Atlanta Carnival Brings Caribbean Culture To Black History Month Parade

for Atlanta Caribbean Carnival Bandleaders Association

(Atlanta, Georgia)… This year’s Black History Month parade got a taste of the islands when the Atlanta Caribbean Carnival Bandleaders Association (ACCBA) took to the streets with masquerader and stilt walkers dressed in colorful costumes to celebrate their diverse culture.

Parade participants included Georgia pageant royalty, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, NAACP, Atlanta Falcons and representatives from other well known organizations.

It was a wonderful event that celebrated Black History Month, how far we have come over the years and the strides we continue to take as a people,” said ACCBA president, Patricia Henry. “Carnival has become a part of Atlanta’s mix because of what we bring to the city on Memorial Day weekend. Yes, Atlanta is known for its civil rights connections and of course, being the birthplace of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., but it’s also now known as a diverse city, and our presence here shows that. Carnival and its other counterparts in the Caribbean were birthed by slaves who celebrated various events such as a good crop. So when you consider that, we certainly do have a place here in the Black History Parade because we are a part of Black history.”

Henry further stated that ACCBA is gearing up for its event in May and has already confirmed several sponsors and participants. For more information on #AtlCarnival visit www.atlantacarnival.org.

BTVI's Solar Energy Course Underway

SOLAR ENERGY – BTVI has recommenced its solar energy program which will be held over a 27-week period with 270 contact hours.  Shown here is one of the instructors, Dean of Construction Trades, Alexander Darville.

With the mounting costs of electricity bills and the alternative of conserving energy, The Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI) has officially recommenced its solar energy program.

The renewable energy program was recently reintroduced after an initial offering in 2009 to train a cadre of persons to become skilled solar energy technicians.

BTVI’s Dean of Construction Trades, Alexander Darville, noted that it is a comprehensive 27-week program with 270 contact hours.  He emphasized that now is the time to take advantage of an industry that is emerging in The Bahamas today, but will advance in the near future.

“Solar will take off. There will be a demand for these trained individuals. Those joining the program will have a jumpstart on the industry.  They will be trained to maintain these solar systems.  For example, The Bahamas Agricultural and Industrial Institute (BAIC) is about to install a 35 kilowatt system. That’s a job for someone to maintain beyond their staff.  That’s only one example,” he stated.

He added that with residential solar systems as far as the Abacos and the Exumas, more people will see the need to have local contacts for maintaining those systems. “Instead of them flying someone in on a work permit, BTVI will have a pool of solar energy technicians to do it. We understand the importance of conserving energy and cutting costs,” he stated.

Solar is expected to help businesses and homeowners to meet part of their energy needs at a lower cost as it can be converted into electricity via solar thermal energy and photovoltaic (PV) panels.

“With Value Added Tax (VAT) coming on board, it will affect how much energy you consume and solar is an alternative means for energy,” noted Mr. Darville who is also one of the program instructors.
EMERGING INDUSTRY – BTVI’s solar energy program is underway in an effort to train a cadre of persons in the field.   Shown here is Technical Supervisor Manager and instructor, Wellington Bain.

Furthermore, BTVI has purchased three pieces of solar equipment and instructors have already been trained by Mechanical Engineer from Hampden Engineering Corporation in Massachusetts, Bryan Methe.   BTVI’s instructors were initially trained at Solar Energy International in Colorado.

The equipment arrived at the BTVI campus unwired, and purposely so that students could learn and practice the wiring, operation and layout.  They will become knowledgeable on where to place solar panels, the amount of sunlight needed to power them and differentiate between using them as stand-alone energy sources and tying them to an electrical grid.

Meanwhile, one of the key components of BTVI’s program is the roofing.  “Students will be exposed and get an understanding of how to install the system into the roof,” said Mr. Darville.

And for those who still have an element of skepticism about solar energy, Mr. Darville said besides being more environmentally friendly, it is worth the investment as going green is cheaper in the long run.

“With the cost of fuel, what the fuel is doing to the environment and the availability of sun, solar is the way to go,” he stated.

BTVI Continues to Attract Top Performers

Lamaron Sweeting received the best results in the 2013 Electrical Installation BGCSE examination and will begin studies at BTVI in a few weeks.

The two highest performing candidates in the 2013 Electrical Installation and Carpentry national exams are seeking to expand their knowledge and hone their skills at The Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI).

Lamaron Sweeting, a 2013 graduate of South Andros High was recognized by the government during its annual national examination awards, as having achieved the best results in the Bahamas General Certificate of Secondary Education (BGCSE) Electrical Installation exam.   Oscar Saunders, formerly of Nassau Christian Academy, topped all other candidates nationwide in Carpentry.

Lamaron recently collected his acceptance letter to BTVI and is excited to begin his studies towards an Associate of Applied Science degree in Electrical Installation when summer classes begin on April 28th.

“It is important for me to attend BTVI to further my hands-on skills and to apply it to the world of work,” said the 17-year-old.

During his three-year study of Electrical Installation, under the tutelage of Errol Coke, Lamaron obtained many skills and is able to install receptacles, switches and breakers.  He stated that he enjoys manual work and Electrical Installation became his favourite subject.

“I understand it and am able to apply it easily,” said the young man who wants to become an Electrical Engineer.  “The passion I have for the work makes me feel I’m doing it for fun.  Time doesn’t matter; at the end of the day, I can see what I’ve done,” he added.

Oscar Saunders, a student of BTVI, received the best results in the 2013 BGCSE carpentry exam

Meanwhile, Oscar has already been enrolled at BTVI for two semesters and although he is learning the intricacies of Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) he stated that carpentry comes natural to him.

“I like things that can be done with the wood – the many possibilities.  I make art out of wood,” said the 19-year-old who has built a computer desk, towel rack, wine rack and car speaker box.

Questioned as to how he achieved the best national results in carpentry, Oscar gave credit to his teacher Carl Curry, but also said, “I put in a little extra than the other guys.  It makes a difference.”

He also offered advice for the 2014 candidates: “Help others who are doing the exam.  You learn in the process. The more you do it, the better you get at it.”

BTVI’s Dean of Construction Trades, Alexander Darville said it is an honour to have Oscar at BTVI and Lamaron starting in a few weeks.  “It shows how students see BTVI.  We are attracting top students from the technical areas,” he stated.

Mr. Darville added that for many high school students, technical education is a first choice.  “We live in a technical world and BTVI is literally preparing its students for the world of work,” he said.
