NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The Bahamas’ economy is expected to sustain its “upward trajectory” over the near-term, with the majority of gains projected to accrue from improved tourism figures, according to The Central Bank of The Bahamas.

According to the bank’s latest Monthly Economic and Financial Developments (MEFD) report for April, the tourism sector remained buoyant over the review period with sustained gains in both the high value-added air arrivals and cruise visitors.

The most recent data from the Ministry of Tourism showed that total visitor arrivals advanced by 5.9 percent in March, outpacing the 3.6 percent gains recorded in the same month the previous year.  Read more >>

by Mike Godfrey, Tax-News.com, Washington

The Bahamas announced a number of significant reforms in its 2019/20 Budget, released on May 29, 2019, including a new tax on banks, which will replace annual fees, and new VAT obligations on online marketplaces and the removal of VAT on exported services.

The Budget announces that all banks will no longer be subject to business licence fees. Instead, moving forward, all banks will be subject to supervisory fees and charges, and those with Bahamian dollar liabilities of over USD100m will incur a Domestic Systemically Important Institution (DSII) levy of 0.3 percent per year, which will be payable to the Central Bank of The Bahamas. The Government released no further details on the regime but said the new structure will result in a marginal increase in fees and tax from banks.

The Budget further announced that all online marketplaces that advertise and facilitate vacation rentals in The Bahamas will now be required to pay VAT on their rental and related sales to consumers in The Bahamas.  Read more >>

It's been another busy month at FRIENDS and the Kenyon Centre with local high school students building coral nurseries in the yard, the Kenyon Centre being filled with a wide variety of interesting scientists, and traveling to Cape Eleuthera for the Island School Symposium where we were inspired by their work and our shared visions of environmental sustainability for the future.

Despite all this excitement the moment that stands out the most was when I overheard a student's mother talking about the impact FRIENDS is having on her son.  Among other things he shared with his family the importance of protecting coral... but when she said "I never knew that sand on our beaches came from parrot fish poop!" I jumped from behind my desk to see who this was. When parents are excited to be learning from their children who share what they learn from FRIENDS' environmental educational programs... that's what it's all about!  Thank you to all of you who support the great work that is being done through FRIENDS, these impacts happen because of you!  Please share in the pride we feel at the differences we are making through teaching the next generation.

Sincerely,

Cha Boyce

Program Update

Project Coral
Last month, we completed construction of our coral nursery trees with the help of students from Long Bay School. All five of our nursery trees were then installed at Fowl Cay Reef with assistance from Hayley-Jo Carr of the Reef Rescue Network and Dive Guana. The nurseries were populated with coral fragments from other reefs, with boat assistance from Froggies Out Island Adventures. These nurseries will be maintained through volunteer efforts and the coral fragments, once grown, will help with restoration efforts at reefs along the Sea of Abaco.

Our education team followed through with the installation of our coral tree nurseries at Fowl Cay Reef. Left: Lyndeisha securing the air in the buoy at the top of the tree. Right: Lianna adding one of the staghorn coral fragments to a tree.

Kenyon Centre Update:

Ducky: Take a look at me now!

Volunteer John Calogero visited the Kenyon Centre last month to lend his expertise and artistry to continuing Ducky's re-articulation. He did an amazing job creating a support frame for the rib cage and re-articulating Ducky's pectoral fins. We are so thankful for his contribution! We have a few more small projects before Ducky is complete. Stay tuned...and please come by to check it out.

Ministry of Environment Visit to Abaco
Ministry of Environment and Housing (MOEH) is working on getting us all prepared for the 2020 nationwide ban on single use plastics. Environmental Officers Kendria Ferguson and Lyndee Bowe visited Abaco from May 23rd - 25th to host a town meeting and business consultations to raise awareness on the upcoming ban on select single use plastics. Issues addressed included: the "4bidden" plastic items which include point of sale plastic bags, plastic utensils, plastic straws and styrofoam containers, alternatives for these items, and the positive impact this ban will have on the environment and waste management in the country. To conclude their visit, the MOEH officers partnered with Maxwell's Supermarket to distribute over 500 free reusable bags. This initiative is very exciting; upon implementation, The Bahamas will join more than 60 countries worldwide that have already enforced or are in the process of formulating bans on selected plastic and Styrofoam products.

