The duo were representing the 25th Atlanta Caribbean Carnival where Celeste Marshall was this year’s grand marshal and Stilleet was a featured performer at several of the events. Greg Dingrando, the newcaster, revealed that he had visited The Bahamas off air, even took time to shake some cowbells and beat the Junkanoo drum while wearing a headpiece.

“We are bringing you the beauty and the sounds of the Bahamas from right here in downtown Atlanta!” he said while standing between the two Bahamian ambassadors.

“I’m delighted to be here and take part in these activities and all that Atlanta has to offer,” Marshall said when asked about her duties while on her first trip to the city. “I am looking forward to meeting your Mayor, and visiting some more of your sites to get to know this great city.”

Immediately after the interview Marshall and Stileet were whisked away to lead the Atlanta Caribbean Carnival parade.

“They are bringing The Bahamas to Atlanta,” Dingrando told his colleagues in the studio. “And you never know what you might see when we come back from break. I might just be doing a dance along with them as well.”

With an estimated 9.92 million people in Georgia - 500,000 of them in Atlanta alone - and with CBS having affiliates nationally, the appearance on the show was truly a tremendous opportunity for The Bahamas.

Extreme Kayak Fishing Tournament to move to Bahamas in 2014

Pictured above at the captain’s meeting before the Pompano tournament:  Left to right - Earl Miller, General Manager, Bahamas Tourist Office Vertical Markets;  Rosalyn Pinder, representing Freeport, Grand Bahama;  Douglas Perez, Extreme Kayak Fishing;  Donna Munroe, representing, Flamingo Bay Resort;  Richard Treco, Manager, BTO Vertical Markets and Joe Hector, Extreme Kayak Fishing Organizer.

The Extreme Kayak Fishing Tournament, called “May Madness,”  that recently drew 100 plus kayak participants to its event at Pompano Beach, South Florida, is expected to move to The Islands Of The Bahamas   in April of 2014.

The sport which involves fishing for Big Game from a kayak is expected to take place in Freeport, Grand Bahama at the Flamingo Bay Resort.  The organizers have already done some pre-fishing in The Bahamas and boast that they were able to catch a good number of species including Wahoos.

Extreme Kayak Fishing Tournament has been held in Florida over the past two years with the Broward Children’s Center Pompano, as its charity.  The event is said to be the largest Kayak Fishing Tournament of its kind in the United States at this time, and according to its organizers is growing consistently.

“We are so pumped over the event moving to The Bahamas,” organizer Joe Hector said.  “We believe that going to The Bahamas will help to expand the tournament and introduce this type of fishing to the masses.  Taking the tournament to The Bahamas, means taking it to a place, that has the best fishing in the world.”

“Working with The Bahamas will make a great marriage.  We Feel that coupled with The Islands Of The Bahamas, Extreme Kayak can become the biggest and best offshore Kayak Fishing Tournament in the world.” the organizer said.

Mr. Earl Miller, General Manager, Bahamas Ministry of Tourism’s Vertical Markets, also expressed excitement at the proposed venture.  “Bahamas Ministry of Tourism’s Vertical Markets Department is always looking for new water sports to add to our overall initiatives.”

Miller also noted that fishing for Big Game in The Bahamas is normally a very expensive venture, when one takes into consideration the funds needed for chartering a sport fishing boat or making the crossing in one’s own boat. Fishing on a kayak, he said, can greatly boost Bahamas tourism figures, as it makes the sport of Big Game fishing more accessible and affordable and thus will attract larger numbers of fishermen.

(Atlanta, Georgia) The Mayor of Atlanta Kasim Reed took a few minutes from running the city on Tuesday, May 28, 2013 to meet with Caribbean delegates, inclusive of the #Bahamas40Atl cast members, Miss Universe Bahamas Celeste Marshall, Rake ‘n’ Scrape artist Stilleet, and from the islands of Trinidad and Tobago, soca artist Jah Bami.

The Mayor, admitted to having a special love for Paradise Island, has vacationed in The Bahamas for about 15 years.

“I expect my next trip there will be in the next 90 days,” he revealed.

Candace Byrd, Mayor Chief of Staff and Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed welcome the cast and crew of #Bahamas40Atl

Marshall, encouraged the Mayor to visit other areas of The Bahamas and gave him an idea of some of the best places to visit and tips on where to sample the best foods. Stilleet also presented him with small tokens of The Bahamas including a copy of his Rake ‘n’ Scrape CD. In turn, the Mayor gifted Marshall with a crystal paperweight, bearing the seal of the city, a phoenix, representing Atlanta’s rise from the ashes after physically being burned down during the American Civil War.

“We have a special relationship with The Bahamas - a long standing relationship,” said the Mayor. “So having Miss Universe Bahamas here today was very special. And also that she was so gracious to serve as the grand marshal of one our very important festivals [Atlanta Caribbean Carnival] so I am glad she had the time to come by and say hello and to allow me to express my appreciation personally from the people of the city of Atlanta, for her time and her talents. I’m only looking forward to see where her star goes next because I believe this is just the beginning for her and her future is without limit.”

