FREE for limited time only - The Scottish Connection

As a tribute to my Scottish mother, the late Josephine McMurtrie Johanson, who passed away ten years ago this month and with Mothering Sunday coming up this weekend, I am offering the e-book version of “The Scottish Connection: A Journey Back – Mini-memoir” FREE for a limited time only.

In this nostalgic illustrated memoir I share memories of my 1978 journey back to Scotland with my mother and young sons, to revisit our Scottish roots. The Scottish Connection contains a wealth of information - Scottish ancestry, historical facts, genealogy, comparable 1978 prices, geographical descriptions, personal anecdotes, nostalgia and precious old photos.

Excerpt from The Scottish Connection: “A little way out of Aberfoyle we found the lodge on the Craigenveoch estate where my mother and family had lived. On warm, summer evenings she, Jack and Ray leaned out of their bedroom windows, watching their parents sing along with friends to gramophone music as they rowed across Loch Ard. The loch was described by Sir Walter Scott as a ‘beautiful sheet of water … a spacious mirror’.”

Best wishes,
Fay

The Rotary Bahamas Road to Peace Committee in conjunction with the Rotary Bahamas Scholarship Committee has afforded two residents of Bain and Grants Town the opportunity to pursue a professional development course in Face Care and Makeup Application at The Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI).  Standing L-R: Past Assistant Governor and Committee Co-Chair, Stan Charlton; Past President, Jamaal Davis; Committee Member and BTVI’s Associate Vice President of Fund Development, Alicia Thompson;  Committee Member, Mike Russell and Assistant Governor, Tim Ingraham. A recent Rotary sponsored peace initiative in Bain and Grants Town has reaped rewards for two residents of the area, landing them scholarships to The Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI).

Lerenzo Charles and Yasmine Williams are presently in BTVI’s Face Care and Makeup Application I course, thanks to the Rotary Bahamas Road to Peace Committee in consultation with the Rotary Bahamas Scholarship Committee, led by Chairman Philip Cummings. The scholarships, which include tuition and supplies, are to help them launch their own small businesses in the area, helping to further its development, as well as give residents the opportunity to become self-sufficient.

The message of peace and conflict resolution was taken to the streets, in and about the Hay Street area, encouraging the pursuit of wholesome activities. Meanwhile, the Rotary Road to Peace committee is dedicated to helping reduce the incidences of crime and violence in local communities, by working with organizations in those communities to provide effective counter measures to crime and violence.
Yasmin expressed her elation over learning she was a recipient of the scholarship and how she intends to capitalize on the five-week program.

“I knew I did not have the money to sign up for it, and it was a great opportunity at the time so I was excited.  It will help me to get my certificate, and then open my business or work for myself until I can open the business and expand,” said Yasmin.

“I plan to buy makeup and start to sell it from home because I already do makeup from home now. I am grateful because I believe that BTVI was a part of me getting the scholarship. If it wasn't for the persistence of the Associate Vice President of Fund Development, Alicia Thompson and her constant encouragement for me to enroll and collect my supplies that the Rotary also donated, I would not be here today,” she added.

Lerenzo is also grateful, stating that the course is a stepping stone to his vision of entrepreneurship.
“I find a great liking in seeing others look clean and sharp and being able to make one’s appearance stand out from others. I want to take beautification to a whole new level!” he exclaimed.

“It will propel me to achieve the goals and steps that I want to achieve. I want to open a business dealing with beautifying oneself. For example hair, makeup, skin - total beautification, total makeovers. My plan is to open my own beauty spa and the scholarship is helping me to achieve that. It gave me a great opportunity to make that extra leap. It got me started,” said Lerenzo.

Lerenzo lauded Rotary Bahamas as a corporate citizen, setting the standard for others in corporate Bahamas to follow.

“I am very grateful for the opportunity that they gave me and I am very thankful to know that someone is out there - that people are out there willing to take the initiative to help young people like myself succeed or make progress,” said Lerenzo.

Yasmin agreed that Rotary Bahamas ought to be applauded for its efforts.

“I think they are looking out for the people in the community and they have done a great job, because they have taken a lot of young people off the streets. They have helped young people to stay more occupied,” said the 22-year-old.

BTVI’s president, Dr. Robert W. Robertson also had commendation for Rotary Bahamas, noting that he strongly believes education is one of the keys to improving one's socio-economic conditions, thus putting a dent in the crime problem.

