The Sir Victor Sassoon (Bahamas) Heart Foundation and The Heart Ball Committee announced that nominations were being accepted for the 50th Lady Sassoon Golden Heart Award. The deadline for nominations has been extended to Friday, January 23rd, 2015.

The Lady Sassoon Golden Heart Award was initiated by The Heart Foundation to applaud and give recognition to individuals who have selflessly given of themselves, to promote human welfare and dignity, thus making life better for their fellow men. Oftentimes, these individuals go unrecognized by the wider community for their efforts; they don’t ask for anything in return for their generosity. In most cases, they go beyond the call of duty, working outside of their normal scope of work, to impact our nation’s social, educational, health and economic systems.

The 50th Lady Sassoon Golden Heart Award will be presented at the 51st Annual Heart Ball. Under the patronage of Her Excellency Dame Marguerite Pindling, Governor General, and The Right Honourable Perry Gladstone Christie, Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, and Mrs. Bernadette Christie, the 2014 / 2015 Heart Ball Committee will host the 51st Annual Heart Ball on Saturday, February 14, 2015. The Annual Heart Ball is the major fund-raiser to aid The Sir Victor Sassoon (Bahamas) Heart Foundation. The funds raised from this event help to repair the hearts of children, who can not ordinarily afford heart care. The theme for this Ball is, “Affairs of the Heart….Sustaining Heart Beats, One at a Time”.  The public is encouraged to help to repair a child’s heart, while spending Valentine’s with family and friends at the Annual Heart Ball.

One of the highlights of the evening is the presentation of the Lady Sassoon Golden Heart Award. Additionally, guests can look forward to an evening filled with love, laughter, fine foods, dancing, prizes and surprises. There will be live band and orchestral performances by the S-G Band and The RBDF Dance Band. Guests can conclude the evening by dancing to special music by Gary “Super” Johnson.

The public can submit nominations, to be accompanied by a letter or statement explaining why the person recommended should receive the award. Nominations are to be submitted to:

The Golden Heart Award Committee
P. O. Box N-8189
Nassau, The Bahamas

Alternatively, submissions can be hand delivered to Grosham Property, EVES, Cable Beach. This is the office site for The Sir Victor Sassoon (Bahamas) Heart Foundation.

The Deadline for nominations is Friday, January 23rd, 2015.

(Oklahoma City, Oklahoma)... Bahamas Consul General Randy E. Rolle is already planning on making another trip to Oklahoma to visit with Bahamians he did not have the opportunity to meet on his first diplomatic trip to the state. Even though Rolle’s office is based in Atlanta, he represents Bahamians in over 10 states, including Oklahoma and those neighboring Georgia.

“I am so proud of the way Bahamians are representing us in the state of Oklahoma,” Rolle beamed. “I met with some students who are eager to graduate and share their skills with the nation, with those who are residents doing extremely well in their professions, and even a former student now a youth minister with a thriving ministry.”

“I have to thank our team who did a tremendous job getting the word out prior to our visit and being there to register Bahamians with our office once we arrived in Oklahoma,” said Rolle. “Many Bahamians did not know the Atlanta office represented Oklahoma and those we met expressed that they felt we made the effort to show how much we care by physically meeting with them and encouraging them to be in constant communication with us.”

Having already secured opportunities for Bahamians wishing to study in Atlanta, Rolle also had the opportunity to meet with executives at the University of Central Oklahoma to discuss potential alliances. The Bahamas Consul General was greeted to the UCO campus by Office of Global Affairs representatives Dennis Dunham, Ph.D Executive Director and Aaron Wheelbarger, Senior Advisor, International Admissions.

“I’m most excited about the potential partnership,” said Rolle of his meeting with the team. “Already, Bahamians have made their mark at this institution and we would love for that trend to continue. Overall though, this has been a successful trip and I am most excited to return in short order.”

(Atlanta, Georgia)... When Black History Month 2015 rolls in, a young Caribbean entertainment enthusiast says he will have greater appreciation for the American Civil Rights Movement after working on the set of the film Selma.

Bahamas-born Damario Major had the chance to play a civil rights marcher for a few days while working on the poignant film that retells the story of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr and the Freedom March in Selma, Alabama. He says dressing in the costumes and working alongside actors who resurrected iconic historical figures was an unforgettable experience.

“I’ve done leading roles, speaking roles, background roles and even worked as a crew member,” said Major who was born and raised in Freeport, Bahamas. “This film and what it stands for is my greatest experience to date. It was an absolutely life changing.”

To add to it, Major says his encounter with the legendary Oprah Winfrey was a chance of a lifetime.
“Oprah is incomparable,” he said. “She served as a producer on the film and also acted. Oprah was nice to the entire cast no matter what your role was. The day we filmed with her actually was the day Maya Angelou passed away. Through all of that, Oprah still came to work and I was humbled to have witnessed her deliver a powerful performance. It looks great on camera but to be there, to feel her deliver through what must have been a horrible loss was nothing short of spiritual. It truly felt like we were living in a time where Black people weren't able to register to vote.”

Major, who began his film and theater career in South Florida said that he is even more inspired to pursue his goals of helping others in the industry. He revealed that he wants to work with Caribbeans, especially Bahamians, to help them bring their talents to the US.

More than five hundred beneficiaries of the Department of Social Services' Food Assistance Programme were presented with their Pre-paid Cards Monday as part of the Government of The Bahamas' Social Safety Net Reform Project.

All other persons who have been certified eligible for assistance will be added to the new payment system at the end of February, 2015.

