BAHAMAS Union of Teachers president Belinda Wilson said “heads should roll” due to the “perennial” shortage of teachers, adding more than 100 teachers are still waiting to be placed in schools by the Ministry of Education since the 2019-2020 school year started.

“Teachers are needed, and they are needed now. Some heads should roll because this is a perennial problem,” said Mrs Wilson.

Over 90 percent of these teachers who graduated from the University of the Bahamas had government scholarships and, according to Mrs Wilson, by now these teachers should have been allocated to schools.  Read more >>

Atlanta Gospel Artist Obie One B.A. Delivers Items To Grand Bahamas Hurricane Dorian Victims

Atlanta, Georgia… After seeing how Bahamians in Grand Bahama are still in desperate need months after Hurricane Dorian, Atlanta-based gospel recording artist Obie One B.A. went to the island to personally distribute items to those trying to rebuild their lives.

The artist, whose real name is Obafemi Hawk, also helped in the wake of Hurricane Matthew. Through his businesses in the Atlanta area, family, friends and strangers, he was able to gather supplies in short order. With his mother and friends, he made a trip to Grand Bahama to ensure the items got into the hands of those who needed it most.

Once on the ground in Grand Bahama, Obie One B.A. met with Pastor Ken Strachan of Seed Sowing Ministries who received the bulk of the items to distribute to the community and went to see some of the devastation on the island first hand.

“Yes, people on the ground have gotten some help but it is going to take decades for some to rebound as the needs are ongoing,” said Obie One B.A. “You have to consider people lost their homes, business, schools, communities and tragically, some even lost loved ones. We are beyond grateful to all the Atlantans who came through to assist and wanted to show them where their contributions went. It was a true blessing to go door to door, neighborhood to neighborhood, church to church, and person to person to give blankets, toiletries, clothes, water, etc. The need was so prevalent and the looks of thanks on everyone’s face was priceless when they received.”

Obie One B.A.’s mother, Lisa Hall-Hawk said she was emotionally taken aback to see parts of the island she visited many times in ruin.

“It looked like something from out of an apocalypse movie,” she says. “To know that people worked hard and lost everything - their businesses, their homes, their lives - it really was a lot to take in. But they were grateful that we were there and happy we even thought of them to help because the road to recovery is going to take years and years.”

Obie One B.A. said he plans to continue raising awareness and will take another trip in the near future.

The Resorts at Atlantis Paradise Island in The Bahamas, Explained

 By Bob Curley

It’s still common to think of the Atlantis Paradise Island resort in the Bahamas as a single entity, with its iconic twin towers connected by a soaring arch and surrounded by a sprawling, lost-world themed waterpark, Aquaventure, complete with waterslides emerging from a stepped pyramid and plunging riders through an aquarium tank full of toothy sharks.

That part of the resort, now called the Royal hotel, still stands at the center of the property, but over the years the Paradise Island has expanded to include six distinct resort properties, all occupying hundreds of acres of prime beachfront and complemented by an ever growing array of activities and amenities, including a casino, marina, golf, and animal-encounter programs.

Each resort has its own unique character, with more than 3,800 guest rooms aimed at appealing to nearly every type of Nassau-bound traveler:  Read more >>

Polantra Media President Trevor Davis

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The 2020 Bahamas Carnival Experience, which is set to take place on May 1 – 3, will reintroduce the songwriting and music masters competition for Bahamian artists.

Organizers of the weekend long festival – Polantra Media Group and the Bahamas Carnival Band Owners Association (BCBOA) made the announcement during a press conference at the Thomas A. Robinson Stadium yesterday.

“We’re changing the way people envision playing mas at Bahamas Carnival,” said Tevor Davis, president of Polantra Media.

“We’re giving it a festival feel. We want as soon as people walk into the stadium, they feel it.

“We’re going to have music playing all day, whether it be from the bands or the artists of the stage.

“In addition, those playing mas will have an actual stage to cross for the first time at Bahamas Carnival.

“This is where the judging will happen and where revelers will be able to give their all just as they would do in any other carnival.

The concert series will be hosted at the stadium. However, organizers were unable to indicate which artists will be performing and headlining the show.  Read more >>

On Faith: The Bahamas 2020 missions trip

Part of my heart is in The Bahamas.

By Pastor Jim Joseph, Living Waters Fellowship

This past week, I had the privilege of leading a team of students and adults on a short-term missions outreach to Nassau, The Bahamas.

We had the opportunity to partner with Progress Academy, a small Christian school there. We also had opportunities to meet the needs of survivors of Hurricane Dorian, which devastated the islands of Grand Bahama and Abaco. We prayed and played, laughed and cried, worked and rested. It was a glorious week, and we hope to return again next year.

