Grenada, the Caribbean Capital of Chocolate

By Alexander Britell

“Cocoa absorbs the flavor of anything around it,” Wendy Anne tells me.

That’s the thing about cocoa, the fruit whose fermented seeds are the basis for chocolate — terroir is paramount.

Whether it’s mango or papaya or nutmeg, everything in a cocoa tree’s environment will end up, in some manifestation, in the bean — and, eventually, in the bar.  Read more >>

A new study says pot smokers may have more sex than non-smokers.

By Brittany Wong

Good news for pot smokers: Smoking weed regularly could actually be beneficial to your sex life.

While previous studies have suggested that frequent marijuana use may impair sexual desire or performance, new research out of Stanford University School of Medicine suggests the opposite may be true.

“Frequent marijuana use doesn’t seem to impair sexual motivation or performance. If anything, it’s associated with increased coital frequency,” said Michael Eisenberg, the study’s senior author and an assistant professor of urology at Stanford.

According to the study, which was published Friday in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, pot users are having about 20 percent more sex than pot abstainers.  Read more >>

What happens when idealism and pragmatism clash. and the future of a nation hangs in the balance?

Henry James, Bahamian Director of Cultural Affairs, gives a sensational address to the United Nations General Assembly on the anniversary of the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade, embarrassing Mallory King, the Bahamian Prime Minister.

King vows to take his revenge, and sets in motion a plot to destroy James. The instrument of that destruction? Delilah Lockhart, a woman appointed to work closely with James as his Deputy Director.

But the plot backfires, as many plots do.

Small Axe is a new play by Nicolette Bethel.

Guilty Conscience: Why I Want to Become a More Responsible Traveller

The photos and videos all tell the story; I love to travel and it awakens something in me that the human mind can’t even fathom. It’s so easy to fall in love with a place you get to call your home for a stretch of days. You get comfortable, familiar and connected.

The Guilt

It’s not until you return home and you see your favorite winery in Napa Valley burned to the ground, or parts of Puerto Rico where you bonded with cigar rollers and roadside vendors is under water destitute, that the burden of being a traveller sets in.  Read more >>

I remember when I was younger, I’d always hear family and friends of family talk about going to or just returning from some conference from somewhere in the world. To me, it always seemed like some stuffy, “old people” event that saw nothing but ill-fitting coat suits, dusty brief cases and long drawn out sessions laced with boredom and yawning.

In fact, I was so turned off by them that I never attended unless I was assigned to one for news coverage.

Well fears aside, this year, I signed up for my first ever conference and Blogalicious 9 DID NOT DISAPPOINT!  Read more >>

The Cat Island Sailing Club Association recently made a $2,500.00 scholarship donation for five Cat Islanders to attend the Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI).

The hope is that this scholarship will aid in producing skilled tradesmen who will return to Cat Island and continue to rebuild the island which is still recovering from the effects of both hurricanes Joaquin and Matthew.

“Cat Island needs infrastructure development. We need Electricians, Carpenters and Plumbers that would better assist in rebuilding the island,” said four-year President of the association, Patrick Strachan.

As he demits his post as President, Mr. Strachan hopes to see the traditions of the club continue. He also believes that scholarships such as this should be a precedent for other companies and Cat Islanders to follow, in the effort to rebuild the island.

In support of his goal, Treasurer of the Association, Andrea Sturrup also hopes more Cat Islanders get involved in the rebuilding project. As a BTVI graduate, Ms. Sturrup said she is 100% behind the education BTVI offers.

“BTVI gave me an excellent career. I attribute my success in the various government departments I served in to BTVI. I am happy to see future scholars get the same kind of education,” said Ms. Sturrup.

The scholarship is available to all Cat Islanders wishing to attend the institution.
