BTVI Welcomes Dorian Displaced Students to Nassau Campus

The Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI) recently held a luncheon to welcome students displaced by hurricane Dorian to its New Providence campus, where they sat and ate a hearty meal with members of the senior management team including the institution’s chairman and president.

Thirty-five students from the Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute’s (BTVI) Abaco and Grand Bahama campuses recently transferred to its New Providence campus following hurricane Dorian. To officially welcome the students, the institution held a luncheon in their honor where they sat and ate with members of the senior management team including the chairman and president.

Hurricane Dorian left BTVI’s Abaco and Grand Bahama campuses severely damaged which led to classes being suspended. For these students, they relocated solely to finish their studies at BTVI.

Since the moment they entered BTVI’s New Providence campus, they said they have experienced nothing but warm welcomes. In fact, Auto Mechanics’ transfer student, Del-Lamarr Davis indicated that this luncheon with BTVI managers – especially the president – further validates the institution’s ‘Students First’ strategic plan goal.

“I appreciate the fact that since we came everyone has went out of their way to welcome us. We especially appreciate the care packages we’ve received and the personal donations. Dr. Robertson has always been invested in us from we were in Freeport. Being here and having lunch with his team doesn’t feel any different because he always has and still is invested in us,” said Del-Lamarr, who is also President of BTVI’s Student Government Association in Grand Bahama.

Fellow transfer student, Amgia Russell, also expressed her gratitude for receiving such a meaningful welcome.

“I feel greatly appreciative and very welcomed because I really didn’t expect it. I expected for us to be treated like any regular transfer student, but I appreciate the time and effort that was put into this event. It has been a great experience for me and I’m thankful that my presence here means something,” said the Office Assistant student.

During the luncheon, organized by the Student Affairs department, the group received care packages from BTVI, Silvia ‘Bibi’ Borges of Florida National University (FNU) and the entire FNU team.
The group also received t-shirts with the words ‘BTVI Strong.’

President of BTVI's Student Government Association in Grand Bahama, Del-Lamarr Davis, embraces a fellow Freeport native as they are welcomed by BTVI New Providence.

BTVI's Abaco and Grand Bahama students who transferred to our New Providence campus following hurricane Dorian received a warm welcome by way of a luncheon in their honor with BTVI's senior management team.

BTVI's Chairman, Kevin Basden (second from left) sat and had lunch with students displaced by hurricane Dorian.

Seated left to right: BTVI’s Associate Vice President of Fund Development, Alicia Thompson; Silvia ‘Bib’ Borges of Florida National University; BTVI’s President, Dr. Robert W. Robertson and BTVI’s Dean of Student Affairs, Racquel Bethel. At the rear are BTVI Grand Bahama and Abaco transfer students.

Three Bahamians honored for ‘heroic’ storm efforts

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The Office of the Prime Minister yesterday unveiled its National Heros social media campaign honoring three Bahamians for their courageous efforts during the passage of Hurricane Dorian.

Under the theme, “There’s a hero in all of us”, the OPM recounted the experiences of Brent Lowe, and responders Michael Gibson, and Allaya Hagigal.

Lowe, who is visually impaired, saved the life of his disabled son as the monster storm beat his home in Murphy Town, Abaco.

“…The house was just vibrating, humming, the whole house,” said Lowe.

Lowe said he heard a violent banging on the door, and when he opened it he saw his sister-in-law and several of his neighbors begging him to let them in – their roofs had blown off.

It wasn’t long after Lowe opened his home that his own roof started lifting and part of it blew off.

He said water started flowing into the house and they knew they had to evacuate to another building.

Lowe’s 24-year-old son was born with Cerebral Palsy and is unable to walk or talk.

“I had to pick him up, put him on my shoulder to evacuate the house,” Lowe said.

“And when I step on my front porch, the water was to my chin, deep.  Read more >>

Frederick McAlpine Commended for Same-Sex Union and Abortion Remarks

Dear Readers,

This week's Editorial is a piece from Rights Bahamas on MP Frederick McAlpine, who has been commended for same-sex union and abortion remarks.

Rights Bahamas:
Pineridge MP Frederick McAlpine is commended for his enlightened, fair and compassionate remarks regarding same sex unions and abortion laws in the Bahamas. The current situation, in which neither option is legally available, should be denounced by all who truly believe in the concept of individual human rights and freedoms.

His comments represent what is probably the most mature, rational and sensible perspective offered by any Bahamian politician, on any issue, in many years.

NEMA, Grand Bahama Shower Royal Caribbean with thanks in field kitchen send off after 600,000 meals, feeding continues with Cruise Line support of church and homes for the aged kitchens.

