The Ocean Club, a Four Seasons Resort, Paradise Island

Great luxury is its own form of travel. It’s a journey away from the ordinary, from the adequate. It’s a journey to the indulgent, to the beautiful, to the extraordinary.

The best luxury resorts take you on that journey, working with their surroundings to bring you to a different plane of experience.

Naturally, it begins with service. It’s the quality of service that takes great hotels and turns them into truly great luxury resorts. And then, of course, design, and amenities. The range of offerings.

But there’s a final question, one of authenticity.

Does this hotel belong in its destination? Is it at home in its surroundings? Does it work in tandem with its destination, or could it be placed anywhere in the world?

A great luxury hotel in the Caribbean has to have a sense of place; it has to be a part of the Caribbean.

And it has to be unforgettable.

These are the top luxury resorts in the Caribbean, 2018 edition.  Read more >>

Charles Goldstuck Opens State-of-the-Art Bahamas Recording Facility

By Frank DiGiacomo

“There are probably more talented musicians per capita in the Bahamas than anywhere else,” says Goldstuck. “This was an opportunity to build a world-class facility that can serve as a catalyst for local talent development."

In 2013, the notion of building a state-of-the-art recording studio in the Bahamas -- on prime waterfront real estate, no less -- would have sounded quixotic to anyone aware of the recorded-music industry’s steadily diminishing returns over the previous nine years. But, for Charles Goldstuck, then the executive chairman of TouchTunes Interactive Network, and more recently, founder and co-chairman of Hitco Entertainment, change was in the air. “Outside of the majors, I was seeing a much broader commitment to investing in music,” he tells Billboard. “I felt that the industry pendulum was swinging back.”

So the part-time resident of Albany, a $2 billion, 600-acre development that locals like to call “the Monte Carlo of the Caribbean,” struck a deal with the resort’s principal partners -- including Tavistock Group founder and billionaire Joe Lewis, Justin Timberlake, pro golfers Tiger Woods and Ernie Els, and managing partner Christopher Anand -- to make the studio a reality.  Read more >>

Unique stop & stay cruise to The Bahamas out of Palm Beach is now daily
Bahamas Paradise doubles its cruise business to Grand Bahama with christening of new ship MV Classica

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL  - April 13th, 2018– With the recent ribbon cutting and inaugural ceremony and voyage of its new ship MV Grand Classica, The Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line's unique two day cruise and stay, out of Palm Beach, Florida to Grand Bahama Island is now daily.

Fondly referred to by the cruise line's President, Kevin Sheehan, Jr., as  "our Italian beauty," the new ship now provides the opportunity for the cruise line to potentially deliver as many as 500,000 passengers to Grand Bahama Island annually, from the Port of Palm Beach, Florida.

The Grand Classica and its sister ship, The Grand Celebration, will continue making  two night cruises to The Bahamas with the option for stay over at one of Grand Bahamas' resorts, doubling the business of the cruise line.

The ship, which has the capacity for 1,680 passengers, features a crew of some 600 persons hailing from almost 60 countries.  The totally refurbished 27-year old vessel is captained by Meinhardt Hansen, of Faroe Islands, Iceland, who shared at the inaugural ceremony that he began sailing in his early teens, as his Island is known for being an Island of seafarers.

The new ship boasts 10 decks, a large casino, spa, pools, eight dining options, live entertainment, shopping and a variety of lounges.    The ship's 658 staterooms include spacious interior cabins, ocean views and some suites.

Ribbon Cutting at the Inaugural Ceremony of Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line's MV Grand Classica - l-r CO-MC Janetzy, Discover the Palm Beaches; Jorge Pesquera, CEO, Discover the Palm Beaches; Manuel Almira, Director of the Port of Palm Beach; Chair of the Board of Commissioners, Dr. Jean Landfair Enright; President, Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line, Kevin Sheehan; Captain Meinhardt Jakup Hansen; CEO, Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line, Oneil Khosa;  Mayor of Palm Beach County, Melissa McKinlay; Bahamas Minister of State for Grand Bahama the Honourable Kwasi Thompson and CO-MC TA Walker.

The inaugural ceremonies and ribbon cutting in the ship's 'Legends Theater', was a well-attended affair.  Attendees included business and political leaders from the Palm Beach area, travel agents, media and loyal guests of the cruise line (one couple shared that over the past 7-8 years, they have cruised with Bahamas Paradise up to 175 times).

Palm Beach County Mayor, Melissa Mckinlay, in brief remarks before the ribbon cutting, said that her community had declared, Friday, April 13th as MV Grand Classica Day and she said that Bahamas Paradise Cruise Lines doubling means a $75m impact to Palm Beach County.

Providing comments on the cruise line’s impact on its Bahama Island homeport, The Islands Of The Bahamas Minister of State for Grand Bahama, the Honorable Kwasi Thompson, said that the cruise line is a great partner with both Grand Bahama and the entire Bahamas.   He expressed thanks to the cruise line on behalf of the government and people of The Bahamas and shared that when the Island of Grand Bahama was struck by a major hurricane a few years ago, Bahamas Paradise stuck by the Island. He said that 2018 is a great year for Grand Bahama and that it will also be a great year for Bahamas Paradise.

