BAHAMIAN visual artists and fine art photographer Monty Knowles sees sculpted art when he looks at the female body. Adding sophisticated designs with paint to the body canvas produces a “complex visual delight”.

Through his Junkanoo Nymph series, Monty encourages people “to see past the sexual element of the female body and appreciate “nature’s most beautiful art creation”.

Junkanoo Nymph Devinya, the latest addition to the Junkanoo Nymph series was painted live at VOGA, a body art show held over the weekend. The Junkanoo installation brought out the spirit of the cultural expression with vibrant colours and elaborate dynamic costume concepts.

1st Annual Turtle Trot - Hope Town, Abaco - Thursday, 22nd November, 2012

Turtle Trot benefits Marine Conservation

On the morning of American Thanksgiving, Friends of the Environment held the first
annual Turtle Trot sponsored by the Hope Town Lodge in Hope Town, Abaco. The event featured a 5 K run/walk from the Lodge to the north end of Elbow Cay and a one mile fun run for children under 12. The majority of students from Hope Town Primary participated in the mile run, along with a number of visitor’s children.

Organizers of the event were overwhelmed with the turnout, quickly running out of t-
shirts! More were ordered and 45 runners completed the 3.1 mile course along with
another 40 walkers! Over 50 children completed the mile fun run with a total of
approximately 135 participants!

Thanks to the professional timing of Wild Side Timing Company out of Nassau,
Bahamas times were available for the runners after the race and have been posted the
the Friends of the Environment website and the Hope Town Lodge’s facebook page.

Awards were presented on the pool deck of the Lodge while runners and guests enjoyed the new breakfast menu and a mimosa smoothie bar. The results were: First Place: Rusty Heise, 21 minutes, Greg Ickes, 21:06 and Pete Gill, 21:20. Lindsey Ickes
was the top female finisher with a time of 23:22. For the children’s mile race the top finisher was Mason Ickes, Robin Jentil of Hope Town School came second and Reef
Dellanos came third. The top three in each race received a gift certificate to the Hope Town Lodge.

The race benefited the marine conservation and education work of local nonprofit
Friends of the Environment. With recent legislation in the Bahamas protecting turtles
from capture, FRIENDS chose the mascot (a turtle dressed as a turkey) to help raise
awareness of their new protected status.

Native Fruit Inspires Jewellery Line

UNDER the slogan “Reaching Into A New You” always in mind, local designer Ria ‘Ri Nu’ Newbold’s authentically hand sculptured jewellery and fashion accessory line is growing stronger year to year.

Inspired by Bahamian fruits including seagrapes, sugar apple, hog plum, scarlet plum and tamarind, Ms Newbold said all pieces are made by her personally. She said it is a process that is very tedious and time consuming.
“There are some pieces that maintain the inspired fruit colour and texture.

However, there are some pieces where the colours are different. But the shape of the inspired fruit remains the same. I have also made some of these same shapes with the colours of the Bahamian flag: gold, aquamarine and black,” said Ms Newbold.

FRIENDS Environmental Film Festival 2013

$

This winter FRIENDS will once again be hosting a traveling film festival with a selection of environmental films from around the world. Featured films include The Island President, End of the Line and Conservation in Abaco.

The Island President is the story of President Mohamed Nasheed of the Maldives, a man confronting a problem greater than any other world leader has ever faced – the literal survival of his country and everyone in it. After bringing democracy to the Maldives after thirty years of despotic rule, Nasheed is now faced with an even greater challenge: as one of the most low-lying countries in the world, a rise of three feet in sea level would submerge the 1200 islands of the Maldives enough to make them uninhabitable. A classic David and Goliath tale, The Island President captures Nasheed’s first year in office, culminating in his trip to the Copenhagen Climate Summit in 2009 where the film provides a rare and unprecedented glimpse of the political horse-trading that goes on between world leaders at such a top-level global assembly.

The End of the Line, the first major feature documentary film revealing the impact of overfishing on our oceans, had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in the World Cinema Documentary Competition. In the film we see first-hand the effects of our global love affair with fish as food. It examines the imminent extinction of Bluefin tuna, brought on by increasing western demand for sushi; the impact on marine life resulting in huge overpopulation of jellyfish; and the profound implications of a future world with no fish that would bring certain mass starvation.

Filmed over two years, The End of the Line follows the investigative reporter Charles Clover as he confronts politicians and celebrity restaurateurs, who exhibit little regard for the damage they are doing to the oceans.

Habitat Conservation in Abaco is a film by Loggerhead Productions and sponsored by The Nature Conservancy and the Waitt Foundation that looks at three different conservation efforts going on in Abaco. Talking to fishermen, residents, scientists and students, the film visits Cross Harbour, East Abaco Creeks and the blue holes of Abaco.

The film festival will be presented in Hope Town at the Hope Town Harbour Lodge, Tuesday January 15th, 6 -8 p.m. Green Turtle Cay at the Green Turtle Club on Tuesday, January 22nd 6 – 8 p.m. and in Treasure Cay at the Treasure Cay Community Center on Wednesday, January 30th 4 – 6 p.m. FRIENDS members are free, otherwise tickets are $10. ALMOST two years ago, jewellery maker Xan-Xi Bethel embarked on a journey to create Khepera’s Sun, a handcrafted line that embodies the “creative energy in each of us”.
It has always been an aspiration of Xan-Xi’s to start her own line of jewellery.

However it was not until studying at the University of the West Indies, when she decided to explore jewellery making as an avenue for creative expression.
Xan-Xi then went to the drawing board and started creating statement pieces that invoke the positive energy within the women who wear them.
