Fay Knowles - Writer
I started writing at age nine and now at seventy-five years old, I don’t plan on stopping any time soon! I am delighted to let you know that I have just released my fifth book, “Moonbeams from The Soul: A Collection of Fourteen Provocative Short Stories”, available on Amazon as an e-book and in paperback.

“Moonbeams” is my second book of short stories. The first was “Sunbeams from The Heart: A Collection of Twelve Romantic Short Stories”.

As New York Times bestselling author Neil Gaiman says: “Short stories are tiny windows into other worlds and other minds and other dreams. They are journeys you can make to the far side of the universe and still be back in time for dinner.”

My other published books are “Love at Sunset: A Romantic Suspense” (Book One in my Buchanan Mystery Romance Series); “The Scottish Connection: A Journey Back – Mini-memoir” and a writer’s guide “How to Be the Best Writer Ever”, all available on Amazon.
From wild temptations to dangerous decisions, “Moonbeams from the Soul” is an eclectic assortment of thought-provoking short stories.

As well as writing, I have also been reading some exciting books by Readers’ Favorite International Award-winning Author Tanya R. Taylor that I would love to share with you!

Tanya is a terrific friend, who always encourages me with my writing. She has a long list of books under her belt, but still finds time to design my beautiful book covers and to format the books for publication. It was Tanya, who said to me, when we first met four years ago, that I should turn some of my short stories into a book – and so Sunbeams from the Heart was born!

Tanya’s latest book is “Blind Escape”, Book 2 in her compelling Lucille Pfiffer Mystery Series. Both Book 1 “Blind Sight” and “Blind Escape” became Amazon’s #1 Hot New Releases in their category. I love both of them!

In this new series Lucille Pfiffer sees, but not with her eyes. She lives with her beloved dog Vanilla ("Nilla" for short) in a cozy neighborhood that is quite "active" because of what occurred in the distant past. Though legally blind, she plays an integral role in helping to solve pressing and puzzling mysteries, one right after the other, which, without her, might remain unsolved. The question is: How can she do any of that with such a handicap?
The town of Chadsworth has a new headache on its hand...a puzzling murder for blind Lucille Pfiffer to solve. Will the mystery be unraveled in record time or will the stealthy killer or killers find their way to Lucille's doorstep? Vanilla, once again claims her role as "protector". But Lucille is majorly concerned - not just for her own safety, but for that of her cherished pet.

BLIND JUSTICE, the third book in Tanya’s Lucille Pfiffer Mystery series is currently in the works. And ‘TIL DEATH DO US PART, Book 13 in her popular “Cornelius Saga Series”, which is available on Amazon for pre-order at https://books2read.com/u/m0rrRl, will be released next month.

I am currently working on a new novel “Oleanders End”, which will be my sixth book and Book Two in my Buchanan Mystery Romance Series. With Oleanders End, there are some mysterious deaths and lots of romance!

Books are delicious food for the mind. I hope you get a chance to download or order Moonbeams from the Soul and some of Tanya’s books. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed!
Best wishes,
Fay

SiP 2019 - Introduces the "Faces" behind Short Tales.
Today Meet James Marsh

Story by Dr. Nicolette Bethel
Shakespeare in Paradise is a theatre festival held every October in Nassau, Bahamas. Part of its mission is to develop new works and new talent for Bahamian theatre. Short Tales is its latest project in that endeavour celebrating its second year.
Our series on the Faces of Short Tales, this SiP Festival continues with James Marsh.

Want to hear the story of some disgruntled swimming pigs? Well, James Marsh’s “Pig’s Paradise” is certainly the play for you! We asked him to tell us a little about his “pig-nacious” play and the inspiration behind it, and he said “tourism plays such a huge role in Bahamian life. I wondered what it must be like not just to work in tourism, but to be the attraction itself. Like a swimming pig. Then, what if you didn’t enjoy being a tourist attraction – and you could talk?” He continued, “that’s where my play Pigs’ Paradise came from. It’s about some swimming pigs who are disgruntled with their lot and decide to change their world”

Although it was not always his goal to become a playwright,  James credits the theatre for being a place where one can see a group of creative people bringing your world to life! His love for theatre pushed him to become more involved in all aspects of the art. He says, “I used to work as an actor in the UK, founded small theatre companies, performed at improvised comedy nights, produced plays, wrote sketch shows, directed plays and worked behind the scenes. I stopped for a while when I moved into writing and marketing roles, so it’s great to re-ignite that dramatic fire.” This year, James will be sharing his expertise as the director of Stephen Hanna’s “All Our Monsters”, a featured play in Short Tales 2019. According to James, what he loves about Short Tales concept, “is that the audience can see ten very different plays in a single evening.” He also said, “if you don’t like a particular piece, don’t worry – there’s another one along in a minute!” In his opinion, short ten-minute plays bring much challenges, from condensing the story, to only choosing the pertinent and honing dialogue all while maintaining the pace and personality of the piece. He assured, “it takes a fair bit of rewriting and creating new drafts to get there.