Minister of Social Services and Community Development, the Hon. Melanie Sharon Griffin said the Government of The Bahamas, cognizant of the fact that the payment of Value Added Tax (VAT) on food items will impact the purchasing power of beneficiaries of the Food Assistance Programme, has made the decision to increase the rate of assistance by five per cent "to counteract this."

HEART MONTH ….. Sustaining Heart Beats One At A Time

For years, doctors, nurses and health care practitioners have encouraged adults to live heart healthy. Heart disease has been and still is the number one killer of people around the world. Heart disease does not discriminate by age, gender, financial status, ethnicity, or colour. Heart disease, impacts not only the individual who is ill, but also their family and society, regardless of the age of the individual.

In adults, most often, heart disease does not develop over night and the risk of developing it can be reduced. Heart disease normally develops as a result of lifestyle choices; what one eats, drinks, smokes and whether one exercises.

Unlike adults, newborn infants do nothing to develop congenital heart disease; they are born with heart disease, should they have it. They need the help of others to thrive and survive.

Each year millions of children are born worldwide. One percent of the children born are diagnosed with congenital heart disease i.e heart disease at birth; this is also true for The Bahamas.  Oftentimes, without intervention, these children may die.

February is celebrated as Heart Month globally. The Heart Ball Committee, The Sir Victor Sassoon (Bahamas) Heart Foundation and The Bahamas Heart Association want to invite the general public to join them as they celebrate Heart Month and help to sustain heart beats one at a time.

As we embrace Heart Month, we would like to encourage the public to join us in the fight against heart disease. The Heart Foundation, the Heart Ball Committee, The Bahamas Heart Association and sponsors have joined together to host many informative and educational events. I wish to encourage the general public to come out and support these events; you can learn to save a life.

The major fundraiser to aid The Heart Foundation is the Annual Heart Ball. I would encourage those who can, to please come out and support this event. You can help to save a child’s life”.

“Affairs of the Heart….Sustaining Heart Beats One at a Time: Tyrese’s Journey to Heart Health

$

February is a special month. It’s a month to celebrate love and matters of the heart; it’s Valentine’s time and Heart Month.  As you get ready for Valentine’s, The Heart Ball Committee is calling on you to remember a child in need of heart care; please help to save a life.

Heart disease is the number one killer of persons in The Bahamas and around the world, regardless of age. It can create an emotional and financial challenge when it hits those most vulnerable, our children. Oftentimes, the parents of children with heart disease cannot financially assist their child with heart care; they need help to save their child’s life. The Sir Victor Sassoon (Bahamas) Heart Foundation, a non-profit organization, strives to help repair the hearts of children who can not ordinarily afford heart care. They rely heavily upon the generosity of the public to help save lives.

As Valentine’s approach, a family is grateful that their daughter received a late Christmas present for Valentine’s and was given an opportunity to live. The Glinton family is now calling on others to join them in the fight against heart disease in children.

In May 2011, Tyrese Glinton was born. Her parents were very excited about the birth. However, they were not prepared for the news that was to come.

Immediately after Tyrese’s birth, medical examinations revealed that Tyrese had a heart murmur. Further testing revealed she had a large hole in her heart and was diagnosed with teratology of fallot (TOF). TOF causes low oxygen levels in the blood; a child can turn bluish-purple and die. Before she could have surgery, she was hospitalized due to smoke inhalation that resulted in her not being able to breathe and turning purple.

This leads to cyanosis (a bluish-purple color to the skin). The classic form includes four defects of the heart and its major blood vessels. Whilst the cost of and ECG may be someone’s weekly salary, the cost of a surgery to correct TOF is simply unaffordable to many. The surgery to correct TOF can cost over $250,000. Without care, a child can die. Sadly, in June 2011, Tyrese had a close encounter after smoke inhalation from a distant fire that resulted in her not being able to breathe and turning purple; she was hospitalized and later released. Her parents prayed for a miracle to repair Tyrese’ heart, so she would never undergo such an experience again.

Thanks to the generosity of The Sir Victor Sassoon (Bahamas) Heart Foundation, Tyrese had heart surgery on February 15, 2012, at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital.  Tyrese stayed in hospital 5 weeks recovering from surgery and complications that arose during and after surgery, including a stroke. Today, Tyrese is a very active 3 year old who shares her story.

With a thankful heart and an understanding of the challenges and concerns parents and The Heart Foundation face, Tyrese’s mother wishes to encourage the public to support The Heart Foundation.

“I am truly grateful that my baby is alive today. I am grateful to The Heart Foundation and Dr. Jerome Lightbourne for all they have done.

Put yourself in my shoes. Suppose it were your child. You’d want someone to help. One day it can happen to you. You never know. Help the children. They need help. The Heart Foundation save lives”.

On Saturday February 14th, 2015, under the patronage of Her Excellency Dame Margueritte Pindling, Governor-General, and The Right Honourable Perry G. Christie, Prime Minister, and Mrs. Christie, the Heart Ball Committee will host the Annual Heart Ball at Melia Nassau Beach. The theme for this event is “Affairs of the Heart….Sustaining Heart Beats One at a Time”.  This is event the main fundraiser to aid The Heart Foundation. Tickets for regular seating are $250 per person. Platinum seating is also available.

The public can further assist The Heart Foundation via: donations (time, money, gifts), sponsorship, sponsoring events, purchasing ads in the Heart Ball booklet, supporting events hosted by The Heart Ball Committee or in aid of The Heart Foundation, media support, joining the Bahamas Heart Association and much more.

Finally, please be on the look-out for the Heart Month Calendar and participate in the events. These are opportunities to keep your heart healthy and also to help repair the heart of a child.

To purchase tickets or for more details, please call 327-0806.

She enjoys running around, dancing, talking, walking, and playing with twin sisters.
