Experts say that the majority of people do not easily fall for falsehoods. But when misinformation offers simple, casual explanations for otherwise random events, “it helps restore a sense of agency and control for many people,” says Sander van der Linden, a social psychologist at the University of Cambridge.

The misinformation constantly swirling around us is now set against the backdrop of the pandemic, an unemployment crisis, mass demonstrations against police violence and racial injustice, and a deeply polarizing presidential election. During times of turmoil, the explanations provided by conspiracy theories and other falsehoods can be even more appealing—though not impossible to discourage or resist.  Read more >>

Drake has been spotted in the Bahamas with fellow rappers Meek Mill and Lil Baby — and the trio were seen last night at a high stakes baccarat table at the Baha Mar Casino, with Fanatics mogul Michael Rubin.

Meek posted an image to Instagram of the group at the casino, and sources tell Page Six that they’re staying at nearby Albany — the private retreat that’s owned by a group including Justin Timberlake and pro golfers Tiger Woods and Ernie Els.

A source told Page Six of the rappers and Rubin, “They’ve been seen on the beach by day, and are hanging out at Baha Mar by night at the casino.” Drake had previously be seen at Baha Mar resort celebrating New Year’s Eve with fellow Toronto hip hop artist, PartyNextDoor.  Read more >>

Environmental activist Kristal Ambrose saw firsthand the profound harm plastic waste can cause to wildlife, started a nonprofit and successfully lobbied her government to ban all single-use plastics in The Bahamas. She’s been recognized for her work with a 2020 Goldman Environmental Prize and joins Host Bobby Bascomb to talk about the inspiration for her organizing and further efforts to curb plastic waste and pollution.  Read more >>

Eyewitness News

NASSAU, BAHAMAS — Minister of Health Renward Wells said the government is “working on all fronts” to secure COVID-19 vaccines and expects to obtain a vaccine in-country by the second quarter of 2021.

COVID-19 vaccines have arrived in the British Caribbean, including the Cayman Islands and Turks and Caicos.

“Those countries in the Caribbean [which] are receiving COVID-19 vaccines, you would realize that they are all British protectorates, a part of the United Kingdom and a part of the UK’s policy is it is distributing vaccines to its territories,” Wells said during a Ministry of Health press conference.

“So, you would find the Cayman Islands, Turks and Caicos, the British Virgin Islands — those entities receiving vaccines.

“As I would have said in my statement earlier, The Bahamas government is aggressively seeking to procure vaccines and we’re doing all that we can to ensure that in the first quarter of this year that we’ll be able to present a viable vaccine to the Bahamian people.”  Read more >>

Caribbean Journal

The travel industry has changed in more ways than we can count, but it’s also put that much more emphasis on the decision of where to stay.

There’s so much more thought that goes into the choice of accommodation, and for some, the idea of a smaller, boutique stay is that much more appealing as an oasis from large crowds.

And thankfully the Caribbean is filled with small hotels, the sort of places where personality is a priority, where the square footage is small but the hospitality is big.

And then there are the really small hotels, the place that are beyond the boutique.

The ones we’re talking about here are truly tiny, all of them with 13 rooms or less, meaning you’ll find the essence of the authentic Caribbean vacation.

Here are seven of our favorite tiny hotels in the Caribbean, from The Bahamas to Aruba.  Read more >>

The Straw Markets are closed and there are no visitors buying authentic souvenir straw crafts or browsing the stores and eating in the restaurants at Port Lucaya Marketplace - making it a dismal start to 2021.

The 80 or so straw vendors have not been out since March because cruise ships are still not sailing due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which resulted in the shutdown of the global cruise industry.

With the Grand Lucaya Resort closed and no cruise ships sailing, Grand Bahama’s tourism sector continues to struggle. For the first time, shop owners at Port Lucaya are “purely reliant” on locals for business sales.

Loren Madu, manager of Freeport Jewelers, is praying the situation does not last much longer. As a result of the lack of visitors, they are focusing more on getting local customers in the store.

“We are doing a lot of stuff on social media and have started doing radio ads on the radios to encourage Bahamians to come out and shop,” she said.  Read more >>

A 75-year retail institution becomes latest casualty of COVID-19

One of the oldest businesses in Downtown Nassau is preparing to close its doors permanently, after 75 years of providing some of the island’s most exquisite and delicate homewares to the Bahamian public.

Established in a pre-independence Bahamas in 1946, The Linen Shop has seen its share of turmoil – surviving through multiple recessions, changes in government and an evolving economy – but nothing could prepare it for COVID-19.

Senior buyer for The Linen Shop Gloria Raine said while she considers the store an institution and even though she and her staff are heartbroken, the writing had been on the wall for a long time now.

“Aside from John Bull and I think A. Baker and Sons, that’s another longstanding store, it’s a very small handful left that have any history at all,” she told Guardian Business standing at the entrance of the store.

The COVID-19 pandemic and its ensuing lockdowns and travel restrictions has laid a heavy hand on the business, which over the years has relied mostly on cruise passengers, who have been non-existent since last year in February.  Read more >>

THE government has launched a small-scale pilot programme involving single-sex classes following a promise made by the Free National Movement in its last manifesto.

Education Minister Jeff Lloyd Lloyd, in 2017, said his party would “immediately” implement a pilot programme to separate boys and girls in classes and schools, adding he believed they learn differently and that studies show young adults thrive better in single-sex classes.

This week, Mr Lloyd said a small-scale pilot programme was launched in the 2018-2019 school year and officials hope to ramp up the programme after the pandemic.

“We’ve not done it on a whole scale (level) but we did have an attempt at it in Grand Bahama and we are seeing in at least one district where that is bringing some benefits,” he said. “We recognise that that is something that some of our young men and young women need particularly in early grades.  Read more >>

The competition between the United States and China will be one of the most important national security issues confronting the Biden administration.. In an article in Foreign Affairs, President-elect Biden wrote about the special challenge China presents. In an article for the same magazine, Jake Sullivan, the president-elect’s national security advisor, along with Asia-expert Kurt Campbell wrote, “China today is a peer competitor that is more formidable economically, more sophisticated diplomatically and more flexible ideologically than the Soviet Union ever was.”

Competition is one approach, but confrontation is also part of the discussion. There must be a comprehensive and sophisticated approach toward China.

It should include engaging with nations close to home where the United States should have an historic, competitive advantage. Specifically, there needs to be a focused and sustained effort for the United States to strengthen its relationship with the Bahamas, where China, for a number of years, has invested. The problems with the dynamic in U.S.-Bahamian relations represent a microcosm of the issues the United States must address if it is to push back against China’s global engagement efforts.  Read more >>
