Looking back at it now, I was hella crazy to think I could pull this trip off in such a short time frame. But I did it, so I guess I’m as crazy as they come!

Morocco seems to be the new Instagram craze; it’s famous Blue City, the jaw dropping architecture, the color oozing out of every corner, it’s a travel blogger’s dream! It recently climbed up the ranks on my bucket list after being bombarded by these fantasy-like photos I kept coming across.  Read more >>

BTVI to Holland College: Discovering the Possibilities

Keandra Knowles - From a BTVI Blue Knight to a Holland Hurricane.

“As individuals, we tend to place limitations upon ourselves regarding dreams and ambition, which is a self-imposing threat to our own success. Nothing is impossible once you believe you can. As Nike says, ‘Just do it.’”

These were the encouraging words of Keandra Knowles - a student at the Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI), who recently received the opportunity of a lifetime when she participated in a student exchange program at Holland College, Prince Edward Island.

Born and raised in Freeport, Grand Bahama, Keandra never imagined she would enroll at BTVI and end up in Canada for school. She was chosen as the recipient of an Emerging Leaders in the Americas Program (ELAP) scholarship and became the first student from BTVI’s Grand Bahama campus to be awarded this opportunity.

The scholarship, granted by the Canadian government, provides Latin America and Caribbean students with short-term exchange opportunities at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Keandra, a Construction Technology major, accepted this opportunity with open arms and high spirits. From the moment she found out, she promised herself that she would make the most out of her experience. Reality however did not set in until the moment she stepped off the plane into a world unlike the one she knew. Her adventure had begun.

Holland College was far different from the BTVI Keandra knew. From the campus and the classes to the teaching methods and the extracurricular activities, Keandra knew she was not in ‘Kansas’ anymore. Fortunately, she knew that her year-long journey at BTVI had prepared her for this moment.
“The courses were structured differently because where I would have taken more of a hands on approach regarding the building process at BTVI, I was challenged to look into the engineering design factors as well as the legal and administrative framework of the construction industry at Holland College. Although there were some differences, I was able to adapt fairly well because I was familiar with much of the content as a result of the knowledge I acquired from BTVI combined with that from past experiences,” said Keandra.

Playing the game well and shooting for the stars!

Additionally, while studying at Holland College, Keandra not only focused and thrived academically, but she also ventured out into extracurricular activities by joining the women’s basketball team. Being a part of the team allowed her to explore other provinces such as Québec, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, which she claimed was the most exciting aspect of her experience.

By making the decision to attend BTVI, Keandra set herself up to discover life-changing possibilities. This opportunity has further fueled Keandra’s determination to succeed and makes her want to work harder. It has widened her perception of education.

“This experience has reinforced the idea that education is dynamic, multi-dimensional and not restricted to formal settings such as within academic institutions,” said Keandra.

“I am more enthused to continue learning about the people whom I meet as well as the environment of which I am engaged in and all that it encompasses. As a result, I expect exposure to new ideas, different technologies and methodologies to inspire myself and others to bring about a positive change within our respective environments. The saying goes, "Knowledge is power," yet I believe that knowledge is powerful when applied, and as such it is a key to unlocking growth that can lead to change,” she continued.

Keandra is grateful to BTVI not only for helping provide this opportunity, but for efficiently equipping her with the skills and knowledge that made it easy for her to adjust to her three month semester at Holland College – a school that has now been added to her list of further possibilities.

Meanwhile, Associate Vice President of BTVI's northern campus, Veronica Collie, said the team is pleased to have had its first ELAP student.

"During Keandra's period at BTVI Freeport, she promoted positive campus growth. BTVI Freeport is grateful to her for representing us," said Ms. Collie.

"When she was chosen, we were all elated, particularly since she was the first ELAP student from the BTVI Freeport campus.  It was felt that Keandra would continue to excel at Holland College and bring back a wealth of ideas. This, we have already seen," exclaimed Ms. Collie.

Ms. Collie believes Keandra has "set the pace" for other students from the Grand Bahama campus to be afforded the opportunity to study abroad.

Accolades permeated the air as 11 employees of The Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI) were recently showered with tributes, plaques and gifts, in honour of their contributions to the organization.

BTVI’s Chairman, Kevin Basden, told the honourees that the board and management value the respective roles they have played.

“At the end of the day, you have built lives and by extension, the nation.  We know of the importance of the work you have done.  All of your roles have value.  It takes all of us to work together. There is no distinction in terms of your service,” said Mr. Basden.

He noted that the luncheon, held at Luciano’s of Chicago, was simply a token of appreciation for their diligence.

“This cannot repay you for your service. Many times it may have been hard or difficult, but you persevered. Too many times we don’t take the time to say ‘Thank you,’ but to be acknowledged by your peers speaks volumes,” stated Mr. Basden.

The honourees included:

Campus nurse, Voreetis Barr, 10 years;
Construction trades’ instructor, Peter Briggs, 27 years;

On the other hand, the honourees also paid respect to the organization.

Math instructor, Ronald Clarke said, “While at BTVI, every day, I want to go to work,” while Career Officer, Michael Smith revealed: “Ms. Racquel Bethel was one of the best bosses I had. She is a gem.”