Fishing for Plastic Derby
Worldwide, plastic pollution is a major concern. Seasoned sailors Angela Burns and Bill Atherholt coordinated their first Fishing for Plastic Derby here in Abaco to bring awareness to the issue, highlighting plastic as an "invasive species". The turn-out at the weigh-in on May 25th at The Jib Room exceeded expectations with a total of 10 teams and 80 persons made up of local businesses (Abaco Print Shop, BTC & Bahamas Compostables), community members and visiting cruisers. All together, 4,194 pounds of plastic debris were collected from across the island's coastlines, leaving everyone with a sense of pride and accomplishment in aiding the battle against plastic pollution.

Winning Teams:
Yellowtail (Abaco Print Shop) - 1,177lbs
Meet it Dirty, Leave it Clean - 747lbs
Pelican - 567lbs

We are so happy to have been a part of this exciting initiative and look forward to see what all they have in store for Abaco. Fishing for Plastic hopes to expand their reaches by introducing a program where persons are paid for collecting plastic waste.

turtles?

An oldie, but goodie! This video was narrated 8 years ago by 14 year old Abaco student, James Boyce, who explains why turtles are so amazing and worth preserving while telling the story of turtles and how Bahamians responded to the 2009 ban on turtle harvesting. James won a student contest as part of one of FRIENDS' programs and his prize was to make a short film on the topic of his choice in partnership with Conch Salad TV.

Atlanta Junkanoo Group performs

ATLANTA, GA, “An unqualified success,” was how attendees to the ‘Summertime in Freeport’ presentation described the gala event hosted by The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism and Aviation’s (BMOTA) Atlanta Sales Team.

The dynamic preview of summertime fun and excitement in Freeport, Grand Bahama drew Bahamas Specialist travel agents, Atlanta influencers and media to the stylish Buckhead Club overlooking the Atlanta skyline.

The festivities at the Buckhead Club featured a business-to-business (B2B) networking reception with Freeport destination vendors, followed by a presentation, ‘Summertime in Freeport’ and an elegant dinner culminating with entertainment by top Bahamian performing artist Julien “ Believe” who rocked the floor with a medley of his “Junkanoo Pop” hits. The pulsating rhythms of Bahamian Junkanoo brought the grand finale to this memorable evening.

Freeport, the second major city of The Islands Of The Bahamas, was the focal point of the evening, and the event’s decorative theme drew inspiration from the Island’s promotional color — bright orange.

Shown from Left: Nicholas Wisdom, Bahamas Tourist Office Atlanta; Karenda Swain, Freeport Grand Bahama Tourist Office; Juan Romero, Grand Lucayan Resort; Carmel Churchill, Grand Bahama Island Tourism Board; Garbrielle Archer, Bahamas Tourist Office, Atlanta; Tina Lee, Bahamas Tourist Office, Florida; Anita Johnson-Patty, Global Communications, Bahamas Ministry of Tourism & Aviation; Lucretia Webb, Delta Vacations; Dominique Smith, Pelican Bay Hotel; and Phelan Ferguson, Bahamas Tourist Office, Atlanta.

Touted as a huge success, the event was organized by the sales team of the Bahamas Tourist Office, Atlanta under the leadership of Area Manager, Garbrielle Archer. “Freeport is a vacation paradise that offers a variety of unique and authentic experiences that visitors are seeking. Tonight’s event gave us the opportunity to showcase our natural assets. Freeport is easily accessible from Atlanta with twice weekly non-stop service on Delta and daily one stop service on Bahamasair through Fort Lauderdale,” Archer said.

Phelan Ferguson, Senior Manager of the Bahamas Tourist Office, Atlanta spoke about the Bahamas Specialist Program for travel agents and the rewards and the resources available once the agents are registered.  He also took time to briefly highlight the BMOTA’s current Brand Campaign that features world class musical artist, Lenny Kravitz, who is also of Bahamian descent and a resident of The Bahamas.

Travel Agents are shown arriving at the Bahamas Tourist Office Atlanta event.

Karenda Swain of the Freeport (Grand Bahama) Tourist Office shared with the audience, the lineup of exciting ‘Summertime in Freeport’ cultural events and activities on tap for the months of July and August.  She informed attendees about the upcoming Goombay Summer Festival and the Junkanoo Summer Festival, and also updated them on new hotel developments.

Swain also spoke about one of The Bahamas’ signature programs, “People to People,” which pairs visitors with local Bahamians who share a common interest or background, to allow the visitor to be a Bahamian for a day.

