"Timelines: 1950-2007"
"Solomon" (2000), Stan Burnside, oil on canvas, 72 x 72 inches. National Collection

The new rehanging of the Permanent Exhibition opens this Thursday, August 1st, 2019. “Timelines: 1950-2007” is curated by NAGB Assistant Curator, Richardo Barrett, and gives us an overview of the art history of The Bahamas that led to what we know and love as Bahamian art. The Nassuvians, the family islanders, the immigrant artists, men, women, and all who fall between. Prepare to be surprised by some of these pairings, and the pacing of this story of our shared art history. “Timelines: 1950-2007” supports the work of 43 artists and predominantly draws on the National Collection.

Save the Date: VLOSA Opening
The "Visual Life of Social Affliction" (VLOSA) seeks to grapple with the ways in which Caribbean visual practice critically engages long-standing experiences of social suffering. Recognizing the real senses in which the Caribbean not only was born in the structural violence of Native genocide, African slavery, and Indian indenture instituted by colonial powers, but has been sustained since then by the relentless continuation of institutionalized disrespect, disregard, and dishonor, this project seeks to capture the destructive impact of dominating powers on the lives of Caribbean people.

"VLOSA" will open on Thursday, August 22nd, 2019 at 7:00 p.m. The opening is free and all are invited.
More About VLOSA
From the Collection: John Beadle's "Emancipation Day Boat Cruise"
"Emancipation Day Boat Cruise" (2000), John Beadle, acrylic on canvas, 71 x 53. National Collection

In the spirit of Emancipation Day, we are sharing this all-time favourite from the National Collection. John Beadle’s “Emancipation Day Boat Cruise” (1998) was one of the first works purchased for the National Collection, and shown at the Inaugural National Exhibition - the first-ever. Journeys over sea hold a difficult history for us, but Beadle’s bright depiction gives a sense of hopefulness alongside the awareness of our past - a notion to keep as we move forward as a nation and a region celebrating this day.

An Exciting and Supportive Forum for All
The Bahamas is home to vibrant, diverse, and talented artist communities. This month, we will be turning the spotlight on women in the arts. Bahamian women are breaking silences about social, cultural, and political issues through their artwork. On August 7th, 2019, we will bring together a panel of women artists to talk about their work and ask challenging questions.

From the Video Vault
Tessa Whitehead talks us through her practice and the work for her solo show “…there are always two deaths”, but she does so through stories. We get visuals and mental images of magic, spirituality, Jamaica and The Bahamas. In sifting through the spirit of her lineage and heritage, we see the thinking and experiences that lead to such a smart, visceral, and deeply human body of work.
