US agents have raided fashion executive Peter Nygard's Manhattan offices as part of a sex-trafficking investigation.

The FBI and New York police executed a search warrant on Tuesday, a spokesman for the US Attorney's Office said.

The raid comes as Mr Nygard, 77, is facing a sexual assault and trafficking lawsuit, filed by 10 women and girls earlier this month.

He has denied allegations of wrongdoing.

The Finnish-Canadian multimillionaire, who has been linked to Prince Andrew, has been the subject of an investigation by the child exploitation FBI task force and New York police for the last five months.

He was reportedly the subject of a previous FBI investigation for sex trafficking in 2015 and 2017.  Read more >>

Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis inside the House of Assembly yesterday. RACARDO THOMAS

By Rachel Knowles

Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis yesterday announced that a strike force will be established to aggressively pursue illegal migrants in The Bahamas as he declared it is time to “take our country back”.

“We must strengthen and enforce our immigration policies,” said Minnis, as he closed debate on the mid-year budget in Parliament.

“We must pursue illegal immigrants aggressively. This is The Bahamas and Bahamians are first, and Bahamians will and must remain first.

“I have given the minister with responsibility for immigration the task of establishing a strike force whose mandate would be to aggressively pursue illegals, both throughout New Providence and the Family Islands, through our streets and at various job sites.”

Minnis added, “Mr. Speaker, we can no longer be second class citizens in our own country. We must take our country back.  Read more >>

Here are the practical steps you can take to prepare for a potential outbreak near you.

By Korin Miller
  • Health officials announced that the American public should “prepare” for an outbreak of coronavirus, a.k.a. COVID-19, in the U.S.
  • “Disruptions to everyday life may be severe, but people might want to start thinking about that now,” the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.
  • Doctors explain the practical steps you can take to prepare for a potential coronavirus outbreak in your local community.

Health officials announced Tuesday that the American public should “prepare” for an outbreak of coronavirus in the U.S.—a big change on how they’ve spoken about the virus, known as COVID-19, in the past.

“It’s not so much of a question of if this will happen in this country anymore, but a question of when this will happen,” Nancy Messonnier, M.D., director of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, said, per the New York Times.  Read more >>

I cannot believe how difficult that story must have been for those actors to tell. The play ... had me angry, it had me furious, it had me thinking more than anything, and it had me focussed. It made me ask what I could do to help."

"Official reports say that on July 10, 1990 the Bahamas Defense Force vessel, Yellow Elder, intercepted a Haitian sloop and began to tow it into Blackpoint, Exuma. Reports say the vessel capsized when the refugees panicked because the towline came free and the boat dipped. Thirty-nine Haitians were buried in a mass grave on Bitter Guana Cay, an uninhabited island. There were sixty-nine survivors. A coroner's inquest was held in August of that year but none of the Haitian survivors testified at the hearings because they had been repatriated. The rumors on the streets and the confidential testimony of eyewitnesses cntracidts the newspaper reports and the Inquest's findings.

Many more people are said to have died. There is said to be another gravesite. People are said to have been eaten by sharks: men, women and children. Among the rumors are claims that some of the mutilated bodies that were hidden from the public washed into the sea when they were first buried because they were placed too near the shoreline. Some Defense Force officers are said to have suffered serious emotional and psychological distress after this event."

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL, February 20, 2020 – The Islands Of The Bahamas used the international stage of the recent Food Network & Cooking Channel South Beach Wine & Food Festival presented by Capital One (SOBEWFF®), to say thank you to Chef José Andrés.  The legendary Chef and his team were responsible for providing some 3.2 million meals to victims of Hurricane Dorian, which struck the island nation in September of 2019 and caused massive destruction and devastation to Great Abaco, and Grand Bahama.

The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism and Aviation presented the humanitarian with a portrait of himself, by world renowned Bahamian artist, Jamaal Rolle, on Thursday night at the SOBEWFF® event, Feeding the World presented by Open Table and hosted by Chef Andrés.

