GB Humane Society Operates Admirably
Dear Readers, As one moves throughout Grand Bahama, in particular, Freeport, the control of pets is evident. To a large extent, this mindset of caring for animals is a culture driven by the Grand Bahama Humane Society. This is how it ought to be.
Functioning very much under the radar, truly, without fanfare, the GB Humane Society is steadily on point, as much or perhaps more so, than any of the sister organizations operating in the rest of The Bahamas. There has been depreciation clearly notable in other aspects of our society. However, the GB Humane Society's outreach has been simply comprehensive and outstanding. Like many of the programs that propel that comfortable and meaningful civil existence throughout the world, humane societies got their beginnings in the United Kingdom. The Royal Humane Society was established in 1774 for the expressed collective purpose of ensuring care for sick, injured animals; humane treatment of pets; and a focus on the preservation of wildlife communities.
The GB Humane Society follows the script as flawlessly as is humanly possible. In The Freeport News on Monday, a sub-lead story heralded a particular situation that painted a picture of the hands-on, willingness and readiness features that typify the GB Humane Society.
The story is about a dog being rescued from a dumpster at the Grand Bahama Sports Complex by a citizen of high quality, kindness and one with a distinct humane trait. In the final analysis, after the animal was put in the care of the GB Society, its life changed very much for the better.
It's was Executive Director Tip Burrows' appeal to the general public though that prompted us to spotlight the GB Humane Society for the extraordinary role it has been playing for these many years. Burrows implored residents to come forward on behalf of pets or stray animals found to be in distress. Burrows said the doors of the GB Society remain open to the public at large, when care is needed to be afforded animals. Very touching was her request of the public to bring animals in dire condition to the society, so that at the very least, they would die in a humane environment, being attended to until the very last.
That attitude is the essence of what is required to be a leader of civil societies We congratulate the executive director and the other employees such as Felicia Teleforte who is pictured in The Freeport News lovingly holding a dog no longer under stress, once in the care of the GB Society.
Indeed, we encourage Tip Burrows and her associates to keep up the excellent work.
Hail to the Grand Bahama Humane Society!

Illegal Dumper Caught Red Handed Each month, it's estimated that thousands of pounds of illegal waste are dumped in remote areas across various family islands. On Grand Bahama, beaches, service roads, and other sparsely populated areas have long been the target of illegal dumpers who use them to offload everything from old furniture and appliances to construction debris. The practice of dumping 'in the bush' in addition to being illegal under the law, also has far-reaching implications for the environment, public health and community development. Read More |

After School Sailing and Sailing Summer Camp As you know, Ross, our current Director of Sailing, will be leaving us soon to pursue a new adventure. Over the past three-years, we have been fortunate that with Ross' spirit and motivational personality, he has trained an amazing group of Junior Sailing Instructors and developed each to recognize their leadership abilities. The Junior Instructors ("JIs") have been instrumental in the success of the sailing program, and should be commended on their commitment to teaching our children many skills, and most importantly, putting smiles on their faces and ensuring they have fun and stay safe. CROSSREACH APRIL 2018 UPDATE
April was a very smooth series of runs distributing all 51 bags. Once again, loaves of bread for each bag were a lovely addition and also this month we had a donation of 51 containers of salad greens donated by Aquaponics at the Garden of the Groves, a real luxury for everyone.
Maylene Hield, East End Run Hurricane Season: The start of the season on June 1st is rapidly approaching. In anticipation, Crossreach has already stockpiled a large quantity of canned foods and water. Thanks mainly to our friends in Coral Beach. In the event that a devastating hurricane does hit Grand Bahama we should be in a position to distribute emergency supplies immediately after its passing as we have done in years past. However, there is still plenty of shelf space left for more items. Blessed Hands Ministry: (founded by two of our Crossreach members) is planning to start a soup kitchen, distributing soup, chicken souse, johnny cake, fruit & water in the Lewis Yard/Pinders Point area. Crossreach has provided the fruit and water. Certainly we wish them every success. THE CROSSREACH TEAM Email: xreach@live.com
