By Arthia Nixon for Bahamas Vice-Consul Attaché Atlanta, Georgia

(Atlanta, Georgia) Atlanta experience the sights, sounds and culture of the archipelago when internationally acclaimed Bahamas National Youth Choir, under the direction of Cleophas Adderely, performs at the prestigious Morehouse College this weekend.

According to newly appointed Vice-Consul Attaché with responsibility for Culture and Student Relations, Robert Pinder, the performance is just a small part of the post-Independence Day celebrations planned for the city of Atlanta.

“There are several confirmed dignitaries from The Bahamas who will be joining us and we have arranged courtesy calls with some of Atlanta’s representatives as well,” said Pinder. “Additionally, the Association of Bahamians In Georgia are planning a cook-out with Bahamian dishes and we are taking part in a church service at historic Friendship Baptist Church, a visit with the Governor, plus in between their performances, there will be several opportunities for them to tour the city and all it has to offer. This is a pre-cursor to another major milestone for The Bahamas which we will be revealing in short order.”

As if it were just yesterday, I can well recall witnessing the Union Jack being lowered on Fort Charlotte in Nassau for the very last time 40 years ago this Wednesday to mark the birth of a new nation, the Commonwealth of The Bahamas, and a Bahamian flag hoisted for the very first time.

At that moment, Bahamians by the thousands shouted approval and sang the nation’s new national anthem March on Bahamaland with a sense of awe-inspiring pride unthinkable as former “British subjects.”

That was 40 years ago when The Bahamas (established as a British Crown Colony in 1718) became a sovereign nation on July 10, 1973. This week, Bahamians are celebrating the 40th anniversary of independence with similar enthusiasm and hope for a better tomorrow as they did four decades ago.

None of this would have been possible had it not been for the leadership and determination of Lynden Oscar Pindling, architect of majority rule in 1967 and the father of Bahamian independence in 1973

Bahamas 40th Independence Anniv Ecumenical Service

MIAMI, FL – July 17, 2013 - A capacity crowd of Bahamians, Bahamian descendants, and friends of The Bahamas, gathered at the Historic St. Agnes Church, Miami Florida on Sunday to take part in an Ecumenical Service celebrating the Bahamas 40th Anniversary of Independence.

A cross section of Bahamian spiritual leaders from the South Florida area took part in the service.  Highlights included the introduction of the new Bahamas Consul General of The Bahamas to Florida, Mr. H. Ricardo Treco;  Remarks from the Government of The Bahamas brought by Bahamas Minister of Financial Services, Mr. Ryan Pinder and an inspiring (sometimes funny), Independence Message from the Rector of St. Agnes, Father Denrick Rolle.

Saint Agnes Episcopal Church is one of Miami’s oldest and largest churches and had its origin in October 1897.  The founders chose the name of Saint Agnes for the new Church because the majority of them had been members of the popular and vigorous Saint Agnes in Nassau, Bahamas.

Sunday’s Ecumenical service began with the presentation of flags by representatives of The Royal Bahamas Police Force and Bahamas Customs Department, and was conducted by Reverend Jerome Symonette of Restoring Grace Community Church.

The organizers of the Ecumenical Service, The Bahamas Consulate General, once again made the annual presentations of thanks to honorees identified as persons who have made a significant contribution to the Bahamian community of South Florida.  This year’s honorees included, Rosamon Gomez, who has held the position of President of the National Association of The Bahamas (NAB) for some 13 years and Spiritual leader  of the Freewill Christian Center, Pastor David Ellis.  Presentations were also made to Ms. Kay Winchell, Stephanie  Teele and Miss Helen Gage.

The Ecumenical Service on Sunday was one of the events planned as a part of the month long series of activities to mark the 40th Anniversary of Independence by the Bahamian community in South Florida.  The series of events were planned and organized by a committee under the leadership of Deputy Consul General, Florida, Ms. Sandra Carey and comprised of a selection of staff members of the Consulate and Bahamas Tourist Office, Florida along with local Bahamians representing the leadership of businesses, churches and Bahamian Organizations in South Florida.

The Independence celebrations in South Florida kicked-off last Friday with a Tree Planting and Flag Raising Ceremony in Perrine Florida.  Other events set to take place include an Independence picnic,  on Saturday July 20th; a Junkanoo Rushout, July 25th; a Gospel Concert, July 26th and the NAB Annual Fundraising scholarship Gala, July 27th  - to be emceed by Mr. David Wallace.