What advice would you give to aspiring playwrights?
We also asked James what advice he would give aspiring playwrights and he urged them to start writing! “It doesn’t matter what you write as long as you get something down on paper or screen but commit to putting something on the page. Don’t worry if you can’t work out how a scene works – just put a note on the page, start the next scene and work your way through to the end to create a first draft. You can figure out the gaps later. The real work is in the next stage – the rewriting. Slowly, draft by draft, you will spiral up towards your finished work. No-one ever gets it right first time!”
If you want to see James Marsh’s play, come see Short Tales 2019 at the Shakespeare in Paradise Theatre Festival!

The rare Bahama nuthatch may have paid the ultimate price in Dorian

The ruins of a neighborhood destroyed by Hurricane Dorian in Sandbank, Abaco, Bahamas, on Sept. 28. (Ramon Espinosa/AP)

By Howard Youth

Howard Youth is senior editor at American Bird Conservancy.

Hurricane Dorian’s catastrophic pass over the northwestern Bahamas leaves us heartbroken for those who lost their lives, family and friends, and homes. It will likely take years for homes, infrastructure and the local economy to be restored. Sadly, some things that have been lost will never be recovered. In the aftermath of this historic storm, we might come to realize that one of those permanent losses includes an unheralded songbird called the Bahama nuthatch. This rare bird species might have paid the ultimate price, extinction, in this disaster, or perhaps even skidded into oblivion just before it due to a hurricane that preceded Dorian.  Read more >>

I typically use this column to introduce the theme of each month’s issue. The copy in your hands has multiple stories about emerging technologies that we hope will give you concrete ideas to apply to your business.

As I write this, however, the boating industry is actively responding to the Hurricane Dorian disaster in the northern Bahamas. This will be old news by the time you’re reading this, but what struck me most about this story — besides Dorian leveling much of the Abacos and devastating thousands of lives — was the response by U.S. boaters and our industry to an event that, technically, wasn’t our problem.

The response was immediate, albeit disjointed. Go Fund Me accounts appeared as soon as it was clear that Dorian would wreak havoc on the northern Bahamas. Flotillas of boat owners in South Florida also planned to head over with relief supplies, hours after Dorian had passed up the Florida coast.  Read more >>

Broker Mario Carey: ‘Golden opportunity’ for entrepreneurs, jobs and boost to economy

By Natario McKenzie

NASSAU, BAHAMAS- An initiative that uses foreclosed properties to meet housing needs for displaced families in the wake of monstrous Category 5 Hurricane Dorian is gaining “incredible momentum”, according to real estate broker Mario Carey.
“We had a group of high net worth individuals on the island this week for a private event hosted by Bahamian businessmen,” Carey said.

“When we mentioned the idea of taking unoccupied residential properties, either single or multi-residential, and converting them into short-term rentals at a reduced rate to provide some form of normalcy for families who lost everything during the storm, every single member of that group of the super successful said they would like to be part of it.

“They recognized it as social entrepreneurship,” he said.

Carey, the founder of the first international franchise of the globally recognized Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate brand, proposes preparing an inventory of all distressed properties in New Providence and populated Family Islands that could support additional children in classrooms or would have the requisite medical facilities available in special cases.  Read more >>

Bahamas struggles to right itself a month after Category 5 Dorian brutalized islands

Children and adults affected by hurricane Dorian
line up at the Thomas Robinson Stadium in Nassau.

Amy Bennett Williams
Fort Myers News-Press

NASSAU, Bahamas – Stooped and heavily laden, Keri Pierre trudged slowly uphill under blazing Bahamian sunshine. She was running out of time. As the days of her free temporary stay at Paradise Island’s Sunrise Beach Club dwindled, Pierre mounted an increasingly frantic search through Nassau for new lodging, food and clothes.

