Major partnership results in scholarships

SOL AND FRIENDS’ SCHOLARSHIP - The Sol and Friends’ scholarship and mentorship program will offer at least 10 successful applicants up to two year scholarships at The Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institution (BTVI).   While at BTVI, recipients will also be mentored by participating Esso dealers and Sol vendors.  A few members of the team are shown, including seated in front row from left to right: Sol Bahamas’ General Manager, Keith Glinton; Minister of Education, Science and Technology, the Honourable Jerome Fitzgerald and BTVI’s Acting President, Dr. Iva Dahl.

At least 10 people will be offered up to two year scholarships to attend The Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institution (BTVI), courtesy of   Sol Petroleum Bahamas Limited and its partners.

The major public-private partnership also includes New Providence Esso dealers and vendors.  Sol is the exclusive licensee of Esso branded fuels in The Bahamas.

General Manager of Sol Bahamas, Keith Glinton, said BTVI has a lot to offer and the $1,500 scholarship for each successful applicant will go a long way in expanding their knowledge and skillset.   “BTVI is a national investment and a good educational value that should be supported…with the launch of this program we aim to help Bahamians capitalize on the existing opportunity to become qualified, productive and potentially entrepreneurs through technical and vocational education, particularly at BTVI,” said Mr. Glinton.

On hand to endorse the partnership was Minister of Education, Science and Technology, the Honourable Jerome Fitzgerald, who said the announcement was a clear indication that The Bahamas is in alignment with global education trends.  He made reference to the Sustainable Development Goals of which goal number four is to “ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote life-long learning opportunities for all.”

“Truth be told, technical and vocational careers have become the driving force of many economies and many countries are investing heavily in technical and vocational institutions that are on par with the traditional four-year colleges and universities,” said Minister Fitzgerald.

Minister Fitzgerald noted that his ministry has a renewed commitment to career and technical education and more specifically, BTVI.

“As the minister responsible for BTVI, I am deeply committed to the success of this institution and its ability to empower Bahamians, both young and old, and not just educate, but also create a broader cross-section of skilled entrepreneurs,” stated Minister Fitzgerald.

“As the premier technical and vocational education facility in the country, BTVI continues to provide value to many of our students, exposing them to cutting-edge developments in a world that is technologically-savvy,” he added.

On behalf of BTVI, Acting President, Dr. Iva Dah,l noted her appreciation for Sol and Friends’ substantial investment and the confidence they have reposed in the institution.

“We cannot express our thanks enough for Sol and its partners for helping the youth - and not so young - of our nation.  These scholarships will go a long way for those who don’t have the means.  What Sol, its dealers and vendors are doing is most appreciated,” said Dr. Dahl.

In addition to the $1,500 scholarships each, while the recipients are being educated at BTVI, they will also be mentored by participating Esso dealers and the Sol vendors.  Those mentors and dealers will undergo mentorship training and then meet with recipients at least twice per semester.

Meanwhile, Minister Fitzgerald’s hope is that the success of the program will serve as a catalyst for technical and vocational education throughout The Bahamas.

On August 31st The Minister of the Environment officially declared 18 new marine protected areas in The Bahamas, four of which are located in Abaco. The East Abaco Creeks National Park, Cross Harbour National Park, The Marls National Park and The Blue Holes National Park are officially on the map!

There have been many causes for celebration, but no champagne toast has ever felt more rewarding than this one!

Thank you to all the groups, individuals and students who took the time to attend meetings, write letters of support, lobby the Bahamas government and most importantly, remain dedicated to seeing these areas protected. Thank you to our political leaders for supporting the community in this endeavor.

What a win for conservation!!! I hope you are as proud as we are to be part of this lasting legacy for Abaco and The Bahamas.

ENSURING that “no girl is left behind”, a local non-profit organisation, Sisters of Strength, is raising the bar to empower young women to lead change in the Bahamas.

Based in Grand Bahama, Sisters of Strength is a professional development programme for young ladies with the aim of raising awareness of social issues through educational seminars, conferences and girl talk sessions that support and empower young women to be confident, assertive and productive contributing members of society.

The organisation believes all girls should be able to have ambitious aspirations, discover their self-worth and their capacity to shape their own world.

Early birthday gift for scholarship recipient

KIWANIS CLUB OF CABLE BEACH recently awarded the fifth recipient of the Charles Johnson Memorial Scholarship to BTVI Auto Mechanics student, Deex Colebrook.  Shown seated from left to right are: Kiwanis Club of Cable Beach President, Tareco Laing; recipient, Deex and BTVI’s Acting President, Dr. Iva Dahl. Standing are Kiwanis Club of Cable Beach Assistant Treasurer, Michelle Cartwright (l) and Leesa Coakley, mother of the recipient.

A week before his 18th birthday, Deex Colebrook became the fifth recipient of the Charles Johnson Memorial Scholarship. It turned out to be an early birthday present, thanks to the Kiwanis Club of Cable Beach. The Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI) Auto Mechanics student has never met the late, Mr. Johnson - a Kiwanian after whom the scholarship is named - but he is certainly benefitting from his vision.

Mr. Johnson, who passed away on May 10th, 2010, hosted Super Bowl fundraisers at his house each February, with the vision of granting a BTVI Auto Mechanics student a scholarship. It was a personal and passionate mission of his, particularly as a mechanic himself. And although he never saw the scholarship come to fruition, the Kiwanis Club of Cable Beach ensured it became a reality.

The fundraiser continues each February. Tickets are sold in order to watch the game and eat to one’s heart’s content - all in an effort to grant a BTVI Mechanics student a scholarship. For the past four years, the scholarships have ranged between $1,500 and $2,000.

Deex, who is a 2015 graduate of St. John’s College, was humbled and grateful to have been chosen.

“I thank Kiwanis for this cheque. It’s a burden off my parents.  It feels good that they don’t have to pay,” said the teenager.

Deex began learning Auto Mechanics when he was in 10thgrade, stating that he loves the sound of an engine and is ready to learn more about the intricacies of vehicles.  The criteria for the scholarship includes acceptance into the Auto Mechanics program and maintaining a 2.5 Grade Point Average (GPA) or above.   Last year saw the scholarship awarded to the first female recipient, Zananthonia Saunders.

On hand during the presentation to Deex were BTVI’s Acting President, Dr. Iva Dahl and President of the Kiwanis Club of Cable Beach, Tareco Laing, both of whom encouraged the young man to remain focused.

MANATEES IN THE BAHAMAS: A SHORT HISTORY 1904-2015

Felice Leanne Knowles of the Bahamas Manatee Club has written a great round-up of the Bahamas manatee history for International Manatee Day. She has included their current whereabouts as at September 2015. I’ve added some illustrative images. I’ve called it a “short” history since, although the incidence of recorded manatee sightings in The Bahamas spans 109 years, there was a complete blank of 73 years until 1976, then only sporadic reports until the 1990s.

NASSAU, Bahamas -- The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism has signed on as the host sponsor of the Caribbean Muzik Festival, which will this year commemorate a momentous milestone in the history of The Bahamas.

The occasion also marks the 30th anniversary of the Nassau Accord, hailed as the key step toward ending apartheid in South Africa and securing South African anti-apartheid revolutionary Nelson Mandela’s release from prison.

It was during the historic 1985 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in The Bahamas that the landmark Nassau Accord was established. The package of sanctions and inducements increased pressure on the South African government to dismantle its system of racial segregation.

Here in the Bahamas, this niche is still mostly unexplored, but Conesha Knowles is on a mission to change this.