Event details and ticketing information is available by calling Russell Carroll at (954) 673-0980, or Dr.  J'Ramando Horton, at The Bahamas Consulate General at 305-373-6295.

Susan G. Komen Partners with One Eleuthera for Breast Cancer Awareness

Deveaux-Gordon (Director of IT/Communications, One Eleuthera), Maisie Pinder (Community
Outreach Coordinator, One Eleuthera) and Allanah Kittle (Emory University student).

Eleuthera, Bahamas – July 29, 2013 -- The One Eleuthera Foundation (OEF) recently expanded its work in strengthening Eleuthera’s communities by joining forces with Susan G. Komen®, the world’s largest breast cancer organization, to increase breast cancer awareness efforts on the island.

As part of this new partnership, OEF has created a new role of a community outreach coordinator and designed a vigorous breast cancer awareness program for the island. Its main goal is to distribute information to the public about various cancers, dispel cancer myths and describe the services offered by the OEF and its partners. Other targeted areas include increased knowledge of breast cancer and other life threatening diseases, the promotion of early detection, provisions to aid in the treatment of and recovery from such ailments, support for cancer patients and their families and the collection of accurate statistical data in relation to cancer and breast cancer in particular. These are just a few of the items on the agenda. “Susan G. Komen is proud to collaborate with government officials, medical professionals, corporate partners, scientists, survivors, and advocates in The Bahamas who are taking bold strides toward ending breast cancer forever,” said Nancy G. Brinker, Founder and Chair of Global Strategy. “We are honoured to be able to support the efforts of all of our partners in The Bahamas, especially the One Eleuthera Foundation who is working to increase awareness and ultimately improve care and treatment outcomes.”

As a part of OEF’s Health and Wellness initiative, OEF has created a role of a fulltime Community Outreach Coordinator (COC) in the person of Maisie Pinder to push forward the goals of educating the public of their breast cancer risk. This great partnership has already yielded good fruit. This past June, every community on Eleuthera was visited by community educators and given much needed breast cancer health information. Hence, for Eleuthera, the journey to the cure has begun.

Over the years, cancer has been a leading cause of death in The Bahamas. The island of Eleuthera is no exception. Research conducted by Dr. Judith Hurley, Medical Director of the Hematology/Oncology Clinics and the Medical Oncology Consultant for the Taylor Breast Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida., indicates that according to one study, 23 percent of Bahamian women diagnosed with breast cancer carry the BRCA1 gene mutation, the highest known population in the world to carry this mutation. Statistics reveal that 43 percent of Bahamian women diagnosed with breast cancer die before the age of 50 while the averageage of death in women in the U.S. is 68. These statistics are alarmingly high and it is the goal of OEF to reverse this trend and make a lasting impact on cancer on Eleuthera.

The campaign began this past June with an island-wide survey, inclusive of Spanish Wells and Harbour Island. This activity was headed by a multidisciplinary team from Emory University’s Global Health Institute, assisted by the COC, Maisie Pinder.

“In my capacity as Community Outreach Coordinator for The One Eleuthera Foundation, I see the dawning of a new day on the island of Eleuthera,” Maisie said “Already we are on the ground and evangelizing real contact with our women about breast cancer.”

The report from the surveys conducted last month used mixed methods to assess community needs and perceptions of One Eleuthera and its partnerships, as well as evaluated the partnership’s goals and resources. Each method is scaled in a way that takes into account the short duration of in-country research time, ensuring that the project creates the most robust description of the partnership within the confines of the project timeline. Further, the report will provide recommendations as to the appropriate information that should be disseminated at outreach activities conducted during the project which will include community meetings, seminars, forums, one-on-one counselling, and presentations at schools, and church groups civic groups and other organizations.

Enthused about her new position, Maisie feels that she is helping to make a huge difference in the lives of so many women on Eleuthera by simply reaching out to them with valuable information they need and empowering them to take charge of their own well- being. “We have already dispelled a myth that so many of them believed: I just wish I could share the look on their faces when they learned that mammograms do not hurt and then they agreed to have their breasts screened. It’s just priceless!,” Maisie described. “It is such a good feeling when they actually ‘get it’. Without a doubt, this is going to be an impactful and exciting journey and I intend to give it my all.”