“Our country is forever in your debt for your limitless love, kindness, thoughtfulness and support demonstrated in the massive outreach you organized to feed thousands affected by the storm,”  The Ministry’s Executive Director of Marketing, Mrs. Bridgette King, said while presenting the gift to Chef Andrés.

The well-attended walk-around tasting event was one of a number of events at SOBEWFF® that featured a lineup of more than 100 events. Why do we hate Foreigners so much?

My grandmother and I am sure many other grandmas always used to say to me when I was growing up…don’t get "painted with the same brush”... warning me about associating with people who didn't have very good reputations. This statement about watching one’s character now seems to be the position that many Bahamians have taken in recent years. While we say we want to embrace people of all races and cultures, there’s definitely an underlying current of xenophobia that has painted all FOREIGNERS with the same brush. But is ‘foreign’ all bad?
MOU teaching services agreement signed between Bahamas and Cuban governments

NASSAU, The Bahamas – Approximately 60 teachers are expected to be engaged by the Bahamas Government as a result of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between the Ministry of Education and the Cuban Government to provide services in the subjects of agricultural science, biology/chemistry, electrical installation, auto mechanics, mathematics, Spanish and French.

The MOU, signed February 21, 2020 by Cuban Ambassador Alejandro Garcia del Toro and the Hon. Jeffrey Lloyd, the Minister of Education, augments a teaching services agreement between The Bahamas Government and the Government of Cuba.

Minister Lloyd said it is an honor and privilege to have Cuba assist The Bahamas in augmenting its teaching cohort particularly in the area of specialist teachers.

“Cuba has been a friend of The Bahamas and we have collaborated intimately with that country in the provision of educational resources to our country,” said Minister Lloyd.

He expressed “deep” gratitude to the government of Cuba, particularly the Ministry of Education, to be able to continue the 17-year-old relationship by signing an extension of the collaboration through the MOU.
AG Carl Bethel Says, FATF Granting of On-Site Visit is First Step in Exit Process from FATF Gray List

Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, the Hon. Carl Bethel led a Bahamian delegation to represent The Bahamas at the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) Plenary session in Paris this week, during which he addressed the task force.

The FATF has made the initial determination that The Bahamas has substantially completed its action plan, and merits an on-site assessment to verify strengthening of the effectiveness of its AML/CFT regime.

The Attorney General stated today: “The granting of an on-site visit is the first step in the exit process from the FATF Gray List. It is critically important that The Bahamas showed measurable and sustained progress in addressing the deficiencies in our anti-money laundering and counter terrorism financing regime, as well as in our combatting all identified risks offences.”

He congratulates all the regulatory agencies and the financial services sector upon their achievements to date in addressing perceived deficiencies. He urges all stakeholders to redouble their efforts to attain and maintain the highest standards of compliance and sound business management. He said, it is important that all stakeholders, financial institutions and designated non-financial businesses and professionals continue to adhere to the new standards and laws and that regulatory agencies continue to improve in their prudential oversight of the financial services.

How Safe Are Gated Communities? Tactical PI’s Elston Bain Claims Eyes are Still Best Defense

Sixteen-year Royal Bahamas Police Force veteran, now CEO of a private security company, Elston Bain urged Nassau residents to step up personal vigilance, minimize risk and be aware of their surroundings.

Bain’s comments followed a rash of break-ins in gated communities throughout New Providence. Incidents have been reported in normally quiet and even exclusive neighbourhoods packed with amenities from east to west and as far south as Coral Harbour.

“Living in a gated community definitely adds a sense of security and comfort, particularly for families with young children who feel their young ones are safer playing outside, but those security gates are no guarantee against the criminal or criminals determined to do harm,” said Bain. “It is a sad state of affairs but when you combine certain factors including a breakdown in the social fabric and high youth unemployment, property crimes increase. As the fear of crime escalates, security gates at entry points of a community and security cameras that capture activity around a residence become less of a luxury and more of a standard expectation. They are all integral to a sense of security yet the single best weapon in anyone’s arsenal of personal protection is still utilization of your senses, including common sense. First, always be aware of your surroundings, almost as if you had to take notes on it. Be alert and watch activity around you. Heed the advice of law enforcement. It may sound boring and old, but no tool has ever compared to your own two eyes.”
Department of Education holds Professional Development Workshops for Family and Consumer Science Educators

NASSAU, The Bahamas – Interpersonal and communication skills and preparation for certifications and internships are among the essentials that teachers must impress upon students in Family and Consumer Science said Keyshan Bastian, Assistant Director of Education, Career and Technical Education Section.

