Guns and God: Growing number of churches want armed security

“Fifty years ago, you could say no guns should be allowed in church, but times have changed,” said a police chief who runs a volunteer church security team.

Trampus Taylor, head of the Ava Assembly of God's security team, outside the church in Ava, Missouri.

By Mary Pflum

When Chris Crews prepares for church on Sunday mornings, he follows a routine. He rises early. He puts on his church clothes, a button-down shirt paired with blue jeans or khakis. Then, before leaving the house with his wife and two children, he straps a firearm — a 9 mm or a .45 — to his right hip.

“I don’t leave home without a gun,” Crews said. “It’s kind of like the old American Express card ads: I just won’t leave home without it.”

Crews, 47, is part of the security team at Ava Assembly of God, a Pentecostal church of 300 members in Ava, Missouri. The church has no paid security guards. Instead, it counts on a team of 18 church members to keep fellow congregants safe. None of the security team members are paid and all carry handguns.  Read more >>

A Bahamian law firm and the National Sports Authority’s (NSA) former chairman are among the local persons and companies being targeted for examination by Fyre Festival investigators.

CF Butler & Associates, the law firm headed by attorney Craig Butler, who once unsuccessfully sought the PLP’s Nassau Village nomination, and LeRoy Archer, ex-NSA head and former managing director of BISX-listed Commonwealth Brewery, have been named among those that the Fyre Festival’s Chapter 7 trustee wants court permission to interrogate.

Documents filed on Friday with the southern New York federal bankruptcy court, which have been obtained by Tribune Business, reveal that Gregory Messer is seeking a court order to serve subpoenas on both Bahamian and US entities that supplied services/goods to a festival that became a chaos-stricken debacle threatening the Bahamas’ tourism reputation in April 2017.  Read more >>

“This place got destroyed by two hurricanes a [few years back],” explained South Florida surf photographer and longtime Bahamas traveler, Nicola Lugo, about this island that we were, quite frankly, reluctant if not downright squeamish about exposing to the world. The warrant was issued after Nygard failed to appear in court multiple times for a sentencing hearing related to two contempt of court convictions

A judge in the Bahamas issued a warrant Monday for the arrest of Canadian fashion mogul Peter Nygard, the latest twist in a strange, convoluted legal battle over dredging around Nygard’s luxurious beachfront estate.

The warrant was issued after Nygard failed to appear in court multiple times for a sentencing hearing related to two contempt of court convictions, after a judge found that he had repeatedly ignored a 2013 injunction that banned him from dredging.

Fred Smith, a lawyer with Save the Bays, an organization working to protect the country’s marine environment from development, said he believes the arrest warrant was issued “in an effort to show that there should be the appropriate respect for the court in the Bahamas.” Save the Bays alleges that Nygard has doubled the size of his property at Nygard Cay through illegal dredging, and is blocking the natural flow of sand to a nearby national park and a popular beach.  Read more >>

Shakespeare in Paradise Contingent of Seven Represent
Ringplay Productions and The Bahamas
in The Czech Republic

There’s something about capital cities. They are oft regarded as the hearts of nations – the culturally beating centres intended to confirm for locals and introduce to visitors the essence of a country. They don’t hold the whole of a nation’s story but theirs is a significant contribution to the overall landscape of what defines a country. In this regard, Nassau is no exception; neither is Prague.

After 10 years of declaring and demonstrating that The Bahamas is an ideal place for a Shakespeare theatre festival, Dr. Nicolette Bethel, Shakespeare in Paradise (SIP) Co-founder and Festival Director, led a team of seven delegates to the annual Shakespeare Theatre Association (STA) Conference in Prague, the city of a hundred spires. The capital city of Czech Republic, Prague is best defined by its amazing architectural nod to a storied past, crowded pubs, a vibrant theatre scene and that undeniable, energizing buzz typically emitted by capital cities.
The “Praguelodytes”, a term coined by SIP Co-Founder and Ringplay Productions’ Artistic Director Philip Burrows, also included Delores “Red” Adderley, Claudette “Cookie” Allens, Erin Knowles-McKinney, Dario McKinney, Jovanna Hepburn and Patrice Francis. They left Nassau on Thursday, January 3rd and arrived, via Atlanta and Amsterdam, in Prague on the morning of Friday, January 4th and spent the next nine days being immersed in Shakespearean goodness: joining Shakespeare theatre practitioners from around the world in acting workshops, plenary sessions on artistic, educational and management issues as well as performances in both English and Czech. Both Dr. Bethel and Knowles-McKinney served as panellists on two separate provocative discussions on “Shakespeare around the World” and “Colour Conscious Casting” respectively.
Associate Artistic Director Erin Knowles-McKinney remarked: “STA 2019 was an invigorating, inspiring charge of theatrical energy I never knew existed. To say that I enjoyed would be an understatement. I have found an added driving force behind the title Associate Artistic Director and I am looking forward to SIP 2019 with an insatiable hunger.”

The nine-day conference culminated with a banquet in the Lobkowicz Palace at Prague Castle.

“It was so rewarding and fulfilling for all of us,” said Delores “Red” Adderley, Dundas Manager and Box Office Manager.
The contingent has returned home inspired with a renewed commitment to produce excellent theatrical productions both during the SIP Fall Festival and during the Dundas Repertory Season which has just been revived by Ringplay. The inaugural production, which ran for two weekends in January (18th – 20th and 25th – 27th ), was Trevor Rhone’s Smile Orange, directed by Anthony “Skeebo” Roberts.

Most beach-goers hope to avoid shark encounters altogether. For adventurous nature-lovers, however, shark diving is practically a required bucket list experience. It’s one thing to see them from inside a cage; it’s quite another to experience a hands-on encounter with the opportunity to handle and tag them. Next month, one Bahamian resort in The Exumas will provide travelers the option to do just that.  Read more >>

Ask any leader or successful entrepreneur, and they will tell you that it is critical to always be learning. It is no coincidence that people like Bill Gates and Oprah Winfrey ravenously consume dozens of books a year, and that financial giants like Warren Buffett say they devote 6 hours a day to reading and studying.

Books and audiobooks are readily available through free library apps like Libby, and many organizations -- some of the most prestigious in the world, in fact -- offer free online courses for anyone who has the drive and desire to expand their horizons.

What follows are some incredible classes that tie directly to the needs of entrepreneurs. All you need is an internet connection and the will to grow. As the poet W.B. Yeats once wrote, “Education is not the filling of a pot but the lighting of a fire.”  Read more >>

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Teachers at the L.W. Young Junior High School on Wednesday claimed that they must endure the rude behaviour of some students because there is a lack of administrative support.

A teacher at the school, who spoke to Eyewitness News on the condition of anonymity, alleged that students do not obey classroom rules and they often display disruptive outbursts which cripple the learning process.

“One of the major challenges we face is discipline,” the teacher lamented. “It’s very hard to control the students when you are not being supported by the administration.  Read more >>
