READY FOR INTERNSHIP - Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute’s (BTVI) Career Services Officer, Jessica Murray, speaks to three of the students preparing for a four-week internship.  From left to right are: Jade Sands, Air conditioning; Mrs. Murray; Javano Johnson, Electrical Installation and Dariel Gibson, Business Administration.

Students in their final semester at The Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI) are preparing to culminate the theory learned with a four-week intense internship.

During a recent internship seminar organized by the Students Affairs Department, BTVI Career Services Officer, Jessica Murray, noted that the students are expected to exude service excellence, with work ethics, presentation and deportment being key.

The 30 interns will each work for 40 hours a week, amounting to 160 hours for the four weeks.  They will receive professional experience at various organizations ranging from educational facilities to electronics and air conditioning companies and even as far as at Morton Salt in Inagua. They will have the opportunity to gain additional competencies, network and possibly secure jobs.

Mrs. Murray encouraged the students to be professional at all times while interning.  “You must be open to learning and be quality candidates as it is possible to secure future employment with the company. You must leave a good impression with the internship host,” she underscored.

Before the internship comes to an end, BTVI’s Student Affairs Department will also hold a Resume` Building Workshop to further prepare the interns for the competitive workforce.

Bahamas Against Cancer Family Reunion event to take place in Miami Gardens
By Jeannie R. Gibson

A South Floridian and descendant of The Bahamas, Mr. Sydney Ferguson, has initiated a plan to assist Bahamians who continue to visit Florida in large numbers for cancer treatments as well as to help and support friends or family members visiting to assist those battling the disease.

Mr. Ferguson’s plan will begin on Saturday, October 26th, with the launching of the first Bahamas Against Cancer Family Reunion event.  The festival will take place in Miami Gardens, Florida at The Betty T. Ferguson Amphitheater 3000 NW 199 St.  from 2:00 pm until 10:00pm. And will be a fun filled family day with music, dance, and Bahamian cuisine.

The Reunion will feature a stage with live entertainment providing a variety of music including Calypso, Gospel, R&B, Rap and Reggae.  An additional highlight will be a “Bahamian Cook-Off” where the best local Bahamian Restaurants and Chefs will compete to determine who makes the best Conch Fritters, Conch Salad and Johnny Cake.  The winner of this event will receive a fabulous prize. Vendors at the event will be displaying and selling arts and crafts, and clothing, as well as distributing information, registering voters and much more.

Bahamian clergymen from the South Florida district, Pastors Dave Ellis and Vincent Brown, will be assisting Mr. Ferguson as 1st vice President and 2nd Vice President, of the non profit Foundation that has been formed with the sole purpose of raising funds to assist Bahamians in the fight with and against cancer.

In addition to assisting those visiting for treatments, the foundation also plans on implementing an educational process that will help fellow Bahamians to understand cancer from its beginnings, use that knowledge in the creation and improvement of cancer treatments - to relieve the suffering of cancer patients - and to provide education about cancer risk, prevention, and care. The ultimate vision of the Foundation is to establish a living community that will house patients, family and friends from The Bahamas while they are in Florida on visits involving cancer care and treatments.

The Bahamas Against Cancer Event at the end of October will be an opportunity for members of the community to attend and contribute towards the cause in one way or another, however, the Foundation expects that the public will donate in many other forms.  Donations are invited in the form of one-time gift of cash, frequent flier miles, monthly donations, or matching gifts program at the workplace. Corporate sponsorships are also being sought.

For more information on the event as well as donation and sponsorships, interested persons can contact Mr. Ferguson at 1-786-486-8531.

"Dear All,

I would like to tell you about my current and recent projects.

I am showing in Must-Have, a novel group exhibition which is part of the London Design Festival. Coordinated by ART:I:CURATE, the show interweaves artworks with home furnishings in a functioning retail showroom. Open during store hours until September 22nd.

You can also see my work in the ongoing exhibition 40 years of Bahamian Art at the National Art Gallery of The Bahamas, an overview of the development of art in The Bahamas since independence.

This Summer I participated in the LoBe Residency in Berlin for five weeks with German artist Ingo Gerken to produce all new work for the LoBe gallery.

I was also selected by Turner Prize nominee Paul Noble for the Creekside Open, a biennial exhibition held at A.P.T Gallery in London.

And here you can watch a video of one of the collaborative works I made with artist Lisa Selby using subwoofers and beach sand for our recent exhibition Future Memories."