“Your degree does not make you qualified. Your experience speaks to what you are able to do and the lifelong field that you develop. It doesn’t matter if you have a Masters’ Degree or PH.D. If you’ve never been in industry, you’re still coming in as a junior,” said Mrs. Bastian.

“If they’re coming in to make beds, let them spend a day making beds. If they’re coming in to work the front office, let them spend a day working front of office.”

Mrs. Bastian was among a panel of industry professionals who participated in a discussion during Family and Consumer Science Education Unit Spring 2020 Professional Development Workshop put on by the Department of Education for public and private junior and senior high school teachers. The theme for the workshop was ‘Curriculum Implementation: Transitioning Students from School to Work and Beyond’.

    I Corinthians 15:1-11

Several years ago I had the opportunity to take some graduate courses in philosophy from Harvard University. Harvard has long been known for its intelligent and inquisitive student body, and those in the class I took were no different. As we looked at a variety of subjects from epistemology to metaphysics, they asked a lot of questions and received some good answers.

College students are a special breed. They have a hard time taking things at face value. They don’t believe things just because someone in authority told them it is so. They want to find out for themselves. I guess it’s all part of growing up and figuring things out for yourself.

Big Bahamas Margaritaville Resort in Peril? Depends on Whom You Ask

An existing Margaritaville restaurant and lounge in the Bahamas disputes plans to use the Margaritaville name on a new resort complex in Nassau.

There’s a chance a much-anticipated Margaritaville-branded resort and entertainment complex in the Bahamas might have to pick a new name and skip the decor evoking Jimmy Buffett’s hit song, attorneys say.

The 6-acre Pointe residential, hotel, marina, restaurant and bar development to be finished this year in Nassau is set to include a Margaritaville Beach Resort and One Particular Harbour condominium, named after another Buffett song.

This doesn’t sit well with the owner of an existing Margaritaville restaurant, store and bar with live entertainment on Paradise Island, who accused Margaritaville of breaching their 2014 exclusive trademark use agreement by licensing the name to the nearby Nassau complex.  Read more >>

Ex-Ag Slams 'Absurdity' Of Financial Crime Listing

    By NEIL HARTNELL
    Tribune Business Editor
    nhartnell@tribunemedia.net

An ex-attorney general has slammed the “absurdity” of the criteria that will determine whether The Bahamas should be removed from an anti-financial crime monitoring list.

Alfred Sears, pictured, said the Financial Action Task Force’s (FATF) assertion - that it needs to assess whether this nation has “sufficient political will” to sustain reforms to its anti-money laundering and counter terror financing regime - introduces “subjective” and “unverifiable” mechanisms into The Bahamas’ efforts to escape its surveillance.

Questioning whether such standards would be applied to the likes of the US, Canada and the European nations, Mr Sears argued that the new laws, strengthened regulatory bodies and increased investigations/prosecutions of financial crime resulting from The Bahamas’ implementation of the October 2018 “action plan” agreed with the FATF should be evidence aplenty of “political will”.

While there was “no question” that The Bahamas needed to escape the FATF’s monitoring list, given the negative impact for its international financial centre and trade model, the former attorney general said the assessment criteria further highlighted the need for all global anti-financial crime initiatives to be placed under the United Nations (UN) supervision.  Read more >>

The United States is starting to increase its funding for virus preparedness. American media reported the Trump administration was seeking $2.5 billion from Congress to prepare for a possible nationwide outbreak, while the Senate Democrats have made a request for $8.5 billion.

When asked about local funding to fight the virus, Dr Sands said: “I think we’ve asked for a million dollars.”
