Congrats are in order for Shanina Shaik and Gregory “DJ Ruckus” Andrews! The couple—she's a supermodel, he's an in-demand DJ—married this past Saturday on the island of Eleuthera in the Bahamas. The pair first met in 2015, when Shanina found herself sans entourage during Coachella. "Just before I was going to leave, Greg noticed that I was alone and came over to speak with me," she recalls. "We had the most wonderful conversation." From that moment on, the bride says, she was sure he was "the one." Greg was sure, too, and they dated for just eight months before he proposed.  Read more >>

By Kimberly Miller

The official start of hurricane season is still a month away, but meteorologists are already watching something stirring near the Bahamas.

The National Hurricane Center has not identified the mass of showers and thunderstorms as anything to worry about and models are not pointing to a tropical system.

But hurricane experts with Weather Underground and Accuweather say the atmospheric set up, combined with water that’s about 2 degrees warmer than normal, has piqued their interest.  Read more >>

Celebrating the sport in the Bahamas

While design development in sailing continues to leap forward, what remains unchanged in our sport is the community which surrounds established class organization. These types of boats may not deliver the latest performance experience, but the bigger picture brings together history and comradery.

Said Aristotle, “The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.”

Such is the case with the Bahamian Racing Sloops, once integral to the fishing community and now enjoyed for sailing competition. And the biggest event of them all is the National Family Island Regatta, started in 1954 and today is one of the oldest regattas in The Islands of The Bahamas.  Read more >>

GB Humane Society Operates Admirably

Dear Readers,

As one moves throughout Grand Bahama, in particular, Freeport, the control of pets is evident. To a large extent, this mindset of caring for animals is a culture driven by the Grand Bahama Humane Society. This is how it ought to be.

Functioning very much under the radar, truly, without fanfare, the GB Humane Society is steadily on point, as much or perhaps more so, than any of the sister organizations operating in the rest of The Bahamas.  There has been depreciation clearly notable in other aspects of our society. However, the GB Humane Society's outreach has been simply comprehensive and outstanding.

Like many of the programs that propel that comfortable and meaningful civil existence throughout the world, humane societies got their beginnings in the United Kingdom. The Royal Humane Society was established in 1774 for the expressed collective purpose of ensuring care for sick, injured animals; humane treatment of pets; and a focus on the preservation of wildlife communities.

The GB Humane Society follows the script as flawlessly as is humanly possible. In The Freeport News on Monday, a sub-lead story heralded a particular situation that painted a picture of the hands-on, willingness and readiness features that typify the GB Humane Society.

The story is about a dog being rescued from a dumpster at the Grand Bahama Sports Complex by a citizen of high quality, kindness and one with a distinct humane trait. In the final analysis, after the animal was put in the care of the GB Society, its life changed very much for the better.

It's was Executive Director Tip Burrows' appeal to the general public though that prompted us to spotlight the GB Humane Society for the extraordinary role it has been playing for these many years.

Burrows implored residents to come forward on behalf of pets or stray animals found to be in distress. Burrows said the doors of the GB Society remain open to the public at large, when care is needed to be afforded animals. Very touching was her request of the public to bring animals in dire condition to the society, so that at the very least, they would die in a humane environment, being attended to until the very last.

That attitude is the essence of what is required to be a leader of civil societies
We congratulate the executive director and the other employees such as Felicia Teleforte who is pictured in The Freeport News lovingly holding a dog no longer under stress, once in the care of the GB Society.

Indeed, we encourage Tip Burrows and her associates to keep up the excellent work.

Hail to the Grand Bahama Humane Society!

Illegal Dumper Caught Red Handed

Each month, it's estimated that thousands of pounds of illegal waste are dumped in remote areas across various family islands. On Grand Bahama, beaches, service roads, and other sparsely populated areas have long been the target of illegal dumpers who use them to offload everything from old furniture and appliances to construction debris. The practice of dumping 'in the bush' in addition to being illegal under the law, also has far-reaching implications for the environment, public health and community development. Read More

CROSSREACH APRIL 2018 UPDATE

April was a very smooth series of runs distributing all 51 bags. Once again, loaves of bread for each bag were a lovely addition and also this month we had a donation of 51 containers of salad greens donated by Aquaponics at the Garden of the Groves, a real luxury for everyone.

Hurricane Season: The start of the season on June 1st is rapidly approaching. In anticipation, Crossreach has already stockpiled a large quantity of canned foods and water. Thanks mainly to our friends in Coral Beach. In the event that a devastating hurricane does hit Grand Bahama we should be in a position to distribute emergency supplies immediately after its passing as we have done in years past. However, there is still plenty of shelf space left for more items.
Blessed Hands Ministry: (founded by two of our Crossreach members) is planning to start a soup kitchen, distributing soup, chicken souse, johnny cake, fruit & water in the Lewis Yard/Pinders Point area. Crossreach has provided the fruit and water. Certainly we wish them every success.