The course on “Smart Cities” will be offered by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), with the cooperation of the Inter-American Press Association and administered by the International Center for Journalists

The IDB announced today that applications are now being accepted for an online course for journalists in Latin America and the Caribbean aimed at helping them cover the issue of urban development in the region. The course, offered by the IDB along with the Inter-American Press Association (IAPA) and administered and taught by the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ), will take place in October and November.

“Smart Cities: Covering Urban Development in Latin America and the Caribbean” will include a six-week online course in Spanish, Portuguese and English for up to 60 journalists about urban development in Latin America, followed by a five-day fellowship in Washington, D.C., for the program’s most outstanding participants. Journalists in Latin America and the Caribbean are welcome to apply.

Participants will learn how to cover issues that affect urban planning and development, such as transportation, natural disasters, citizen security and infrastructure. The online course will include guest speakers and instructive videos on the topic. The journalists’ work will emphasize story production. Under the terms of their participation, all selected journalists will produce and publish news reports, feature stories, videos, photos and multimedia.

Journalists who complete the course and publish stories on the subject will receive a certificate of course completion.

A committee chaired by the ICFJ will select a small number of participants who produced the best stories to travel to Washington, D.C. in early 2014 for the IDB-IAPA fellowship. During this five-day fellowship, ICFJ will work with the IDB-IAPA fellows to develop further multimedia-rich reports and expand their knowledge on the program’s selected topic through meetings with experts from a variety of organizations, including the IDB. The fellowship also will provide an introduction to data journalism to cover development issues.

Latin America and the Caribbean is the world’s second-most urbanized region, with 82 percent of its citizens living in cities. Over the past 30 years, millions of people migrated to the region’s biggest urban centers because that is where the most jobs were. But in many cases, their great numbers overwhelmed the transportation, housing and public safety infrastructure. Today, it is medium-size cities that are growing fast – in some cases, two to three times as fast as the region’s megacities.

The course is aimed at helping journalists answer the question: What can be done to make sure that all of Latin America’s cities, big and small, develop in an orderly fashion, providing adequate services to citizens?

Application: Apply here

Deadline to apply: Oct. 9
Dates for online course: Oct. 28-Dec. 9.

BTVI Exposes Students to Art

EXCITED ABOUT LEARNING – These BTVI students are excited about learning about the movers and shakers of the nation through ‘The Bahamian Collection,’ a photographic exhibition being held at The National Art Gallery of The Bahamas.  From left to right are: Ryan Harris, Information Technology; Aaronique Bain, Construction Technology and Diane Smith, Electrical Engineering student.

The Bahamas Technical & Vocational Institute

It was a cultural awakening for approximately 350 faculty, staff, students and family members of The Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI) as they recently flocked to The National Art Gallery of The Bahamas for the much-touted ‘The Bahamian Collection’ photographic exhibition.

Well executed, the strikingly artistic portraits of 40 men and women represent the depth of the Bahamian spirit via the lens of Duke and Lisa Wells. The extraordinary exhibition is in commemoration of the 40th anniversary of The Bahamas' independence.

BTVI’s Student Affairs Coordinator, Mrs. Raquel Bethel explained that the trip to the art gallery was to encourage those in the Student Success, Entrepreneurial Workforce Prep, English classes and the wider BTVI community to get to know more about their cultural heritage.  Assistant Manager and Academic Dean, Mr. Valdez K. Russell, added that it was to further build the BTVI community and expose students to a greater depth of Bahamian culture.

“Based on the facial expressions and the lively banter, I think we did well. These students are evidently engaged, from the curious to the enthused,” said Mr. Russell. “It’s not just about going to class.  We want to introduce our students to art, as some of them may not just go out and visit the art gallery,” he noted. Many of the students had never visited the art gallery before and were impressed with what they saw and learned.

Information Technology Management student, Ryan Harris, said the exhibition made him more appreciative of Bahamian history.  “It is eye opening because up until today, I wasn’t abreast of all this history.  These are the people we should know – people like Niki Kelly, Gail Saunders and Stan Burnside,” he said with pride.

Aaronique Bain, Construction Technology student stressed the importance of high school students also being exposed to the exhibition.  “I didn’t know the history of these people.  They worked hard and paved the way for our generation,” she said.

Meanwhile, Deoran Ferguson, whose focus is Air Conditioning, considered the portrait exhibition to be unique.  “It is intriguing to see these photographs used as art.  In fact, everything in life is art.  Our lives are canvasses; it’s up to us which picture we paint,” said Ferguson.

