Summer Madness is here at the NAGB, and we welcome the heat and the fire of an uber creative summer, starting with our two artists' talks with John Paul Saddleton and Tessa Whitehead on July 6th and 11th respectively. Our film series is back at the end of the month with the epic "City of God", and if you have not signed up for our fun-filled Mixed Media Summer Art Camp, you still have the opportunity to enrol for session 2.

Open Studios with John Paul Saddleton

The National Art Gallery of The Bahamas invites you to an Open Studios session with John Paul Saddleton on Saturday, July 6th starting at 5:00 p.m. The informal conversation will look at the collection of work supported by John Paul's current Project Space show at the NAGB titled "Transition." As a reminder, the Open Studios session and all programming in support of exhibitions are FREE and open to the public.

Tessa Whitehead Artist Talk

The National Art Gallery of The Bahamas invites you to an artist talk with Tessa Whitehead on Thursday, July 11th starting at 7:00 p.m. The talk will look at how her body of work supported in "...there are always two deaths" was created and her views around process, loss and the reinforcement of contemporary womanhood.

Letitia Pratt–travel grantee for the Tilting Axis Travel Award given the NAGB–attended the annual visual arts conference, the only of its kind in the world to centre the Caribbean, and reports on the meeting which took place at the Memorial ACTé in Pointe-a-Pitre, Guadeloupe at the end of the May. Under the theme "Decolonisation and Art Criticism" Pratt engaged with nuances emerging out of readings on Édouard Glissant's "The Poetics of Relation" which lead to a deeper understanding of the region's cultural realities and challenges as creative thinkers, makers, writers and doers.

Mixed Media Summer Art Camp Session 2

This summer’s theme, “Parading through the Caribbean”, allows campers to explore indigenous festivals throughout the region. Festival experiences include Kadooment from Barbados, Ole Mas from Trinidad & Tobago, Rara from Haiti and Diwali from Guyana. Campers will experiment with a variety of art materials, delving into the stories and histories that are at the foundation of cultural customs and investigating the beliefs and traditions that connect to The Bahamas to countries in the region. NAGB Film Series presents "City of God"

The NAGB welcomes you to a special screening of the critically acclaimed 2002 Brazilian crime epic "City of God," on Thursday, July 25th starting at 8:00 p.m. In the poverty-stricken favelas of Rio de Janeiro in the 1970s, two young men choose different paths. Rocket, a budding photographer documents the increasing drug-related violence of his neighbourhood and drug dealer "Zé" who uses Rocket and his photos as a way to increase his fame as a turf war erupts with his rival, "Knockout Ned."

The NAGB is excited to bring this Global South masterpiece to Fiona's Theatre, and as a reminder, this and all screenings are FREE and open to the public. We will have popcorn on hand for sale.

Free Public Lecture with Dr Desiree Cox

This coming Thursday, July 4th the NAGB is happy to hold host to what is sure to be a brilliant talk on Stem Cell and Regenerative Health research with Dr Desiree Cox. If you’re looking to get a summary on this mystical science magic that feels just a little elusive to a lot of us, or just wanna get to the heart of what’s happening now with stem cell treatments and research, or if you have any burning questions, this is the talk to come to. The talk starts at the NAGB at 6:00 p.m. and won’t be held anywhere else. Oh, and it’s FREE!

Women's Wednesdays returns with LGBT Pride Month

Women's Wednesdays IS BACK, and celebrates LGBT pride month! Join us this pride month at the NAGB to discuss the following: What is the purpose of Pride? What should Pride look like in The Bahamas? What do we need to make it happen? How can we be in solidarity with LGBT+ Bahamians? What have the challenges and victories been for pride demonstrations in other Caribbean countries? What barriers face LGBT+ Bahamians today? In what ways can we support and celebrate Pride this month? Join the cohort on Wednesday, July 3rd starting at 6:00 p.m. at the NAGB.

Drawing from the our video vault, we focus on Allan Jones and Rashad Leamount's National Exhibition 9 project "MaSC Off" which focuses on masculine vulnerability and male camaraderie and friendship. This photographic salon sparked healthy debate in our national discourse adding to social awareness around sexuality and gender.