Bahamas Paradise is the only cruise line that offers cruises with the option of  a resort stay.  To this end, Minister Thompson shared that one of the largest properties on Grand Bahama, The Grand Lucayan Resort - currently closed - should be re-opening within the year.  The Minister said about the resort that within the next few months, the negotiations should be concluded and the refurbishments completed.

Minister Thompson, expressed recognition of the Palm Beach officials at the ceremony and issued a welcome for them to visit the Island of Grand Bahama not only for a vacation but also to do business.  He said that Grand Bahama has been marked by The Bahamas, to become the technology hub of the Caribbean.

"Grand Bahama is the best Island in The Bahamas for all those companies interested in investing in technology, interested in investing in crypto-currency, interested in blockchain technology," the Minister said, adding,  "Grand Bahama Island is the place for you to visit come and get some sand between your toes and the beach experience.  You can come and enjoy a wonderful experience and get some business done at the same time."

President of the cruise line, Mr. Sheehan agreed with Minister Thompson about Grand Bahamas’ being an ideal destination.  He said that because of the beauty of Grand Bahama and the trip there on the Bahamas Paradise, "it can be called the bragging vacation.  You go down, have a great time on the ship, and then spend a few glorious days in Grand Bahama, which offers so much to see and do."

The Stigma of Getting Help!

Dear Readers,

The reality is there is a very negative stigma surrounding mental health in the Bahamas, even now in 2018, when we have access to so much in terms of medical treatment and other avenues to protect our physical well being, many Bahamians still grapple with that stigma. Recently, I had the opportunity to speak to someone who was struggling with her life, it was suggested she seek professional help to help her cope. She was not having it!

For whatever reason, many people are wary of what happens behind the closed doors of a therapist's office. And let's be honest, people have a difficult time admitting that they need professional help because they don't want to be seen by others as "crazy," unfit, or incapable of solving their life problems on their own.

But as the world has changed, so has how we handle those changes. Currently, the world faces economic, social, and psychological crises, and unfortunately women are bearing the brunt of the stress associated with these crises. According to USA's, 'Psychology Today', women are not only reporting more stress than men over money and the economy, they're also experiencing more stress-related symptoms, such as headaches, fatigue, irritability, and depression. In addition, researchers at the Centre for Work-Life Policy recently discovered that although men and women both report feeling stressed at work, women disproportionately feel stress related to their families' well-being because, unlike men, they see a direct link between the time they spend at work and the negative effects on their families (more junk food, more time in front of a TV, less parental supervision). And what does prolonged stress lead to? Nothing good, that's for sure.

Unchecked stress increases the risk for serious illnesses, including heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes. It also can lead to other problems, such as infertility, ulcers, sleep disturbances, chronic fatigue, severe depression, overeating, memory loss, substance abuse, and lowered productivity. These and other stress-related problems represent just some of the very real problems women are facing today.

The article we referenced went on to say, that it would be a mistake to see this as a woman's issue. That men suffer just as much as women do, and it's something everyone needs to address. These facts are not less important here in our islands where we deal with many of these same issues that they do in the USA.

People choose to go to therapy for all kinds of reasons. Some people are looking for more insight, more self-awareness, and tools to improve their overall life satisfaction. People who choose therapy may see the value in working on themselves and are insightful enough to know if, and when they may be in over their heads. Life is full of difficult events, decisions, and transitions. The idea that life is meant to be managed solely on one's own is antiquated and misguided. We all need help.

Seeking HELP, is not a bad thing, it's okay to say you are not perfect or to seek advice. We all do it in our own ways, be it through church, friends, or parents.  Life in this modern world can be hectic; most days, I can't remember if I was texted, WhatsApp'd or messaged sometimes. Keeping up with technology, exercise, job, rent, kids, cleaning...you name it - can be exhausting!
So, our advice, take a deep breath and seek help - it's okay!

Can Marijuana Be The Answer For Pain?

By Kathleen Doheny

April 20, 2018 -- Like many of her friends, Alexandra Callner, now 58, experimented with recreational marijuana when she was younger.

"I had tried it, and hated it, in my 20s," Callner says. "When I was around pot smokers, I thought, 'Ugh, losers.'''

But, that was before her knee arthritis became so bad, it robbed her sleep, night after night. She took two over-the-counter pain pills a day, but the pain would wake her up at night. And the drugs were hard on her stomach.

"It was making me kind of nauseous," she says of the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories. Plus, she needed to stay active to manage her dog boarding service in Pasadena, CA.

Then came another solution. "A neighbor said, 'Try this,'" Callner says. It was a joint.  Read more >>

The HMS Ben Lomond which was used in Operation Ozone.

THE little-known fact the country was once used as a site for biological and chemical warfare testing by both American and British governments has resurfaced with local activists drawing links to the need for a functioning Freedom of Information Act.

Save The Bays legal director Fred Smith, QC, told The Tribune he was shocked to learn of warfare testing in the early 1950s.

British scientists and military personnel - in two secret operations - tested the efficacy of biological weapons on animals 60 miles off the coast of Nassau without the knowledge of local people. The tests ran until 1957 when the British abandoned this type of research and destroyed stockpiles.  Read more >>