Carmel Churchill of the Grand Bahama Island Tourism Board (GBITB)expanded on the myriad of options of ‘Summertime in Freeport’ by outlining 40 plus fun activities visitors to Freeport can participate in —  kayaking, horseback riding, dolphin encounters, snorkeling, diving, fishing, eco adventures, or simply luxuriating on one of the island’s many beaches, just to name a few.

Forbes Charter Services, Bahamian Brewery, Sands Beer and Bootleg Chocolates.

Gifts donated throughout the evening were generously sponsored by Freeport vendors participating in the event, and by many who were not in attendance. Gifts ranged from swag bags packed with all the essentials for a day at the beach to trips and grand prizes that included transportation to the island, hotels, ground transfers and on island activities.

Atlanta Tourism Team is shown with partners, travel agents and media.

Remarking on the overall outcome of the evening, Grand Bahama Island Tourism Board (GBITB) representative, Mrs. Churchill noted that “The event fully portrayed the diversity of vacation offerings to be experienced in Freeport. Guests in attendance got a peek of what our island has to offer and we certainly gave them something to look forward to or to share with others to encourage them to visit our destination. Julien ’Believe’ and the Junkanoo performers did an outstanding job with bringing the sounds of our Island, and the menu, which included conch salad and red snapper, depicted the flavors of Grand Bahama.”

“The event this evening here in Atlanta  and those held earlier in Florida have vividly showcased all that our island has to offer.  We in Freeport look forward to rolling out the welcome mat to travel professionals and their clients, bloggers, influencers and the like, to our destination this summer so that they can experience firsthand all of what they got a preview of, and so much more,” Churchill said.

BTVI’s Dean of Construction Trades and Workforce Development, Alexander Darville; Chair of Information Technology, Anthony Ramtulla and Chair of Math, Archilene O’Brien presented papers at the fourth annual TVET conference held recently in Jamaica.

For the first time in the history of the Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute, three of its employees had the opportunity to present papers at the same international conference.

Dean of Construction Trades and Workforce Development, Alexander Darville; Chair of Information Technology, Anthony Ramtulla and Chair of Math, Archilene O’Brien, were presenters at the fourth annual international conference on technical vocational education and training (TVET) held recently in Jamaica.

The presentations were on Working to Learn a Skill: The Apprenticeship Model for The Bahamas, Information Communication and Technology Skills for a Global Economy and Making Math Understandable for TVET Students Using Technology: A Case Study of ALEKS.

Ms. O’Brien introduced the Assessment and Learning in Knowledge Spaces (ALEKS) web-based artificially intelligent system to BTVI back in 2016. It zeroes in on the strengths and weaknesses of a student’s math knowledge, reports the findings to the student and then helps improve the student’s knowledge of Math via technology.

Ms. O’Brien summed up the three-day conference as “transformational.” She said being able to add value to such a conference was a “wow moment.”

“That collaboration on programs and projects and interconnectivity of a Caribbean region for our students, it almost seemed like one Bahamas became one Caribbean,” she exclaimed.

“Too many times you are in your small corner and the world passes you by. As an institution, it puts your spot on the graph. It creates a level of reflection and urgency of decisive action,” she stressed.

Additionally, BTVI’s Dean of Construction and Workforce, Alexander Darville noted that the annual conference is a call for a skilled workforce, which is needed globally.

“Technology is changing and there is movement of people. It’s a demographic shift. We have to train and re-train. We have to re-tool people to take on new jobs,” said Mr. Darville, who also attended the first conference four years ago.

Mr. Darville noted that the importance of numeracy, literacy, soft skills and technology were echoed throughout the conference.

He said the conference was a major achievement for him, pointing to personal and professional growth that allowed him to represent BTVI and The Bahamas on an international stage.
Meanwhile, Mr. Ramtulla said what stood out to him at the conference was the results-driven focus of participants.

“Most of the people there were into research and the consensus from the Caribbean is we need more of these career-oriented training sessions.  We got to hear what is trending and different approaches in the Caribbean,” he stated.

Mr. Ramtulla noted that there was a lot of buzz about BTVI’s Information and Communication Technology (ICT) summer youth program.  The three-year summer program, which was launched in 2018 in partnership with the Ministry of Education and the Office of the Prime Minister, began by training ninth graders in the modules of I.T. Fundamentals, Linux Unhatched, Introduction to Cyber Security, Python, JavaScript, professional performances and ethics.