The Bahamas is a study in contrast. Down by the waterfront where the cruise ships dock, it is a different world. It is a glorious screensaver photo that is so terribly unreal for the majority of the people who live there. It is not common for both parents to work — sometimes two jobs each — just to put food on the table and pay the rent.  Read more >>

Their director says his kids embody the spirit of hope for the Bahamas after Hurricane Dorian passed through and devastated the Islands.

TAMPA, Fla. — On a day to remember Martin Luther King's legacy, a band from miles away is bringing their passion for music to the community.

"This year we're going to make history as the first Bahamian band to perform for the MLK parade," Band Director Anthony Carpon said.

Carpon and his kids flew into Tampa a few days before their performance. The band's staff and some parents are here with the kids during this life-changing opportunity.  Read more >>

Sea Level Rise Threat To 15% Of Bahamas' Gdp

The Bahamas is among the top four nations forecast to be hit hardest by rising sea levels, a rating agency warned yesterday, with up to 15 percent of annual GDP and 11 percent of its people in peril.

Moody’s, unveiling an assessment about the long-term threat to sovereign creditworthiness posed by climate change, drew on multiple studies to identify The Bahamas - as well as Vietnam, Egypt and Suriname - as the four countries most threatened by rising sea levels resulting from global warming.

Describing the outlook as a “material credit risk”, Moody’s also voiced concern that The Bahamas’ efforts to combat sea level rise “lack co-ordination” among government institutions and are made more complicated because much coastal, low-lying land is in the hands of private owners such as major resorts.  Read more >>

Greetings!

Although we're well into January now, I would still like to wish you Happy New Year! I hope it will be a very happy, peaceful and healthy year for you.

For those of you who don't know, the Government of The Bahamas has just banned single use plastic! And they are eliminating our "penny" (one cent) very soon. So a lot of things are happening here in our little country!
Abaco and parts of Grand Bahama, which were devastated by Hurricane Dorian last September, haven't fully recovered yet. Tragically, there are still many  missing persons and unbelievably some evacuees are still living in shelters here in Nassau. I can't imagine what kind of life that must be for them. Of course, many of those islanders have lost their employment as well as their homes. Some couldn't afford hurricane insurance on their properties, so they don't have the money to rebuild. However, the Bahamas Government, as well as local and international organizations continue to help in any way they can. It will be a long road.

On a more cheerful note, my romantic suspense novel DANGEROUS DEVOTION (formerly "Love at Sunset"), Book One in my Buchanan Mystery Romance Series, is now on sale for only 99 cents (or your country's equivalent)!  Limited time only.

"If your relationship was threatened, what lengths would you go to in order to save it?"The title "Dangerous Devotion" reflects not only the moving romance and gripping suspense of the book, but also the deadly peril, emotional drama and intrigue throughout. And coming soon Book Two in this exciting series - "Deadly Deceit"!

BLIND SIGHT by Bestselling and Award Winning Bahamian author Tanya R. Taylor is also available for a limited time only at 99 cents!
ABOUT BLIND SIGHT:“Lucille Pfiffer sees, but not with her eyes. She lives with her beloved dog Vanilla (‘Nilla’ for short) in a cozy neighborhood that is quite ‘active’ due to what occurred in the distant past. Though totally blind, she plays an integral role in helping to solve pressing and puzzling mysteries, one right after the other, which, without her, might remain unsolved. The question is: How can she do any of that with such a handicap?”

Blind Sight appeared as Amazon’s #1 Hot New Release in its category the very first day after it was made available to pre-order!

The author says she never thought when she introduced a four legged character in “Blind Sight” (Book One in her Lucille Pfiffer Mystery Series) that within a very short space of time she and her family would have a dog of their own. She says: “We got Nilla at six weeks old from a lady whose Shih Tzu and Poodle just had a litter of pups.” Tanya’s daughter Mercedes named their pooch Vanilla (“Nilla” for short).

Tanya remembers the day she and her family brought her home. “She immediately stole our hearts. I couldn't help but have her star in my mystery series with Lucille Pfiffer.”

She says when she started writing “Blind Sight” she really didn’t know anything about dogs, but “I knew I just had to have a dog in the book!” She thought she would have to do a lot of research on “man’s best friend”, but she says: “Since adopting our puppy Nilla I have learned so much about dogs that I didn’t need to do any doggy research for the book after all. And Nilla has taught and inspired me so much!”

After you read "Blind Sight", be sure to read "Blind Escape", Book Two in Tanya's Lucille Pfiffer series! I have a copy of both and just loved them! Tanya is already working on Book Three in the series.