Harrowing as her life has become, her search is a luxury lost to the unidentified dead whose bodies filled a refrigerated semitruck 103 miles to the north in Marsh Harbour, Pierre’s hometown.

Hurricane Dorian left everything inside the pink house she shared with her family smashed or sodden, so a week after the storm, the 23-year-old, her mother, six young siblings and a nephew decamped to the unscathed capital city. Her father, Kelly, stayed behind to guard the ruined homestead.

As her family joined the wave of about 14,000 Dorian-displaced refugees, Pierre was left to figure out how to get the little ones, including a deaf sister with autism, to school and how she might find a job. The Marsh Harbour insurance office where she once worked no longer exists. “I never thought in a million years, I’d be in this situation,” Pierre said as she hauled a black plastic bag of Salvation Army clothes back to the family’s room.  Read more >>

Activist files police complaint over viral death threat.

NASSAU, BAHAMAS —Anti-Haitian sentiments in the country have soared in the aftermath of deadly Hurricane Dorian as widespread devastation and financial loss expose historic prejudices.

Activists, government officials, and hurricane victims have reported worsening ethnic tensions and fears that hate speech on social media could reach a tipping point.

On Monday, outspoken human rights activist Louby Georges filed a complaint with police after he received an expletive-filled voice note detailing an attempt on his life. He told Eyewitness News Online he normally ignores detractors, but immediately reported the voice note due to the emotions amplified by the catastrophic category 5 storm.

Georges, a spokesperson for the newly-formed United Haitian Community, urged the government against pandering to calls for an immigration crackdown against Haitian storm victims as it begged for humanitarian aid on the world stage.  Read more >>

KEVIN WADLOW/Free Press Bahamian residents find refuge in Islamorada after their homes in the Abacos were destroyed by Hurricane Dorian. Mike Forster, left, of Mangrove Mike's Cafe and other Upper Keys residents arranged for Melonie Reckley, Nathilee Forbes and husband Jeffrey Forbes Jr. to stay at an Island Community Church property. See story on page 9A.

By Kevin Wadlow Free Press Staff

ISLAMORADA — “People were coming out of their houses, but there was nowhere to run,” Abacos resident Melonie Reckley described the chaos of destruction wrought by Hurricane Dorian.

“There was so much water. Light poles were down. Houses were flattened to the ground,” said Reckley, a resident of hard-hit Marsh Harbour on Great Abaco.

Reckley, joined by daughter Nathilee Forbes and son-in-law Jeffrey Forbes Jr., have been welcomed into the Islamorada community since the Category 5 hurricane slammed into the Great Abaco and Elbow Cay, along with smaller islands like Green Turtle Cay.

Despite living about a half-mile inland of Marsh Harbour’s shoreline, Reckley and her 11-year-old son were forced to run from their home to three other houses.  Read more >>

SiP 2019 - Introduces the "Faces" behind Short Tales.
Today Meet Selina Archer

Story by Dr. Nicolette Bethel
Shakespeare in Paradise is a theatre festival held every October in Nassau, Bahamas. Part of its mission is to develop new works and new talent for Bahamian theatre. Short Tales is its latest project in that endeavour celebrating its second year.
Our series on the Faces of Short Tales, this SiP Festival continues with Selena Archer.

Without giving too much away, what can you tell us about your play?

When asked, Selina says her play is centered around Jaylia, a survivor of a brutal sexual assault, and her methodical quest to avenge herself. One has to wonder, though, just how far she will go as she seeks the ultimate punishment for her attacker.

Was it always your goal to be a playwright?

Selina confessed that she has always loved writing “in any form”, including plays, because it allows her “to take a journey with my imagination.” Hence, she is grateful that SIP/Short Tales provides the opportunity for her to practice her craft and hone her skills as a playwright.

Have you been involved in other aspects of theatre?

Selina has been actively involved in the Bahamian theatre scene for some time. For her, The Dundas has always been a second home; at eight years old, she was in the first production of Dis We Tings, along with some of her theatre icons, the late Vivica Watkins and the vivacious Cookie. She was also a part of an improv troupe, The Spot, and acted in some local film productions.

Why Short Tales?

Selina says that, at first, Short Tales was a “leap of faith”, as she wanted to know if her work was worthy of production. This time around, however, she says that it is about contributing to the local arts community, and elevating the perception of what we are capable of.

In your opinion, is writing a short play easier or more difficult than writing a full length work?

