The old and historical Butler Family home was completely destroyed by fire this morning. The home is located in The Pond area off of East Bay St. and also served as a grocery store and sold ice in it's early days.
The Butlers are a very prominent family in The Bahamas. The patriarch, Sir Milo Butler, was the first Bahamian Governor General of The Bahamas taking that post after the Independence of The Bahamas in 1973. He is commemorated with a bust located in Rawson Square, Bay St., across from the House of Parliament and his portrait is depicted on the Bahamian $20 note. His wife is Lady Caroline Butler.
Their children have all been a part of the growing of The new Bahamas and grandaughter Loretta Butler-Turner is currently the deputy leader of the official opposition party, the Free National Movement (FNM).
