 $300 Million to Clean Up and Protect a barren Cay

Dear Readers,
This week, our editorial team had the distinct pleasure of sitting in on an amazing presentation from Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) as they announced plans for a multi-million dollar eco-investment on Ocean Cay. The cay is located 20 miles south of Bimini and only 65 miles east of Miami, Florida and after months of hard work, the transformed island will culminate with the arrival of the very first guests this November.
Prime Minister reveals e-Cabinet efficiency goals
The government will embark on an e-Cabinet programme aimed at increasing the efficiency in the Public Service, Prime Minister the Most Hon. Dr. Hubert Minnis has announced.

He was addressing the Caribbean Public Services Associations 49th Annual Conference held Sunday, July 21, 2019 at SuperClubs Breezes on Cable Beach.

In welcoming Caribbean delegates to the occasion, the Prime Minister also shared his government’s plans towards a more modern and efficient Public Service.
MINISTER PINTARD REPRESENTS BAHAMAS AT IICA MEETING IN COSTA RICA
Minister of Agriculture & Marine Resources, the Honorable Michael Pintard led the Bahamian delegation to the 2019 IICA Thirty-Ninth Regular Meeting of the Executive Committee of which the Bahamas is a member. The Bahamian delegation included Minister Pintard and Agricultural Officer Joan Telle from the Department of Agriculture.

The meeting was held at the headquarters of IICA in San Jose, Costa Rica on the 16 -17 July, 2019.
Generations of Girl Guides, Patrons turn out for soft launch in $800,000 Fundraiser to Complete Headquarters
Long before the US Women’s Soccer team won its fourth World Cup title amidst cheers of fans round the world, there were young girls across the globe headed for success, many of them thanks to an international organization most often known as the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts.

In The Bahamas where that organization is known as the “Bahamas Girl Guides Association,” its supporters say it is helping thousands of young females to grow up stronger with greater self-awareness, confidence and a sense of responsibility to community.
MSC CRUISES INVESTS OVER USD 300 MILLION IN ECO-INTELLIGENT OCEAN CAY MSC MARINE RESERVE
With just under four months to go until Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve welcomes its first guests, a meeting was held in Nassau, between Bahamian government officials and a delegation of senior MSC Cruises representatives. The Honorable Prime Minister of The Bahamas, Dr. Hubert Alexander Minnis, along with other Cabinet Ministers and government officials, and the Executive Chairman of MSC Cruises, Pierfrancesco Vago, discussed the final stages in the process to ready the island for its first cruise guests in November 2019.

BEST Commission Holds Persistent Organic Pollutants Workshop
The BEST Commission in the Ministry of Environment and Housing and the National Chemicals Coordinating Committee (NCCC) requested participation in a National workshop on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs), held at the British Colonial Hilton July 18, 2019. The Workshop aims to inform specific stakeholders in the public and private sector of the pending changes which will impact the way chemicals and certain products are imported into The Bahamas. The Bahamas is a member country of the Stockholm Convention and under that convention we are required to identify all imports and service providers which import POPs containing products or utilize POPs in the services which they provide.
BAMSI Shines at Central Bank of the Bahamas’ Wellness Fair
The Bahamas Agriculture and Marine Science Institute (BAMSI) was thrilled to be one of the participants in the Central Bank of The Bahamas’ Annual Wellness Fair, held earlier this month, which reeled in excited staff and curious members of the public who were happy to share in the bounty of fresh produce brought by the Institute. 

Along with a host of information - pamphlets and flyers - available on the school and explaining all of its academic programmes, BAMSI brought cases of bananas, papayas, okra, butternut squash, sweet potato, honeydew melon, and pumpkins
GBPA Conchman Triathlon Makes donation to the Freeport Rugby & Football Club
The Freeport Rugby Football Club (FRFC) was delighted and thankful for a recent donation provided by the GBPA Conchman Committee of funding for new uniforms (kits), training equipment, and tents for the new season starting in September. Having just finished another successful Sir Jack Hayward Soccer Camp the much-needed tents will provide shade for the eighty children who attend their annual camp.

Rob Speller, President of the FRFC, said “We are very grateful for the donation by the Conchman Triathlon Committee and are thrilled to have new kits for all our junior programs. We try to make all our programs as affordable as possible and donations like this help; so many who want to be part of a team and a great club.

LCIS Grade 3 Students Donate Wheelchairs to BAPD
At Lyford Cay International School (LCIS) the International Baccalaureate (IB) inquiry-based curriculum allows for students at all ages to undertake in-depth exploration of concepts in a variety of different themes. At the end of the school year, the Grade 3 students embarked on an inquiry about simple machines and how they make lives easier. During this investigation, the students realised that a wheelchair is a machine that continues to make life easier for many, especially children with disabilities. With this knowledge, they took action - they raised money to purchase wheelchairs for the Bahamas Association for the Physically Disabled (BAPD).