When questioned about length, Selina contends that both long and short works can be challenging. While the longer works give her more creative freedom to roam, they sometimes never fully come to fruition. The short plays present the challenge of having to be just as impactful as longer works, but with deadline and length constraints.

Give us one word to describe your play
Unexpected!
What advice would you give to aspiring playwrights?

Selina left these succinct and inspiring words for those want to be playwrights: “Don’t aspire. Be!”

If you want to see Selina's play, come see Short Tales 2019 at the Shakespeare in Paradise Theatre Festival!

$2500 Raised During Atlanta Junkanoo Group Fundraiser As Bahamian Doctors Share Hurricane Dorian Experiences

Arthia Nixon interviews Atlanta-based Dr. Roland Hamilton, Jr and Dr. Shaneeta Johnson as they shared their stories of being on the ground in the northern Bahamas after Hurricane Dorian at the Atlanta Junkanoo Group’s fundraiser.

Atlanta, Georgia… During a recent Atlanta Junkanoo Group fundraiser that raised over $2,500 for Hurricane Dorian victims, two Atlanta-based Bahamian doctors detailed all they encountered after landing on Abaco and Grand Bahama in the aftermath of the storm.

The event was held at Bahama Breeze in Duluth, Georgia on Sept. 30, 2019 and attracted scores of Bahamians and friends of The Bahamas. In addition to volunteering with the consulate and coming together to raise awareness within the Atlanta area, the AJG will be holding multiple drives to collect more supplies to send to The Bahamas.

Bahamas Consul General to Atlanta, Astra Armbrister-Rolle provided an update as to what her office is doing to ensure the donations reach those in need. She noted that the city of Atlanta has pledged to do what they can, incorporating Grand Bahama and Abaco as sister-cities.

Bahamian doctors in Georgia Dr. Roland Hamilton, Jr and Dr. Shaneeta Johnson are interviewed by Arthia Nixon during a panel discussion as a part of the Atlanta Junkanoo Group’s Hurricane Dorian fundraiser at Bahama Breeze Duluth.

While the evening had its festive moments, complete with a rushout by the Atlanta Junkanoo Group, attendees were enthralled and emotionally moved when Atlanta-based Bahamian journalist Arthia Nixon led a panel discussion, asking Dr. Roland Hamilton, Jr and Dr. Shaneeta Johnson to share their experiences with the deadly storm. Johnson is an Associate Professor at Morehouse School of Medicine and Director of Minimally Invasive, Robotic and Bariatric Surgery while Hamilton is a Neurosurgeon at Northside Hospital.

Hamilton’s brother and sister-in-law were stationed as doctors in Marsh Harbor, Abaco when Hurricane Dorian hit and acted immediately as truckloads of injured people were brought to them for assistance. Hamilton was in South Carolina at the time and rushed to get to the affected areas as soon as he could, noting that he had to see for himself that his brother was okay. He also shared some slides of his family, in times before and after the storm.

“It was far more than I thought it would be,” he said. “I prayed. I thought of my own family. I thought of other people. I just had to do something and as soon as I was able to go I got there…We’ve had storms but we never had something like this. It is historic. This is going to take generations to recover from.”

Hamilton and his wife Ashley have spearheaded several fundraisers and as AJG members, they have further collected tons of donations to send to The Bahamas.

Star Legg, Bahama Breeze Group Events Coordinator; Dr. Roland Hamilton, Jr; Dr. Shaneeta Johnson; Nadia Fountain, AJC Executive Officer; Dr. Sakib Qureshi, co-sponsor, Atlanta Kashmiri Community and Nona Jones, Bahama Breeze Marketing Manager.

Johnson’s colleagues assisted her with medical supplies and she landed in Grand Bahama within days. She said she was devastated as soon as she landed at what remained of the airport but rushed into action to see where she could help. She described not being able to work from the Rand Memorial Hospital due to flooding and driving through the communities to check the status of survivors.

“There was a woman, her mother and children parked outside of a house that had nothing left but a wall with a scripture on it,” she said. “The woman was so grateful and asked me to check her mother’s blood pressure… And at the gym in Nassau, to see strangers packed so tightly after being evacuated really does something to you. We had to set up there as well. There were so many with needs. One lady stands out in particular - she is far along in her pregnancy and she survived the storm but her six-year-old was killed, and she is homeless. We tried to help her in order to help her baby but the grief and stress is just too much.”