To further expose BTVI’s students to art, it is the Student Affairs department’s goal to contact a few people featured in the exhibition to be a part of its Speakers’ Gallery.  This, Mrs. Bethel said, would expand the conversation about culture.

3rd Annual Abaco Kayak Challenge - Saturday, 9th November, 2013

3rd Kayak Challenge: Great Day for Great Causes

Friends of the Environment and the Abaco Cancer Society challenge you to paddle for a cause! The two Abaco-based non-profits are partnering on the Abaco Kayak Challenge, Up a Creek With a Paddle - an event to encourage the public to be healthy and enjoy our beautiful environment. Abaco's third annual Kayak Challenge on Saturday, November 9th at Pete’s Pub & Gallery in Little Harbour, Abaco.

The event was created to raise awareness and support for these two Abaco charities by encouraging people to get out and enjoy Abaco’s beautiful outdoors in a low-impact eco-friendly way. Many of the paddlers are either cancer survivors or paddling in support of someone who has battled or is battling the disease. The courses for the Kayak Challenge are located within the proposed East Abaco Creeks National Park, a network of mangrove wetlands that provide valuable habitat to a diversity of marine species. Friends of the Environment created the national park proposal in partnership with the Bahamas National Trust. It is currently being considered by Government. The proposal seeks to conserve these habitats while still allowing for fishing and other cultural activities to continue. Areas such as this are very important to the marine environment of The Bahamas and our way of life!

One of our focuses this year will be to try and ensure a higher presence of paddlers from other islands.  To this end, we have managed to secure a commitment from Bahamas Ferries to run the ferry service from Nassau to Sandy Point, Abaco to accommodate the paddlers.  There will be a discount of 25% per person and 20% per vehicle.  However, the catch is that they will require a minimum of 6 vehicles and at least 40 individuals.  We must have the minimum requirement by October 15th.  So, advance registration is a must!  We are also happy to assist with queries regarding accommodation and will assist with transport of crafts to Little Harbour.

Any craft you can paddle will be welcome, including kayaks, paddle boards and canoes - just no engines!  There will be 3 courses to choose from: 5 miles, 8 miles, or 13 miles that will take paddlers into and through the scenic tidal creeks of the Bight of Old Robinson, which is included in the proposed East Abaco Creeks National Park. Support boats will be on hand to assist paddlers, make sure they stay on course and provide water and snacks.  Paddlers will be welcomed back with a beach party featuring music, pig roast and raffle of a new Hobie Lanai Kayak. Last year we had more than 80 paddlers winding through the creeks and a large group waiting at Pete’s Pub to welcome the paddlers home.

Paddlers can either pay a $25 registration fee and agree to raise $100 in sponsorship by the day of the event, or pay a $100 registration fee.  FRIENDS and the Abaco Cancer Society are also seeking business sponsors to support the event who will be featured on the event t-shirts. If you are interested, please contact sasha.fair@gmail.com.

More information about the event and registration forms are available on the Friends of the Environment's website: www.FriendsoftheEnvironment.org or on Facebook under the event 3rd Annual Kayak Challenge. We hope to see you there!

Bahamas’ Nasssau/Paradise Island to host Heat Training Camp October 1st-4th

MIAMI, FL, (September, 23. 2013) – Nassau/Paradise Island, in The Islands Of The Bahamas, will play host to the NBA World champion 2013 Miami Heat Team who will for the first time ever hold their training camp outside of Florida and the Continental U.S.A.

As Miami’s closest neighbor, a mere 55 miles off the Florida U.S. mainland, The Bahamas have been the backyard playground for Floridians for years, and are embracing the opportunity to host Miami’s white hot team.

Bahamas Minister of Tourism, The Honourable, Obie Wilchcombe said that “The Bahamas Ministry Of Tourism is looking to build a viable Sports Tourism program that will position the destination as a sporting mecca but also create a selling position intended to not only attract major/minor league groups but to facilitate the staging of some of the world’s most historic athletic events and tournaments.”

“The government and people of The Bahamas look forward and stand ready to host the championship team that represents the type of sporting groups that will assist in showcasing  our country as a sporting haven,”  the  Minister  said.

The NBA championship team,  following its Training Camp in The Bahamas will be opening their  regular season Oct. 29 against the visiting Chicago Bulls.

