Diane Phillips: Excitement Of Danger - Until Hate
 Is Pointed Directly At You

(Today's editorial is courtesy of the Tribune,
and Mrs. Diane Philips, printed with permission)

Dear Readers,

This is a very personal story and, in some ways, it is a story about all of us.

It starts out with what we all feel though rarely - or reluctantly - put into words. We are strange human beings made more alive by excitement based on the threat of danger. Our adrenaline pumps harder, faster by the presence of fear. Our fists clench tighter anticipating but not knowing the outcome or what the next moment of recklessness will bring.

We felt it this week with the crashes at Daytona International Speedway where NASCAR, without the safety features of Formula 1 racing, delivered a heart-thumping fast action sport. Our pulse beats were timed to the tune of 200-mile-an-hour racing machines. We awaited the next crash and wanted to see flames but wanted just as badly for the driver to escape unharmed, eager to hug his wife and child. We never admit that's why we watch races but for most of us it's why we watch. We know there is speed, we sense there is danger and we do not know and cannot predict the outcome.

Who Are the Saints?
Ephesians 1:15-23

One of my favorite commercials is for Snickers candy bars. Several years ago they had an ad campaign where they touted Snickers as having everything you need (chocolate, peanuts, nugat) to hold you until you could have a regular meal. Their tag line was something like, "Not going anywhere for a while? Have a Snickers."

My favorite ad involved the Kansas City NFL team. You know how on the field, they have the team name and mascot in huge letters across the end zone? Well in this ad, you see an elderly grounds keeper spraying the paint on the grass in the end zone as the team comes off the field after practice. If you're not familiar with the NFL, Kansas City's mascot is the Chiefs. So this great big player stops for a moment, looks over the grounds keeper's shoulder and asks innocently, "Who are the Chefs?" Then the camera pans back and we see that the grounds keeper has failed to paint the "I" and so now the Chiefs are Chefs. I don't know, it just appeals to my quirky sense of humor. Read More
