When Will We Confront The Elephant In The Room

Dear Readers,

As our independence draws near, it is high time we confront the “elephant in the room” - RACE!

The words like; “white man” “foreigner” “ex-pat” or “conchy-joe” and their negative connotations are all too present in our culture. This racism against whites (please note its not reverse racism- there is no such thing) is almost as bad as Bahamian's racism against Haitians. This weeks resignation of Minister and former Deputy Prime Minister Brent Symonette is a prime example. Prime Minister Minnis challenges CARICOM tourism ministers to come up with new plan to grow regional tourism

Prime Minister the Most Hon. Dr. Hubert Minnis urged CARICOM tourism leaders to explore new ways that the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) can more effectively work with member countries to contribute to the growth of tourism in the region.

Prime Minister Minnis is the representative for tourism in CARICOM’s Quasi-Cabinet. The Prime Minister and Allen Chastanet, the Prime Minister of St. Lucia and CARICOM Chairman, met with ministers of tourism and senior officials on Tuesday evening, ahead of Wednesday’s specially convened meeting of the CTO Council of Tourism ministers and commissioners.

Public School Scholars Share Stories of Paths to Success

Rayshon Neymour, a graduate of Anatol Rodgers, attended 10 schools throughout his life and had to overcome what may be considered insurmountable challenges. His parents were unmarried teenagers. His mother did not attend her school’s graduation ceremony because she was pregnant with him.

“Almost every year I had to pack up my Georgie bundle,” he said.

“Although I may have been called ‘drift wood,’ I never felt that way. I had a resolve to do my best to impact every school that I went to positively. I believe that overcoming is an important part of being a public school scholar.”

Two Senior High School students were awarded scholarships at this year’s Junior Achievement (JA) annual Awards Ceremony for their display of leadership skills, entrepreneurial drive, and creativity.

Kareem Robinson, a 2019 graduate of St. Augustine’s College, came in fourth place in JA’s “Most Distinguished Achiever” category, which is the highest honor an “achiever” can receive within the JA Company Programme. Kareem was the President of the JA Company “DRIP” and will attend Acadia University in Nova Scotia Canada, majoring in Biology.

BAHAMAS TO REPRESENT CARIBBEAN ON FAO COUNCIL

The Bahamas has been elected to serve on the Council of the 194-member Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

Representing The Bahamas at the 41st Conference of the FAO were Minister of Agriculture & Marine Resources, Hon. Michael Pintard, Ambassador to the FAO, Her Excellency Verna Grant and National Correspondent for the FAO Delreese Moss-Grant. The Bahamas' expression of interest in serving in this capacity was unanimously supported by the countries from CARICOM. The Bahamas succeeds Trinidad and Tobago who who had previously served in this capacity.

Campbell toasts ‘mentor and friend’ during farewell reception for PS Sherrylee Smith

Minister of Social Services and Urban Development, the Hon. Frankie A. Campbell toasted retiring Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Social Services and Urban Development, Ms. Sherrylee Smith, as a “mentor and friend.”

Senior government officials from across the Bahamas Public Service joined counterparts and colleagues from the Ministry of Social Services and Urban Development in paying “the proper tribute” to Permanent Secretary Smith (Friday, June 21) during a Retirement Luncheon held in Ms. Smith’s honour in the Public Hearing Room, Aventura Plaza.

Price Commission sounds warnings to grocery store owners

Merchants are being warned of price infractions on breadbasket items and price gouging.

Daniel Sumner, Price Commission Chairman, said the Commission is actively pursuing complaints of alleged price infractions on items including butter, cheese, cooking oil, corned beef, evaporated milk, flour, grits, margarine, mayonnaise, rice and tomato paste.

The Chairman spoke recently at a Press Conference at the Department of Labour, Rosetta Street. Members of the Price Commission board were present.

Learning to enjoy and appreciate the water

TWENTY young Biminites gained increased confidence in the water and new insight into its vital importance during the third annual Swim and Eco Camp hosted by Save The Bays, Waterkeeper(r) Bahamas and international group SwimTayka.

The five-day camp offered pool swim, ocean swim, science experiments, field assessments and presentations on the importance of water. Last year, the same partnership offered Biminites free swimming and lifeguard training in an effort to boost water safety skills on the island.

Bahamas Feeding Network Summer Sizzle Steak-out Moves to Montagu, Set for July 13

Overwhelmed by hundreds who turned out for hot-off-the-grill steaks to support the organisation that serves up to 5,000 hot meals a week to ease the pain of hunger, the Bahamas Feeding Network announced this week it will move its summer fund-raiser steak-out to Montagu Park July 13.

“They say you can never have too much of a good thing,” said Bahamas Feeding Network (BFN) Executive Director Philip Smith. “We love a hungry crowd, but we found that when it comes to holding major events like our steak-outs at the little cottage called Moseff House on Fox Hill Road that serves as our kitchen and main distribution center for hot meals is just too small. So we are very pleased to announce that this July’s summer sizzle will be at Montagu from noon to 6 pm on Saturday, July 13.”