“We’re taking people from grade nine and at the end of grade 11, they would have sat six international IT certifications and have half of an associate’s degree,” said Mr. Ramtulla.

“At BTVI, we have been using a lot of cloud infrastructure to achieve what we have achieved. We are a gold standard for TestOut because our students have good results. We are training for future jobs – jobs that do not exist as yet. We are heavily on the international standard. In industry, it’s about certifications,” he added.

In 2017 and 2018, BTVI was awarded for excellent international certification exam results from Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) out of 40 testing centres regionally.

BTVI’s President, Dr. Robert W. Robertson, expressed pride in the team that presented at the conference, adding that it is the intention to provide additional training opportunities to ensure all faculty continue to develop their skills and improve the BTVI brand.

Alcohol Treatment Programs for Teens

$

Alcohol abuse is a rampant problem in America. No one is immune. It impacts everyone, including all ethnicities, genders, ages, and social classes. One key predictor of a longer term, adult alcohol problem is teen drinking. Teens who engage in risky binge drinking frequently develop into full-blown alcoholics, or their early habits form patterns for later coping. An adult who relies on alcohol to cope with life may develop a serious addiction. There is hope for this problem. Help is available.

For many years, there have been alcohol treatment centers that catered to teens and the specific issues they face. Enrollment in intensive inpatient programs is often a response to a particularly negative incident with drinking, or may arise from a watchful, mindful parent who rightly senses negative patterns in their son or daughter. Early intervention and treatment is often the key to stemming problems down the road.

The first step towards solving a teenage alcohol problem is to recognize that there is a problem to begin with. Not every parent is ready to come to terms with the fact that drinking is endangering your child’s life. Once you, the parent, have admitted that your teen is a problem drinker, you can open a dialogue with him or her. Perhaps you can arrive at a mutually agreed upon solution. If not, and the problem continues or exacerbates, you can move forward to seeking professional help.  Read more >>

All I Really Need To Know I Learned In Kindergarten

Dear Readers,

There is nothing like the comments, questions or statements of a child that can make you smile or laugh out loud. Yesterday, I had the pleasure of being the guest speaker at a local school to speak on tourism and business subjects. I was having a crazy week, just back from vacation, and I really did not go to the event very prepared. I did not need to worry – I think if I had talked about unicorns coming back to earth - they would have embraced me and participated too.

Grand Bahama Officially Opens World’s First Land-Based Commercial Coral Farm for Reef Restoration!
Coral reefs are dying around the world, with over half being lost since the early seventies. Based on current trends, scientists predict that ninety percent of coral reefs are on track to die by 2050. This ecological tragedy is also a serious socio-economic problem; reefs support one billion people and an estimated 25% of marine life while generating conservatively $30 billion annually through tourism, fisheries, and coastal protection. The Bahamas, who welcome over six million visitors a year to their islands, beaches, and crystal-clear waters has embraced a new dynamic adventure they hope will change this outcome.

Coral Vita is a mission-driven company dedicated to restoring dying reefs, with a vision to create a global network of projects to sustain reefs into the future. They have started by creating the world’s first land-based commercial coral farm for restoration located in Freeport, Grand Bahama.

Gov’t failed to report on threats to human rights defenders
IACHR issues second official request for information on activists facing risk of violence and intimidation in the Bahamas

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) has had to reiterate its request for information from the government regarding threats against the safety of human rights defenders in the Bahamas.

The threats in question were reported to the Commission in December 2016 and early 2017, towards the end of the former PLP administration. They occurred in the face of an order from the IACHR requiring the government to protect five activists from Save The Bays, after it was found that they were “in serious and urgent situation, since their lives and personal integrity face an imminent risk of irreparable harm”.

This workshop is most suited to artists/painters relatively new to oil paint or complete beginners!

Tilting Axis 6 to be hosted at the NAGB in 2020!
The NAGB is thrilled to announce our partnership for Tilting Axis 2020! The roving, pan-Caribbean conference will find itself on Bahamian limestone in a rather significant year. The mission of the late Jackson Burnside III and his wife Pam Burnside, in establishing Doongalik Studios, stated that “by the year 2020 more persons would travel to The Bahamas for its art, culture and heritage rather than for its sun, sand and sea.” With 2020 on the horizon, the question remains - how close are we to reaching this goal not just as a country, but as a region?

This had reduced funding on other public spending priorities, such as the security forces, health, education and social services, the Deputy Prime Minister said.  Read more >>