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL  - May 4, 2018 – For many years private pilots and private boaters have been enjoying the advantage of the close proximity of Bimini Island to the U.S. coast line, and now with the recently launched direct service of Bahamasair between Miami and Bimini, everyone can now take advantage of this quick jaunt.

Thursday afternoon saw Bahamasair take a smooth lift off, and ascension to cruising altitude however as soon as the plane leveled off it was time to begin the descent of the 15-minute in-air flight.  Visitors who were travelling to the Island of Bimini for the first time expressed shock and amazement at the short flight and the comments throughout the morning were centered on the obvious - that one could get to Bimini in The Bahamas quicker than between downtown Miami and downtown Fort Lauderdale.

The historic new airline service between the U.S. and The Bahamas is a result of collaboration between the airline and the Hilton Resorts world Bimini and was marked by special inaugural ceremonies at Miami International airport and again at the International Airport, Bimini.  The service to Bimini will provide 4 weekly flights on Bahamasair's ATR 42 - 50 seater.  The flights will leave Miami at 1:30, arrive Bimini at 2 pm and then leave Bimini at 2:30 p.m.  Flights in May will be Sundays, Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays.

Acting as The Bahamas Minister of Tourism, The Honorable, Frankie Campbell, Minister of Transport and Local Government, led a number of speakers making remarks at the ribbon cutting at Miami airport.  Lester Sola, Director of Miami Dade Aviation Department welcomed the new service and expressed that it provides a great opportunity for the many travellers who can now fly to Bimini in The Bahamas from the Miami gateway. The crowded, exciting event also featured Bahamas Junkanoo Performers and refreshments including the famed Bahamian delicacies, conch fritters and cracked conch.

At the airport in Bimini, the beautiful voices of the uniformed, fresh faced school children of Bimini, welcomed the inaugural flight, with a medley of Bahamian Calypsos.  Swaying gently in their blue and white uniforms, the delightful group of singers was a highlight of the short ceremony on Island.  The brief event again included a few speakers and concluded with the exchange of gifts.

Pakeisha Edgecombe, the Honorable Member of Parliament for Bimini (and Grand Bahama), expressed pride at the welcome her young constituents provided for the inaugural flight on Thursday.  The MP also praised Resorts World Bimini, "When you have corporate citizens such as Resorts World taking an active role in ensuring that the area in which they invest succeeds, we are indeed grateful for everything you continue to do for this Island and for your confidence in all that Bimini has to offer."

Of the new service, The Member of Parliament said that it has forged the relationship between Florida and Bimini and that it, "is one that we really appreciate we want it to continue to grow and we know that over the years it will."  She said that the partnership is going to be mutually beneficial for both Florida and Bimini.

Other dignitaries at the inaugural ceremonies included, Bahamasair's Chairman, the Honorable, Orville 'Tommy' Turnquest and its Managing Director, Mr. Tracy Cooper; President of Resort's World Bimini, Patricia Lawrence; The Bahamas' Consul General to Florida, Mrs. Linda Mackey The Bahamas Out Island Promotion Board's Executive Director; Mr. Kerry Fountain and The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism's Sr. Director, Aviation, Mr. Tyrone Sawyer.

At a mere 50 miles across from the Florida coastline, Bimini is the closest landfall from the United States of America.   The little Island, known as 'The Gateway to The Bahamas' features exciting adventures such as swimming with Dolphins and exploring the 'Lost City of Atlantis'.  The Island is also known as the Big Game Fishing Capital of the World and hosted many famous Americans including the late Clayton Powell, Ernest Hemingway and Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Why You Need to Visit Treasure Cay in The Bahamas

By Guy Britton and Alexander Britell

It isn’t a resort. It isn’t a beach. It isn’t a residential community.

Treasure Cay is an idea.

It is an idea of the ultimate, authentic Caribbean vacation, a throwback to the Caribbean that’s almost impossible to find anymore.

And it isn’t a resort — it’s a place where you turn a vacation into a week or two of full-fledged island life, of Bahamian living. It’s a place where you experience the salt life, where the day begins with the sand and ends with the sunset, a place where the stereotypes of flip flops and frozen drinks are real — and where they’re spectacular.

It isn’t a beach — this miles-long stretch of unimaginably white sand is one of the best beaches in the world.  Read more >>

Here’s How Much Marijuana Costs in the United States vs Canada

The Priceonomics Data Studio

A tidal wave of change is hitting the cannabis industry in both the United States and Canada.
In the United States, medical marijuana is now legal in 29 states. Not only that, but the recreational use of marijuana is now legal in 10 states. You can walk into a licensed store in places like California, Oregon and Colorado and purchase cannabis nearly as easily as buying beer.

Similar dynamics are taking place in Canada. Medical marijuana consumption was first legalized in 2001, and in 2017 legislation paved the way for the legalization of recreational use throughout all of Canada -- a development that’s expected to be implemented in the summer of this year.

With the emergence of legal weed in the US and Canada, we were curious, in which country is it more expensive? How does the price of marijuana vary across cities in the United States and Canada?  Read more >>