"We were pleased to have our team on the ground of the peace event, headed by our Associate Vice President of Fund Development, Alicia Thompson.  It was an excellent avenue to get the word out there that BTVI offers affordable excellence.  We are an institution where you can learn a trade and earn a living," said Dr. Robertson.

MORE than a dozen compassionate sixth grade students at Centreville Primary School gave handwritten poems and prayers to the Royal Bahamas Police Force (RBPF) yesterday for the families of the two teenage boys who were brutally murdered ten days ago.

Senior Pastor of Church of God of Prophecy and Former Assistant Commissioner of Police Hulan Hanna, who is also a member of Fathers Assisting Children and Teachers (FACT), said the idea for the students to write their feelings down came to him after he learned of the deaths of 13-year-old Keishon Williams and 15-year-old Davante Lindsey.

The bodies of the boys, who are cousins, were discovered shot to death on a dirt road off Graham Drive, Yellow Elder Garden on March 19.  Read more >>

Grand Bahama Faith Fest Exceeds Expectations of Organizers And Guests

FREEPORT, Grand Bahama (March 27, 2017) – The highly anticipated Grand Bahama Faith Fest, organized by Bishop Henry Fernandez Ministries and the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism (BMOT), held March 23-25, 2017 at the Grand Lucayan Resort was a resounding success.

According to organizers, the event was unequivocally enjoyed by all who attended, and exceeded their expectations.

Hundreds of persons from throughout the United States of America, Africa, Europe, the Caribbean and The Bahamas, as well as members of the international media, attended the three-day gospel event.

According to Bishop Fernandez, “Believers should always be walking in faith and living their best lives – now, and not apologizing for taking a vacation. Faith Fest is a time to bridge cultures and bring people together from around the world and The Bahamas, for an integration of one faith, while serving one God for a weekend of spiritual rejuvenation and physical relaxation.  It is a time for us to refuel from our busy day-to-day activities and experience transformation in our lives”.

Among the activities conducted at Faith Fest were daily spirit filled word sessions from Bishop Henry Fernandez, Bishop Cardinal McIntosh, Pastor Sheryl Brady; a late night comedy show with famed comedian Marcus Wiley and music performances by gospel recording artists Tye Tribbet, James Fortune and Jonathan Nelson.

Additional activities at the event included a seminar on relationships that featured a panel of Bahamian and American relationship experts, a beachside exercise and fitness workout, and an all-white party, immersed in Bahamian rake ‘n’ scrape and calypso music performed by the Cooling Waters and Simeon Outten, along with smooth sounding jazz.

Attendees also experienced various activities that the Grand Bahama destination offered, from snorkeling and jeep tour adventures to shopping and Bahamian dining, as well as numerous other Eco adventures.

Dwight Armbrister, Director of Religious Tourism at the BMOT, said that he could not have been more pleased with Faith Fest’s outcome; a project, he said that took two and a half years to materialize.

Originally planned for October 27-29, 2016, Faith Fest was postponed due to damages the (Grand Bahama) island sustained from Hurricane Matthew.

Permanent Secretary at the BMOT, Charles Albury, said “the Ministry is indeed grateful to Bishop Fernandez for bringing his event to Grand Bahama, particularly at a time, when the island really needed an injection into its economy. Some 11,000 persons working in the tourism sector lost their jobs as a result of Hurricane Matthew”.

“But, what a way to rebound,” he said, “its just such an awesome way to glorify God.  The people of Grand Bahama have endured so much, but they are resilient and know how to persevere.   They know who they are and whose they are,” he said.

Tim Kern, a journalist with Communities Digital News who echoed the sentiments shared by other media professionals, said he “was totally impressed and surprised by the incredible friendliness of the Bahamian people, despite their recent struggles from the storm.  The warm, non-obtrusive, hospitable and genuine friendly nature of Bahamians is refreshing and beautiful,” he said.

Expressing his gratitude towards the outcome of Faith Fest 2017, Bishop Henry Fernandez said, “We are eternally grateful to the Government of The Bahamas, the BMOT and its people and the overwhelming positive feedback from our registered guests, both abroad and in The Bahamas.  It is our hope that Faith Fest will return to The Bahamas again”.

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL  - March 28, 2017– The recent Trade Show/Dinner Presentation/Cultural Extravaganza by The Islands of The Bahamas in the cities of Burlington and Quincy, MA, drew crowds of travel agents despite chilly temperatures.

