Friends of the Environment July 2015 E-News

Working in the environmental world can sometimes  be a bit "doom and gloom". Our marine resources are declining, climate change is happening faster than we thought, etc., etc.  However we at FRIENDS are constantly reassured that there is hope, and that hope comes from the students we work with every day. Summer camp reenergizes the staff and volunteers.

We see the potential and know that our country will be in very capable hands. Summer camp also reminds us of the impact we have on these students and we are confident they are going to take on this world with leadership skills and a sense of appreciation that came from their experiences at FRIENDS.

Thank you for your support to make it all happen! Together we are making a difference for Abaco's future!

BREADFRUIT: NATURE’S BOUNTY (WITH ADDED MUTINY)

Capt. William Bligh achieved fame for all the wrong reasons. Despite a distinguished and wide-ranging seafaring career he is widely remembered for just two things: (1) The Bounty and (2) Mutiny On. In 1787, he was dispatched to Tahiti to collect specimens of breadfruit (a fruit of the Pacific islands, in particular Polynesia) to help provide food for the British colonies in the West Indies. To be clear, the breadfruit was intended to be a basic and cheap staple food not just for settlers but also for the indigenous population.

by Amanda Diedrick - littlehousebytheferry

"This blog post is loooooong overdue, but timely, in light of my last post. Green Turtle Cay is home to some exceptional, community-minded young people, including Christian McIntosh.
Late last year, Christian, then a senior at Marsh Harbour’s Forest Heights Academy, told his mom, Molly McIntosh, that he’d like to organize a beach cleanup."

Junkanoo Fest in West End unfolding as vital initiative by tourism ministry

By Fred Sturrup

The heart of the West End Grand Bahama Settlement on bay front, came alive once again this past Saturday afternoon, evening and into the night. The Junkanoo Summer Festival in West End environment was reminiscent of the Bahamas Junkanoo Carnival on Taino Beach this past May.

Of course, the volumes of the events are not comparable. Bahamas Junkanoo Carnival was a much larger affair. However, the very essence of Bahamian culture, pulsating music of national artists, native dishes, tranquility and the pleasing nature of a people were on vivid display. The organizers from the Grand Bahama Ministry of Tourism indeed are credited with having a product that is becoming more and more established as a social/entertainment fixture on the island.

Documentary Focuses on Abaco Potcakes and Their Rescuers

New York City based actress and media content director/producer,  Evelyn Vaccaro, of Vaccaro Creative Productions, and Wendy Shankin- Cohen, CEO and President of Dr. Harvey’s fine health food and all-natural products for companion animals, teamed up to begin a journey of good will that launched them from NYC to Abaco. What compelled this mission of love was a collection of rather endearing and often unfortunate residents of these islands, the Royal Bahamian Potcake.
Evelyn’s dedication towards these dogs began 24 years ago during a visit to Nassau, where she first came across and fed a skinny street Potcake. Since then she has continued her drive to help them by becoming a rescuer and foster in the US. In her professional field of film and TV, her vision was to bring to light the perils of the street Potcakes of The Bahamas, living a hard life in what many consider paradise.

Artist & Musician to freestyle in Pompey Square for worthy causes

Artist & Musician to freestyle in Pompey Square for worthy causes On Thursday, August 27, 2015, one artist and one musician will take to Pompey Square for an 8-hour live art and music showcase. Dubbed “Freestyle: Outside the Lines pt. 1,” Allan P. Wallace, of recent celebrity salt portraiture fame, and Arthol Gibson, local hip-hop and chill house DJ, also known as Ampero, hope to raise funds in support of two very worthy causes.

Both artists recognize the importance of giving back to their respective artistic communities and helping make things a little bit easier for the next generation of young Bahamian creatives. Chosen as beneficiaries of the event will be the Art Supply Drive, which raises gently used or new art materials to ease the financial burden of art students in the government school system. The Rhythym ‘N’ Youth Rake & Scrape Ensemble, born out of Gerald Cash Primary School, is another fantastic initiative led by Nathaniel Adams that ensures the cultural sustainability of our most precious traditional musical expression. According to Wallace, “I want to give back [… and at this event] I’m going to be out there wildin’ out, just painting. That’s why I wanted to be a part of it. Freestyle should be about changing the energy of the downtown space, creating positive vibes and connecting with the wider community.”

Members of the public are invited to bring a brush and jam with the artist and also donate materials on site for the Art Supply Drive. On the music side, DJ Ampero expects to surprise the audience with his range of musical taste as well as with guests performers who will visit throughout the day, including the talented Rhythm ‘N’ Youth ensemble. Ampero envisions that, “the next generation [of Bahamian musicians] will have so many opportunities and avenues available to them. I see things just getting a bit more amplified with people seeing more opportunities to tap into their creative value and expressing themselves.”

While the future is bright for both these artists, they’re heading back to the school next week to creative a positive impact. Transforming the square into their old art & music classrooms, the event should bring a touch of nostalgia to those who’ve long left these rooms behind. The event will be held from 11am – 7pm and is free and open to the public. For more information on the event, please visit facebook.com/supplyyartbs.

BTC helps strike-up the Urban Renewal marching band

NASSAU, Bahamas -- Today’s 600-strong Urban Renewal Marching Band is thirteen-years old, the age of many of its members who thrill us with their stylized performance and diverse musical inventory. Originally an ‘add-on’ to Prime Minister Perry Christie’s Urban Renewal initiative, its success has given it a life of its own, and bettered those of many in the band.

Alexandra Kaufmann-Fox Finds Her Calling In Yoga

By ALESHA CADET
Tribune Features Reporter
acadet@tribunemedia.net

REFLECTING on her choice of profession, the popular Confucius quote “Find a job you love and you’ll never work a day in your life” comes to mind for yoga instructor Alexandra Kaufmann-Fox.

She enjoys having the opportunity to meet people from all walks of life, helping them reach their goals; whether that goal is wanting to use yoga to gain flexibility, strength, lose weight, or to help relieve stress and gain self-confidence, she appreciates it all.

With so many different types of yoga, Alexandra said the practice of it can vary greatly. Generally, she said, a yoga class focuses on aligning movement with breath, and in yoga, instructors use breathing as a guide to initiate movement and to create space for something new.

Young entrepreneur makes sizeable donation through her foundation to Martin Town Primary School

By Jamie Smith

Taylor Moxey is no stranger to the media, all for good reason. Young Taylor is an established entrepreneur, the proprietor of a successful pastry company, “Taylor the Chef” in Florida. From the proceeds accumulated through her company, she has opted to contribute a significant amount of her earnings to Dyslexia research as well as other philanthropic efforts through the ‘Taylor Moxey Foundation,’ a non-profit organization.

Through the foundation Moxey has been quiet influential in showcasing the importance of reading within the United States and the Caribbean. By doing so, many have donated a multitude of books as well as electronic devices in the form of a television and DVD players to assist in Taylor’s efforts.