There were days when volunteers like Brittany Smith thought the work and the lines would never end, but there was never a moment when she thought of quitting. Smith, a Royal Caribbean crew member was one of more than 1020 people who over a period of more than a month turned out up to 20,000 meals a day in a bustling field kitchen set up and staffed by Royal Caribbean for survivors of Dorian, the catastrophic Cat 5 hurricane that pounded Grand Bahama and Abaco in the northern Bahamas. For Smith, the morning-to-night kitchen duty had double meaning – her family, missing for days, were survivors themselves.
“They were in Abaco,” she said. “And everybody was asking, ‘Did you see them? Have you heard anything?” Finally, after a week had passed, she got the good news, they were alive. And like many of the volunteers, crew members and Royal Caribbean staff who came from Miami headquarters to work in the field kitchen, she radiated goodwill.

Cross Reach Update 13th October

Thanks to the fantastic help from LPC Crossreach supporters, wonderful volunteers from Crisis Response International and of course your food and financial support Crossreach continues to make a difference on GBI.

This last week Crossreach received two forty-foot containers and one trailer delivery of food and supplies. Frequent rain showers hindered offloading pallets, but the last remaining pallet was finally warehoused by Friday evening.
Prime Minister Minnis provides update on Abaco recovery
RV trailers to house critical government workers on the way to Abaco; work started to restore Marsh Harbour port and airport operations
The first batch of 100 RV trailers that will be used to house 300 critical government personnel are on the way to Abaco as part of the effort to rebuild devastated communities following Hurricane Dorian.
The full complement of trailers is expected to arrive in Abaco by the weekend.
The workers will play an essential role in the reconstruction and recovery efforts on the island.
“Government workers will lay the groundwork for the return of residents and the establishment of temporary housing facilities,” said Prime Minister the Most Hon. Dr. Hubert Minnis.
Government Must Respect the UN on Deportations
STATEMENT: Rights Bahamas

Rights Bahamas fully endorses and supports the call of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) to end deportations to Haiti in the wake of Hurricane Dorian.

It is the height of irony that a county newly elected to the UN’s Human Rights Council should have to be dressed down in this embarrassing fashion for its aggressive, inhumane and intolerant behaviour in the face of a humanitarian crisis. We should be working to help all victims of the storm, not heaping further misery on those who are most vulnerable.
Minister Dames Lauds Initiatives ‘Beyond the Prison Walls’
Minister of National Security the Hon. Marvin Dames noted, on October 9, 2019, that his Ministry is the Executing Agency for the Citizen Security and Justice Programme in The Bahamas (CSJP), and, within the programme’s budget, about $17,000,000 had been committed to strengthening crime prevention forces beyond the prison walls.
“As a matter of fact the prison has the smallest budget allocation within this project,” Minister Dames said during the event entitled “Beyond Our Prisoners” at the Baha Mar Convention Centre.
The event also included the launch of the publication “Our Prisoners: A Collection of Papers Arising from a 2016 Survey of Inmates at The Bahamas Department of Correctional Services Facility at Fox Hill”, co-produced with The University of The Bahamas and the Inter-American Development Bank, in collaboration with the Ministry of National Security.
LYNDON INSTITUTE STUDENTS PRESENT CHECK TO ROTARY FOR HURRICANE RELIEF EFFORTS
On Friday, October 4th, Lyndon Institute (LI) Bahamian students and LI administrators presented a check for $3,839.00 to Rotary Club of East Nassau District 7020 Zone 34 President, Francisco “Franny” De Cardenas.

The Lyndon Institute is a comprehensive high school located in Lyndon, Vermont. LI Bahamian students, with help from LI faculty and staff, raised the money through fundraising to benefit relief efforts in the Bahamas following the devastation caused by Hurricane Dorian. Mr. De Cardenas is a resident of the Bahamas and father of Alejandro De Cardenas, one of the students involved in the fundraising.
Central Banks of The Bahamas, Trinidad & Tobago donate to NEMA
Donations continue to flow through The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) towards the relief efforts post Hurricane Dorian.

On Friday, October 11, 2019 NEMA received cheques from the Central Bank of the Bahamas on behalf of its team members, and of the Central Bank of Trinidad and Tobago.
Present were Captain Stephen Russell, Director of NEMA; John Rolle, Governor of the Central Bank of The Bahamas and staff members.

