Legalisation, decriminalisation of weed on the table says PM

PM Dr. Hubert Minnis |
The announcement was made at a press conference Saturday, after Dr. Minnis returned home from the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) meetings held in Jamaica.
One of the greater issues discussed at the meetings, he said, was CARICOM’s report on marijuana in the region.
According to the report, some member states, such as The Bahamas, conducted town hall meetings on the matter while others, such as Jamaica, have moved to create marijuana-driven industries in their countries.
It is still unknown what direction The Bahamas will take with regard to marijuana in the country. (via)

New Summer Program Paves Future for Teens
Students get technical!
Photos: Edgar Arnette/Ministry of Education
Parents, students, BTVI executive management, staff and instructors gathered during the recent opening ceremony held at BTVI.
The ICT program is a new program aimed to begin training students leaving the ninth grade in the modules of I.T. Fundamentals, Linux Unhatched, Introduction to Cyber Security, Python, JavaScript, professional performances and ethics. The program - which was oversubscribed - is three years long and will mostly be held during the summer with students having to complete work on weekends and online during regular school terms.
Minister of Education, the Honorable Jeffrey Lloyd urges students not to take this opportunity lightly.
“You are among the first generation that’s going to have a different opportunity... Through training, through mentorship, through education, through opportunities like this, [this program] is going to engender a new culture in The Bahamas. It’s a culture called innovation,” said Minister Lloyd.
Meanwhile, BTVI Chair of Information Technology, Anthony Ramtulla informed the students of the many opportunities available to them through this innovative program.
“After completing the three years, these students will be able to come back to BTVI and finish an Associate’s degree in just about one year. They can then go to the highly accredited New England Tech in the U.S. and complete their Bachelor’s degree in another year. So, if a student is now 14 years old, they will have their Associate’s degree by age 17 and a Bachelor’s degree by age 18. Not to mention the number of industry certificates as well.”
“With this program, the seed will be planted for these young people to become the leading experts in Software Engineering, Network Engineering, and Information Technology Management in the nation,” said Mr. Ramtulla.
Students dive into technology with the help of BTVI instructor, Tiona Tomlinson.
Two young teens in particular are extremely excited about being a part of this summer program.
Alexandria Herard joined this program with her lifetime goal in mind. For her, this is not just another summer program.
“I was looking for something productive to do over the summer and I heard about this program. It seems to have some great benefits, especially the international certifications. I have dreams of opening my own pediatric hospital that will use technology to allow patients with challenges to communicate. This program is a step towards my dreams,” said the 14-year-old D. W. Davis student.
Meanwhile, her friend, 14-year-old K’Shaun Stubbs is adamant about not getting left behind in a technologically advancing world.
“The world is becoming electronic and we as young people have to keep up with the pace... I joined this program to expand my knowledge of information technology so that I will be able to apply it to my future,” said the Mount Carmel student.
Participating in this program will give these young teens a head start in their future careers in the information technology field.
There are 126 students presently enrolled in the program in New Providence. It is also being offered at BTVI’s Grand Bahama campus.
Left to right: BTVI President, Dr. Robert W. Robertson; Minister of Education, the Honorable Jeffrey Lloyd; BTVI Chairman, Kevin Basden and BTVI Chair of Information Technology, Anthony Ramtulla.
“BTVI wishes the members of the first cohort of the ICT program much success as they take this first step towards achieving their future goals” noted Robertson.
BTVI will be receiving the award from CompTIA for being the outstanding academic partner for the Caribbean and Latin America.
Minister Lloyd greets and chats with ICT program participants.

Entrepreneur: Marijuana could be a billion-dollar industry
Hepburn-Marshall thinks The Bahamas could be a poster child for black ownership in the industry
Proper Rx Collective CEO Elliot Hepburn-Marshall contends that because The Bahamas attracts close to six million visitors per year, if medical and recreational marijuana were given the green light the country could bring in close to $1.5 billion.
By Chester Robards
Medical and recreational marijuana could be a billion-dollar industry in The Bahamas, given the country’s multimillion count of visitors per annum, according to Elliot Hepburn-Marshall, president of Bahama Cann and CEO of Oakland, California-based Proper Rx Collective, which delivers medical marijuana to patients. He told Guardian Business on Monday that if marijuana was given the green light today in The Bahamas it would take 1.5 to two years before the industry could be viable.
Hepburn-Marshall, who hails from Grand Bahama but moved to California to pursue his business, was refuting the Report of the CARICOM Regional Commission on Marijuana 2018, which states that The Bahamas could see a financial benefit of about $5 million from the legalization of marijuana and regulation of its sale and use. Hepburn-Marshall said the population of The Bahamas is quite close to that of Oakland, California, where he runs his business. In Oakland, before recreational use of marijuana was allowed by the state, medical marijuana sales were bringing in a little less than $1 billion, according to Hepburn-Marshall. Read more >>

Rastafarians Seek Religious Recognition For Drug Use

RASTAFARIAN communities in The Bahamas are calling for reparatory justice in the form of state recognition and inclusion as national discourse over marijuana law reform picks up steam.
Priests canvassed by The Tribune said they expected the government to follow the track of Jamaica and Antigua, whose leaders have issued formal apologies for the longstanding oppression inflicted on Rastafarian communities due to their sacramental use of the plant.
The government has reportedly held talks with the Bobo Ashanti - formally known as the Ethiopia Africa Black International Congress (EABIC) - for the past three months concerning sacramental rights; however, confidence over the inclusion and equity stake of Rastafarians was not widespread.
An overriding concern among faith leaders was that the community be placed at the forefront of national discussions on marijuana law reform and commerce as it has led agitation over liberalisation of the plant for decades. Read more >>