In June, The  Heat  became one of the few teams in the National Basketball Association to repeat as champions and win the Larrry O'Brien trophy in back to back years. The  champions  have now appeared in three consecutive championship finals, and won two of the last three.

Heat executives and Government officials of The Bahamas agree that with its luxury hotels featuring world class amenities, a unique culture and outstanding beauty, The Islands Of The Bahamas present the perfect setting for the champions to prepare for the opportunity to clinch a three peat.

(Atlanta, Georgia)…With the city still mourning the loss of the founder of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference Women, creator of the Drum Major Justice Awards and civil rights pioneer Mrs. Evelyn Lowery, the season was ripe for the Bahamas Consulate Office of Atlanta to showcase Marion Bethel’s Womanish Ways: Freedom, Human Rights and Democracy at Atlanta’s historic Spelman College and the Allen Entrepreneurial International Institute.

Alfred Sears; filmmaker and author Marion Bethel; CEO/Founder of the Allen Entrepreneurial International Institute, Dr. Bill Allen; and Hon. Randy Rolle, Consul General to Atlanta and surrounding areas. (Photo: Kenyon Missick)

Bethel, who was in Atlanta with her husband former Attorney General and Minister of Education the Hon. Alfred Sears, toured the city with Bahamas Consul General to the area, the Hon. Randy Rolle. In addition to meeting some of Atlanta’s influential African-American entrepreneurs and activists, she also had the opportunity to talk about the documentary with Roger Bobb, former Vice-President for Tyler Perry Studios and CEO/President of Bobbcat Films during a visit to his studios. The producer is known for Meet The Browns, The Rickey Smiley Show and several Tyler Perry Films featuring the character Madea, plus The Family That Preys, For Colored Girls and Why Did I Get Married and its sequel that was filmed in The Bahamas.

Bethel also shared her vision with billionaire Dr. Bill Allen, founder of the Allen Entrepreneurial International Institute as he hosted her and the Bahamas Consul General to lunch. After receiving a copy of Womanish Ways DVD, Allen encouraged her to continue to tell the stories so that they are not forgotten and shared his own inspirational life of success, highlighting how he went from being born on a plantation, the grandson of a former slave, to establishing and overseeing an internationally recognized educational empire.

“I am very pleased,” said Bethel following the film’s showing at Spelman later that evening. “I am very happy that you all turned out to share this event with us. It is really a joy… I want to say thank you to the Consul General, Randy Rolle for being so enthusiastic about making this event happen and I also want to thank SIS [Spelman Independent Scholars] for allowing me to come and share Womanish Ways and also for the sincere hospitality they have shown me and my husband. I also want to thank Dr. Gloria Gayles for believing in me and believing in the work that I do and just having the faith and the support is incredible and I can’t thank you for all that you’ve done and for all that we will continue to do together.”

Consul General Rolle stated that people like Marion Bethel have much to contribute as it pertains to sharing the history of The Bahamas, especially in a city like Atlanta which is known as the birthplace of the Civil Rights Movement.

“I am very pleased that Ms Bethel was able to make the tremendous impact she made with her presentation,” said Rolle. “I am also pleased that Min. Sears was present as the former Minister of Education to see the opportunities that exist for not just Bahamian students at Spelman and at the Allen International Institute, but also the opportunities that exist for those enrolled in these institutions to see the unique learning and cultural offerings that are in The Bahamas. At all of the events we attended today, I’ve had personal feedback and thank you’s from those who have a new found appreciation for Bahamian history, culture, and even filmmaking. It is certainly encouraging and we look forward to fostering a greater relationship in these areas.”

During his thank you speech, Rolle invited Dr. Gayles forward and recognized her as the first recipient of the Atlanta Consul General’s Office Friends of The Bahamas Award. Overwhelmed with the honor, Dr. Gayles invited SIS to join her to accept it. The token, Rolle explained, is to thank those in his jurisdiction for their contributions to Bahamians and The Bahamas.

Local Beauty Industry Attracts International Attention

Under the banner, BEAUTY – BRAND – BUSINESS in The BAHAMAS, local entrepreneur Dr. Natasha Carter owner of Pizazz Beauty Shop will be hosting a day of beauty and philanthropy on December 15, 2013.

According to the event host, she has traveled throughout the USA attending various shows where thousands of cosmetologists from around the world converge to upgrade their skills and business, be introduced to new products and trends and to network.  Hair Show and Competitions are the conventions for the beauty industry.