Temperatures in Boston recently dipped to the low teens as the area experienced a chilly spell at the very onset of the Spring Season.

The low temperatures did not daunt travel agents who showed up in good numbers at the recent Bahamas events and raved about the fun and excitement as they left the venues to return to the Boston chill outside.  Many of the agents said that the music and dancing throughout the evening had, "temporarily chased away the chill."

The agent's events, under the theme, "More Bahamas," were hosted by the Bahamas Tourism team out of New York, to share with Boston travel agents on the latest updates in The Bahamas, including new hotel developments, such as the Baha Mar Resort, which will have its soft opening on April 21st. Representatives from the Nassau/Paradise Island Promotion Board and the Out Island Promotion Board also updated on the properties on their Islands along with some hotel representatives who also presented at the events.

The agents were also updated on easy access into The Islands, including one- stop connections on Delta via Atlanta; Jet Blue; American Airlines over Miami and other seasonal flights.  Additionally, agents were reminded of Bahamas Celebration's Cruise and Stay out of West Palm Beach and the ferries out of South Florida to Grand Bahama and Bimini.

The Cultural Festivals on the Islands including the Bahamas Junkanoo Carnival and the Goombay and Junkanoo Summer Festivals were also shared on as well as highlights of some of the major sporting events that will be taking place in The Bahamas throughout the year including the IAAF Relays, and the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup Bahamas 2017.

Bahamian entertainer extraordinaire, Preston "Puzzle" Wallace, was the highlight of the evening's events, providing musical entertainment throughout the night.  Agent's merrily joined in the singing with the musician, gaily shouting out, "Come Again," each time he chanted, "It's my birthday."

The "More Bahamas” agent’s events provided educational information on The Bahamas destination as a whole but focused on the culture of The Bahamas - its music, its food and its people.  As a homage to the food, the meal choices included the cultural dish of "peas n rice" considered a staple of the Bahamian diet and continuing in the vein of things Bahamian, many of the agents who won prizes were happy to receive Bahamian brewed Kalik or Sands Beer in a Bahamian "logo" bag.

The events were a part of The Bahamas PR and Sales Mission to the area and were led by the Bahamas Area Manager, New York, Mikala Moss, assisted by other New York team members, Chrystal Bethel and Valery Brown-Alce, Sr. Director of Sales U.S, based in New York.  Assisting the New York team were Dupree Smith, District Manager, Houston, Nicholas Wisdom, Atlanta, GA based, and Jeannie Gibson, Manager Global Communications, Plantation, Florida.

The agents in attendance at the events will be added to The Bahamas Tourism’s Travel Agent's mailing list to receive a monthly Bahamas Travel Agents Newsletter, were encouraged to visit the newly updated bahamas.com website and also to enroll in the recently unveiled Bahamas Specialist Program.

It is a truly national festival since it covers not only Nassau and Grand Bahama but all of the family islands also.

Students do not just compete against each other on their own island but against all of the other students in their class throughout the Bahamas. Therefore the winners are the most outstanding musicians in the entire Bahamas.  Read more >>

The Dissolution of the Present Parliament

$

For general information, especially for the benefit of all those persons who would like to vote in the forthcoming General Election but have not yet registered to do so, it is my intention to cause the present Parliament to be dissolved on Tuesday, the 11th April, and to cause writs of election to be issued the same day.

This will mean that only those persons who would have registered to vote on or before Monday, April 10th would be able to vote in the forthcoming General Election.

I would therefore encourage all my fellow Bahamians to play their part in our democracy by registering to vote if they have not already done so, and to do so without further delay.

But I soon realised that when something is so organically good, you just leave it be and keep the fluff away.

Thailand was indeed the best vacation I’ve had so far. It was chock full of amazing days spent by some of the world’s most beautiful beaches, nights filled with dancing and soaking in the culture, authentic Thai food in abundance, meeting the kindest, friendliest people, the non-stop parties, the tailor made suits…and to think…

Bahamians love weddings.

Please understand me: We really could care less about your “forever” love, your commitment to each another or any of that foolishness. No, y’all had 2-5 years to figure all that shit out. We sat with you through the tears, the lies, the cheating and the tire slashing.

We endured it all.

Hell, we’re taking bets AT the wedding as to just how long it will be before you get sick of each other and get divorced.  Read more >>
