The Bahamas International Film Festival (BIFF) will be showcasing a film spotlight of INDIA’S DAUGHTER, directed by Leslee Udwin.
An amazing documentary supported by Meryl Streep and Sean Penn, won the Spirit Of Freedom Award at the 2015 Bahamas International Film Festival.
Details:
India's Daughter, director Leslee UdwinMovie - $8Movie, Dinner, Dessert and Wine - $20Galleria JFK, Theater 1Time - 6pm
This documentary film pays tribute to the remarkable and inspiring short life of Jyoti Singh and documents the brutality of her gang-rape and murder in Delhi in December 2012.
It also examines the mindset of the men who committed the rape, and - perhaps most importantly - it sets these specifics against a wider in-depth exploration of the patriarchal society and culture which not only seeds but may be said even to encourage violence against women. The focus of the film's exploration is on the compelling human stories behind the incident in the context of a world in which brutality against women is so commonplace. Ultimately, the film is optimistic - the case has been a catalyst for change, and the massive public response to the incident bears witness to an attitudinal change on the horizon, which the film seeks to amplify.

…so this wont go well
Bahamians have a tendency to never want to deal with what’s right in front of their faces. Once someone throws us a party or gives out free T-shirts and or chicken, then all is right with the world. In fact, it’s a huge reason political parties win on this island, because for some reason we are so distracted by free food, beer and good ass music that we’ll vote for the Klan in if they don’t run out of wings. An exclusive post-secondary scholarship fund has been officially launched for residents of the Bain and Grants Town community. Seated from left to right during the press conference are: Assistant Superintendent of Police, Anthony Rolle; Minister of National Security and Member of Parliament for the Bain and Grants Town constituency, the Honourable, Dr. Bernard Nottage; Chairman of The Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institution, Felix Stubbs and co-chairman of Urban Renewal, Cynthia “Mother” Pratt.
An exclusive post-secondary scholarship fund has been officially launched for residents of the Bain and Grants Town community.
Deserving residents between the ages of 16 and 35 are eligible to secure scholarships to attend The Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institution (BTVI), The College of The Bahamas (COB), Bahamas Baptist Community College, Atlantic College or any other local post-secondary accredited institution approved by the Ministry of Education. Once chosen, recipients are also expected to perform community service within the area.
“Our vision is to ensure that the door of opportunity is open to deserving residents of this community who demonstrate a willingness to learn and excel, but who cannot afford the cost of higher education,” said Assistant Superintendent of Police Anthony Rolle, who is chairman of the scholarship Board of Governors.
“Our goal is to award scholarships to individuals who excel in academic or technical studies, who possess a keen desire to become an entrepreneur and who currently or potentially have the ability to make a significant, positive impact in the Bain and Grants Town community,” he stated.
ASP Rolle hastily emphasized that the scholarship fund is apolitical.
“Even though members from the Bain and Grants Town Urban Renewal office are some of the key players in this initiative, this organization is non-governmental,” he stressed.
“It is a community-based effort that’s derived from meaningful relationships with corporate partners, community and religious leaders and the fine, dedicated officers of the Bain and Grants Town Urban Renewal office,” said ASP Rolle.
BTVI’s Chairman, Felix Stubbs, congratulated the board for what he considers to be a wonderful initiative.
“I hope it will be duplicated across communities. Once we give people the opportunity to attain higher education, we give them the opportunity to elevate themselves from their present state,” said Mr. Stubbs.
“Unfortunately, Bain and Grants Town has a reputation as a high crime area, but this will change the impression people will have of the community because when the recipients attain knowledge and skills and get jobs, it will help reduce the crime rate,” he stated.
Mr. Stubbs then went on to announce that BTVI is committed to making a financial donation to the scholarship fund.
Also announcing contributions to the fund were Minister of National Security and Member of Parliament for Bain and Grants Town, the Honourable Bernard Nottage, who pledged $10,000, while Urban Renewal co-chairman Algernon Allen gave a cheque of $1,000 in the name of his parents, Harry and Jestina Allen. Both Minister Nottage and Mr. Allen are products of the Bain and Grants Town area.
Minister Nottage noted that not everyone has money to give, but there are ways of raising additional funds for the scholarship fund.
“As Bain and Grants Town people, we can do this. And to the parents here today, it isn’t about giving your children the Nike tennis and those things. It is discipline and exposure to the Word of God. Parents sometimes determine the success of their children. Parents have to take a greater interest in their children,” said Minister Nottage.
“Instead of young people using what they have to sell drugs or hold up someone in the backyard, let’s give them something that will give them the same self-worth which they seem to get when they hold a gun. These fellas who think they are bad, within them is a talent that could be developed for their good and the good of the community,” he stated.
Minister Nottage added that it is important the initiative does not become a one-time fund, but that it is built upon for many others to benefit. BTVI’s Chairman, Felix Stubbs chats with 21-year-old Burdecia Sands, a resident of Bain and Grants Town, who is interested in studying cosmetology at BTVI.