Meanwhile, Nurse Voreetis Barr said it has been an honour serving at BTVI and Payroll Officer, Ann Marie Rolle noted that it was important for her to remain accountable and committed during her tenure.
Some of the retirees will continue on until the end of the 2018-2019 academic year.

San Francisco will clear the convictions of thousands of people who were charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana dating back to 1975.

The District Attorney’s office said it will review, recall and re-sentence as many as 4,940 felony marijuana convictions, in addition to dismissing 3,038 misdemeanors.  Read more >>

TO MAKE BIG WAVES IN TEXAS
Bahamasair and Bahamas Tourism conduct major marketing events
in Houston and nearby Austin, TX

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL  - January 29, 2018– A group including marketing and sales executives of Bahamasair recently visited Texas and teamed up with the local staff of The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, Houston.  The collective group   conducted a series of successful marketing events, as a part of continuing efforts to promote the recently launched Bahamasair direct Houston/Nassau service out of Houston's Intercontinental George Bush Airport (IAH).

The marketing trip to Houston is Bahamasair's third such trip to the area within the past four months to promote the service between Houston and Nassau, which began with an official inaugural flight out of Houston, November 16th, 2017.

The events, which were all organized and conducted by the combined team of Bahamasair, Sales and the Bahamas Tourist Office, Houston, were led by Director of Marketing, Bahamasair, Mr. Frederick Donathan, and Area Manager, BTO Houston, Mr. Prescott Young.  The events included an outreach to Travel Agents in Austin, TX; a student symposium at the University of Houston and a Bahamas night in the Houston downtown area.

Bahamasair and Bahamas Ministry of Tourism team registering  University of Houston students to participate in Forum on The Bahamas to promote Bahamasair's new direct Nassau/Houston flights.

The marketing events taking place in Houston, TX and surrounds were firstly aimed at ensuring that the Travel agents are educated about the new service and how to sell it, and secondly providing visibility and exposure to ensure that the Houston public is aware of the service.

The travel agent event in Austin, allowed for agents from that area to be reached, as Austin and San Antonio Texas are great drive markets for persons flying out of Houston's IAH.
The event was in the format of a Mixer and featured a special video presentation on The Bahamas, along with some information on The Bahamas' Travel Agent Specialist Program.  Highlights of the evening included the Special Appearance and Performance of Bahamian recording artist Julien Believe as well as a Bahamian DJ providing Bahamian dance music. The travel agents were also given the surprise announcement of a Familiarization Trip to The Bahamas compliments of Bahamasair and the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, April 26th-29th.

Bahamian global performing artist, Julien Believe, seranades attendee at Travel Agent's event, Austin TX, in support of the airline's new direct Houston/Nassau service.

The University of Houston student event was targeted at College students, to get the word out on The Bahamas for those considering Spring Break travel but also to create brand awareness and recognition of Bahamasair and The Bahamas product.  A pre-registration event took place at the school near its Student Center to encourage students to sign up for the event, but also to enter for special prizes.  A Symposium followed the registration and the marketing team was able to present its message to a near capacity audience.

The University of Houston is a state research university and the flagship institution of the University of Houston System. UH is the third-largest university in Texas with nearly 43,000 students with a strong Bahamian enrollment on campus.  Bahamian students were among those that were able to enjoy the double appearance of Bahamian artists, Julien Believe and Angelique Sabrina.  Additionally the students were given a taste of Bahamian culture in the form of a Bahamian Junkanoo rushout and a lucky student won a Round Trip ticket on Bahamasair .

Bahamasair and Bahamas Ministry of Tourism Houston,  hosts Bahamas Night event to promote the airline's new direct Nassau/Houston flights.

Bahamian entertainment was also on display for a large gathering at the Aloft in Houston's Galleria at the Bahamas Night event.  In addition to the performances of the Bahamian artists, and a Junkanoo rushout, the guests were also treated to the performance of a Fire Dancer.  The only thing vying with the Bahamian smorgasbord of entertainment was the Bahamian food.

Prepared by Houston based Bahamian Chef, Ancillo Solomon, the food included Bahamian Grouper fingers, Bahamian macaroni n cheese, conch fritters and chicken wings.  The drink of the night was Bahamian Goombay Smash.  Those attending the event included top producing travel agents in the area, local influencers, and Bahamian travel industry partners.  The Bahamas Honorary Consul General, Houston, Lynden Rose was in attendance as was the Barbados Honorary Consul General, Mr. Lewis Brown.

I wasn’t surprised that he did it; the “when and where” are what got me!

Going back to Barcelona was always on the agenda. The beautiful and whimsical destination stole both of our hearts during our first visit in 2015. While we fell in love with the city, we were simultaneously falling harder for each other.

Barcelona does that, though.

Its architecture, mood and vibe whisper sweet nothings in your ear and silently seduces you. It’s an authentically romantic location that flings you in the middle of your very own fairy tale.

My fairy tale played out at one of the city’s most iconic landmarks in front of dozens of locals, tourists and romance-seekers who are now characters in a story I’ll read to anyone willing to listen. It’s a tale I wont soon forget.  Read more >>