Gevon Moss, Head of Human Resources, Training and Development at the Central Bank shed light on the initiative.
“We firstly want to use this opportunity on behalf of the Central Bank of The Bahamas and all of the team members to thank NEMA for the work that it is doing in the aftermath of Hurricane Dorian.
Youth, Sports and Culture Minister conveys encouragement and hurricane relief funding for GB residents
By Andrew Coakley
FREEPORT, Grand Bahama -- “We’ve all suffered great loss as a result of the passage of Hurricane Dorian, but we who remain have a purpose to serve and that purpose must be served,” said Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, the Hon. Lanisha Rolle, during a recent visit to Grand Bahama.
The Minister joined forces with women of Parliament to bring some hurricane relief funding to the people of Grand Bahama – geared to women of Grand Bahama -- during a special dinner at Churchill Restaurant in Grand Lucayan resort on Saturday, October 12, 2019.
Minister Rolle pointed out that while they know everyone on Grand Bahama has been through an ordeal with Hurricane Dorian, as one who has always had a specific focus on empowering women, she felt compelled to raise the relief funding to assist women of the island.
Letter to the Editor
A local 'failed' politician who postures as a minister of The Gospel, Frederick McAlpine (FNM-Pineridge) had long sought entry into the House of Assembly as a 'representative' from Grand Bahama. He tried to secure a nomination from the PLP, allegedly several times, without success. He then moved over or across to the FNM , no one is sure of which. shortly before the last general elections. To his surprise and that of many others, inclusive of myself, he was elected in the FNM's landslide.
Almost from day one, after being sworn in, this now 'rogue' FNM sought to embarrass the Prime Minister and his administration. He's behave like a loose cannon in the house and on the outside carries on like a natural political jack ass, in my considered view. In almost two and a half years in parliament he's yet to sponsor a single piece to legislation designed to improve the lives of Bahamians in general and his Pineridge constituents in particular. His own constituency association has, apparently, abandoned him in the same manner the good people of the Centreville Constituency Association has jettisoned Chipman.
We are pleased to share a video update from the Bahamian Brewery & Beverage on their plans to rebuild after Hurricane Dorian:

Hurricane Dorian Oil Spill Has Reached Freshwater Resources in the Bahamas

By Yessenia Funes

Nearly 5 million gallons of oil spilled from a Bahamas facility in the wake of Hurricane Dorian. And now advocates have found evidence that the oil from the facility has made its way into nearby wetlands, pine forests, and mangroves.

The Category 5 storm hit Grand Bahama and Abacos Islands last month, home to an Equinor oil facility. The company is still cleaning up the mess left behind at its South Riding Point facility in High Rock, which hugs the southern coast of Grand Bahama. Unfortunately, Equinor’s 250-people crew hasn’t been able to work quickly enough to keep oil from seeping into the environment.  Read more >>

Bahamas rebuilding personal for Ole Miss basketball

Ole Miss basketball player Franco Miller Jr., a native of The Bahamas, helps with the Rebels hurricane relief drive for his native country.

By Parrish Alford Daily Journal

OXFORD • Sammy Hunter has been away from the Bahamas for almost four years. Emotionally he’s never left.

He hopes to return one day and build a life.

A lot of building will have to take place between now and then after the Bahamas were hit hard by Hurricane Dorian on Sept. 1-2.

Hunter, an Ole Miss basketball freshman, watched in horror as the storm lashed out against the island nation initially with Category Five winds.

“I actually have cousins that lost their home. It was pretty bad to watch. When I heard that I was devastated. Knowing I couldn’t help was bad for me. Hopefully next time I’ll be there to help,” Hunter said.

The storm became personal for Ole Miss basketball, both men’s and women’s, which have a strong Bahamas influence.  Read more >>

A JUDGE yesterday lamented that court fines do not seem to be a deterrent to illegal immigration and were “making things worse”, adding undocumented migrants will “go to jail for a longer time” if they keep coming to her court.

The comments came from Senior Magistrate Carolyn Vogt-Evans after she sentenced several undocumented migrants to prison for immigration offenses.  Read more >>

Mass Shelter – Humanitarian Support Proposal

$

Introduction & Background

The immense work done by the Government of the Bahamas in these difficult times must be commended. The humanitarian community aims to support the Government in building upon this work as the Hurricane Dorian response shifts from immediate emergency to mid-term displacement. Displacement and hosting of evacuees for an extended period of time, is something that may be an abnormal situation for the Bahamas but is unfortunately not new to many countries around the world. The humanitarian community currently present in the Bahamas thus wishes to offer support in the form of both activities and technical advice that draws upon lessons learned from other emergencies globally that have resulted in longer term displacement. This document serves to summarize key areas in which UN, NGOs, and INGOs can support the Government in this new phase.  Read more >>

Stress affects everyone at some point in their lives and can be caused by a wide range of factors and events and is commonplace in society today.  Stress is increasingly becoming an issue in today’s society as more and more people are coming under mounting pressures at work, at home and in their social lives. The UK’s Health and Safety Executives research showed that in the UK alone, 105 million work days are lost to stress each year.

No matter how old, young, healthy, intelligent or mature, stress can affect anyone.

Our Free Online Stress Test is sensitive to levels of chronic non-specific arousal. It assesses difficulty relaxing, nervous arousal, and being easily upset/agitated, irritable/over-reactive and impatient.  The test was developed by medical professionals and is designed to meet the scientific requirements of both researchers and professional clinicians and is suitable for both adolescents and adults.  Take the test >>