Meanwhile, two members of the board, proprietor of PGA Electrical Lumber and Building Supplies, Paul Hepburn and Operations Manager at The Sign Man, Patricia Cleare, assured residents once their programs are completed, and the opportunity presents itself, they are willing to employ individuals whose skills are applicable to their respective companies.
Mr. Hepburn is not only a product of Bain and Grants Town, but has built his business there as well.
“A lot of people told me to take my business out of Bain Town, but I am comfortable here and am endeavouring to expose the young men and women. If we give you knowledge, you will see yourself as more valuable, and once you see what you are worth, we will see change on the outside,” said Mr. Hepburn.
Co-chair of Urban Renewal, Cynthia “Mother” Pratt appealed to the residents to take advantage of the “golden opportunity” and one young woman, Burdecia Sands, is already expressing excitement about the possibility of attending BTVI. The 21-year-old wants to study cosmetology and become an entrepreneur.
“I feel it’s a good opportunity, especially because not everyone has funds to go to school. I also feel this will increase my chances of employment,” said the young woman who is currently unemployed.
Scholarship applications are to be submitted to the Bain and Grants Town Urban Renewal office by the last Friday in May. Recipients will be informed by the last Friday in June and the first lot of scholarships will be awarded in July.

Almost one month after BTC officially launched its FLOW TV on the island of Bimini, rave reviews are pouring in about its crisp clear picture and wide selection of channels and programs from many residents of that island. Those reasons coupled with a lack of options from competitors, like Cable Bahamas, a lack of access to local programming and unreliable service are amongst the reasons customers say they were leaving their current provider and making the switch to BTC's FLOW TV.
Encouraging testimonials have come from religious leaders, community activists, retirees, business persons, sporting buffs and educational officials. They are all in agreement that FLOW TV is the ingredient that was missing from Bimini's spiritual experience, social life and family entertainment. A void has been filled by BTC's FLOW TV. Prior to FLOW TV, Family Island customers like those in Bimini were limited to satellite services or basic cable. Now FLOW TV powered by BTC is revolutionizing the way that customers experience TV.
Over 300 customers, including those who were selected to test the service during its roll-out have already signed up to receive FLOW TV, which offers up to 170 IPTV channels.
FLOW TV's diverse package options and the ability to customize packages through "a Flow on your own" have also spurred creative use of the services as an educational support tool which may change how lessons are taught at the Louise McDonald High School in Bimini. The school has received a three-month free trial of BTC FLOW TV and four classrooms have been upgraded by BTC for future development.
According to Principal at the high school Wesley Rolle, the children in Bimini have embraced the latest technology. He said they were interested in BTC's educational package with the history and science channels. They are now using channels like Animal Planet, Discovery Channel and National Geographic to support the school's curriculum. Rolle was also fascinated by the cloud recording feature which he described as "particularly helpful" because Teachers can record shows and episodes as they relate to the school's curriculum and save them for later as part of the revision process. The school's Principal is also encouraging staff to start a library of educational content, thanks to BTC's FLOW TV.
From Bimini, BTC's revolution of the television industry continues on the island of Inagua, the second in the chain of islands to launch the company's newest product FLOW TV. According to BTC's Senior Product Development Associate Colette Godfrey, who is overseeing the roll-out of FLOW TV in the Family Islands, the response to FLOW TV in Inagua has been very positive. To date, some 70 customers have signed up for the much anticipated service. Ms. Godfrey stated emphatically that while testing was being carried out, the response was overwhelming with "the product positive performance reviews serving as their own advertisement."
BTC's FLOW TV was a welcomed change for Inagua native Josett Pinder, who was among those selected to test the service in her neighborhood. She is now an enthusiastic customer. "Where I live, we didn't have Cable TV at all," she said. "For ten years I had nothing but DVDs so I am really pleased not just to have the service, but that the audio and video are so clear. I have been really happy exploring the features and all of the channels. I trust BTC, they came through for us often and they have again. We are pleased and excited to be one of the first islands to have FLOW TV."
Another resident of Inagua, Deborah Farquharson expressed her pleasure and excitement with the wide selection of channels which also captured the interest of her family to FLOW TV. "My husband likes sports. I am into religion, and my granddaughter who lives with us loves Disney and the Cartoon channels. BTC gives us a much larger variety than we had previously,' she said.
Testing of BTC's FLOW TV is now in progress with 68 testers in Cat Island, the next destination for the launch of BTC's newest product, which will deliver television service to areas that never had it, The FLOW TV caravan will also move through Exuma where BTC expects to have its first customers very soon, especially to underserved areas like Barretarre, Rolleville and Williamstown, all settlements which have been virtually ignored by the Cable television provider. Testing is also ongoing in Long Island and parts of Andros.
BTC's Chief Executive Officer Mr. Williams is adamant that BTC will provide a "Connected Bahamas" offering the same quality of products and services on each island, noting that FLOW TV powered by BTC will continue to revolutionize the way that customers experience television throughout the islands of The Bahamas.