Dr. Carter saw an opportunity to marry her vision and to bring visitors to the shores of Grand Bahama to boost the local economy and thus developed a product and branded it IMAGINE HAIR – Hair Show & Competition.

IMAGINE HAIR has  attracted A-listed celebrities in the industry, including Karlie Redd of Love & Hip Hop Atlanta, Redd Product Line and Hair Salon owner;  Derek J celebrity stylist of The Real Housewives of Atlanta and Oxygen’s  Hair Battle Spectacular and Seven Adrin Washington, celebrity stylist for Patti Labelle, Jennifer Hudson, Niki Minaj, Gabrielle Union and others.

Additionally, the event will showcase notable brands as Dudley’s, Kayvel, Hair Basic, Design Essential, Affirm, Black Opal, Ardyss, Exquisite Quay, IT Works, Naturally Here, Baha-Retreat Anti –Aging Spa and many more.

This ultimate Hair Show and Competition to be held at the Grand Lucayan Convention Centre has placed heads in bed for Grand Bahama just in time for the holidays. IMAGINE HAIR as a result of its promotional tours and campaigns is expecting a large contingent of 100 plus cosmetologists and vendors from New Providence, a group of 30 cosmetology students from Abaco along with their mentors and industry professionals from the United States.

IMAGINE HAIR – Hair Show & Competition is now branding internationally as an annual event.  We hear about the various niche markets in relations to our tourism product including religious tourism, sports tourism, medical tourism, heritage tourism, eco-tourism and entertainment tourism. We can introduce a new niche in our tourism product that attracts thousands annually from the beauty industry comparative to the Bronner Brothers Show in Atlanta.

Dr. Natasha Carter noted that the beauty industry includes hair salons, barber shops, nail salons, make-up, fashion, jewelry and accessories, skin, health and hair care products, spas and fragrance related businesses. Many times cosmetologists are looked down upon and not respected as business persons. Despite the economic downturn, this industry has seen a steady growth of 3.4% annually since 2008. Globally, it is multi-billion dollar industry with consumers spending in excess of $350 billion a year.

Women, men and children take the time to groom themself to ensure they put their best foot forward when stepping out contributing to this growth. Additionally, cosmetologists play an integral role in the self-image of their clients. Their chair serves as therapy session for the elite to the at-home mom or unemployed dad.

IMAGINE HAIR – Hair Show and Competition promises to live up to its name, if you can imagine it, it will be there. Grand Bahama is invited to be a part of this exciting event that will WOW the audience. Tickets can be purchased at Gizmos & Gadgets or Pizazz Beauty Shop.

Admissions Clerk, Yuwanna Burrows proudly wears her poppy.

Students, faculty and staff of The Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI) continue to support worthy causes. They recently threw their support behind the Sister Sister Breast Cancer Support Group and now they are supporting World War I and II veterans by purchasing poppies.

Beauty Trades HOD, Dr. Donnalee Minnis and Cosmetology instructor,
Janet Grant support worthy causes.

The Bahamas has 20 registered World War II veterans and 27 registered widows, and Coordinator of BTVI’s Student Affairs department, Mrs. Raquel Bethel, expressed excitement over BTVI’s willingness to make small donations towards supporting the poppy appeal. “We are pleased to stand shoulder to shoulder with all those who served in World Wars I and II and encourage the BTVI family to wear their poppies with pride,” she said.

WE SUPPORT WAR VETERANS – BTVI’s Maths instructor, Stanley Gordon and student, Celeste Romer commemorating the sacrifices of the armed forces.

Moreover, Mrs. Bethel noted the importance of becoming educated about the significance of the poppy. “We are grateful when people support the survivors of both wars and remember the fallen; however, everyone wearing a poppy should know why they’re doing so. We really want to pay homage to those brave soldiers who risked their lives for our freedom. It was really a monumental sacrifice. They literally put country above self, and for that we are indebted to them,” stated Ms. Bethel.

BTVI Cosmetology students give back to war veterans for their sacrifices, by buying poppies.

Remembrance Day – also known as Poppy Day or Veteran’s Day - is a day to commemorate the sacrifices of members of the armed forces and of civilians particularly during World Wars I and II. It is observed on the 11th November to recall the end of World War I on that date in 1918. It was the red poppy which bloomed across some of the worst battlefields during the war and their brilliant colour has become an appropriate symbol of the blood spilled in the war.
