-home traditions, with sloop sailing, Bahamian music, crafts, food, and more.

This year, the 24th Grand Bahama Regatta & Homecoming is slated to take place in the historic Smith’s Point community over a six-day period, starting July 14 and ending July 20. During that time, Grand Bahamians will have access to a series of events, including a church service to take place at the St. Cleveland Baptist Church in Freetown on Sunday, July 14 and a major opening ceremony and performance planned for Friday, July 19.

On Minister Of Works Latest Excuse For Power Failure

If the matter of the power blackouts in New Providence by the Bahamas Power and Light Company were not so serious, you would laugh at the sheer incompetence of this FNM government.

The latest bit of comedy was from the Minister responsible for BPL. While the Bahamian people were sweating away in the heat from BPL's load shedding, the Minister's best defence was that it was worse under the PLP. This is so tiresome now. The fact that people have no power today has nothing to do with the PLP.

Campbell toasts ‘mentor and friend’ during farewell reception for PS Sherrylee Smith

Minister of Social Services and Urban Development, the Hon. Frankie A. Campbell toasted retiring Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Social Services and Urban Development, Ms. Sherrylee Smith, as a “mentor and friend.”

Senior government officials from across the Bahamas Public Service joined counterparts and colleagues from the Ministry of Social Services and Urban Development in paying “the proper tribute” to Permanent Secretary Smith (Friday, June 21) during a Retirement Luncheon held in Ms. Smith’s honour in the Public Hearing Room, Aventura Plaza.

BACK ON NEXT WEEK

Sir Jack Hayward was known for his love of Football, or Soccer. Before his passing he was so proud of the work the Freeport Rugby and Football Club (FRFC) was doing to promote and improve his beloved sport in Grand Bahama, often coming out on the first day, kicking the ball around, and posing for photos. Now going 16 years strong, the FRFC Soccer Camp will once again be held on Monday July 1st to Friday July 5th.

“This camp is truly the best deal on the island for the summer,” said Rob Speller, FRFC President. “Attendance is being pegged at 100 this year, and those parents who want their children to take part need to act quickly to ensure all the places are not already filled.”

Sands Wants to Save our Bahama Land

Glass bottles are recyclable. Typically bottles are made with between 20 and 30 percent recycled material. This is good news for our emerging green country, but glass is heavy and can be hard to transport. Despite this fact, the Bahamian Brewery and Beverage team will launch recycling of their beer bottles in the Abacos on July 16th, 2019.

“We have been recycling bottles in Freeport for the past 11 years and in Nassau for the past 9 years,” said Gary Sands, the General Manager for Bahamian Brewery and Beverage. “Last year was a major accomplishment to the recycling program as we collected just over 50% of the bottles we sold to the market. With the launch of Abaco we hope to reach 60-65% this year.”