Look to the Sky (Lyrics)

There are times we reach the light,
There are times we loose the fight.
There are times we're full of fright,
And all the hope has died.
There are times when we are strong,
Times when we are wrong.
Can't find where we belong,
Unprepared to face the storm.
There are times we need to cry,
Because it hurts so much inside.
Somebody dared to cross the line,
Once bitten, forever shy.
There are times the world seems cold,
And there's a time when we grow old.
Half the story is always told,
While the other remains unknown.

Chorus:
And we look to the sky,
Will we recover before we die?
Is there a heaven floating somewhere nearby?
Or is it just another lie?

Second Verse:

There are times we need to wait,
Times when we're too late.
There are times when one mistake is the author of our fate.
There are times we loose someone,
Every now and then, we come undone;
Our words shoot just like a gun, aiming at anyone.
There are times we understand,
At times we'll need a hand.
So many dreams lost in the sand,
Cause we didn't have a plan.
There are times when we change,
But everyone thinks we're still the same.
Life is not a children's game,
When we fall, we feel the pain.

Bridge:

Someday we will win again.
There won't be a bitter end.

Renown Musicians On Board To Raise Funds For Bahamas Music Conservatory and Bahamian Teen Singer Through Anuschka Wright’s Jazz In Bloom Concert

By Arthia Nixon The Ambassador Agency, for Jazz In Bloom

(Nassau, The Bahamas)... As the countdown for Anuschka Wright’s Jazz In Bloom concert approaches, a slew of musicians and sponsors are confirming their commitment to helping her on her journey to raise funds for school, the Bahamas Music Conservatory and Michael Taylor, a 13 year-old travelling abroad for a singing competition. The British Colonial Hilton Hotel, BahamasLocal.com, Burns House Limited and Fine Threads are officially onboard to help Wright achieve her goals.  Anuschka also has the support of partners like Bahamas Weekly, Expats in the Bahamas, The Ambassador Agency, Bahamas at Sunrise, eLife and Nu Woman as well as others who are helping to spread the word about this new phenomenon called “Jazz In Bloom”.

“The event is set for June 16, 2013,” recalled Ida Butler, Anuschka’s mother and co-organizer of the concert. “There are several major names in jazz that will be making an appearance but overall, it’s just amazing to see how far Anuschka has come in bringing this project to fruition.”

Anuschka Wright officially revealed who will be taking part in her concert which will take place at the British Colonial Hilton Hotel on Father’s Day.

“Yes, Adrian D’Aguilar is confirmed to perform at Jazz In Bloom,” she confirmed what had been speculated in the local music industry when she announced plans to hold a concert. “He is truly a pioneer in jazz in The Bahamas and he left a mark at Berklee College of Music and was actually named the Most Outstanding Bassist when he graduated the Musicians Institute in Hollywood. Most people know him from the band Jazz Etc, but Mr. D’Aguilar has worked with the likes of The Platters, the Mighty Sparrow and as an arranger for shows like Malcolm in the Middle and The Distinguished Gentleman starring Eddie Murphy. He is also my musical mentor.”

Los Angeles drummer/percussionist Tina Raymond is also slated to make an appearance, Wright confirmed. Tina is not only experienced in her craft but also holds a BA in music and a MA in jazz studies.

“I am also excited to announce that Christian Sands, who at 20 was nominated for Best Latin Jazz Piano solo and Best Latin Jazz Album at the GRAMMYs will also be joining Jazz in Bloom,” beamed Wright. “I’m very grateful they are able to participate in my debut headlining event.”

Also taking center stage is another Bahamian jazz legend, Ralph Munnings whose fixture on the local jazz scene began with his days at the historic Cat & Fiddle. As a member of a well known Bahamian musical family, Munnings quickly rose to the top nationally before travelling abroad with the likes of Nat King Cole, Dinah Washington, Sam and Dave and Harry Belafonte.

“I’m also pleased to announce that two young Bahamian vocalists will be give stunning renditions in the person of Osano Neely and Josh Lynes,” added Wright. “Osano has been a child prodigy ever since his days with the National Children’s Choir of The Bahamas and is now a force to be reckoned with, collaborating with some of the nation’s top singers and performing internationally.

Josh on the other hand has strong roots in gospel but his signature voice is finding its place into R&B and jazz. All in all, I am just honored and blessed that they have all joined me in this venture.”

3rd Annual Abaco Kayak Challenge 2013

$

The Abaco Cancer Society and Friends of the Environment are working together to present Abaco's third annual Kayak Challenge on Saturday, November 9th at Pete’s Pub & Gallery in Little Harbour, Abaco.  Based on the first year’s success with more than 50 paddlers participating in inclement weather and an even more successful second year with 80 paddlers, both organizations are hopeful that The Kayak Challenge will continue to grow in 2013.

One of our focuses this year will be to try and ensure a higher presence of paddlers from other islands.  To this end, we have managed to secure a commitment from Bahamas Ferries to run the ferry service from Nassau to Sandy Point, Abaco to accommodate the paddlers.  There will be a discount of 25% per person and 20% per vehicle.  However, the catch is that they will require a minimum of 6 vehicles and at least 40 individuals.  We must have the minimum requirement by October 1st.  So, advance registration is a must!  We are also happy to assist with queries regarding accommodation and will assist with transport of crafts to Little Harbour.

Any craft you can paddle will be welcome, including kayaks, paddle boards and canoes - just no engines!  There will be 3 courses to choose from: 3 miles, 8 miles, or 15 miles that will take paddlers into and through the scenic tidal creeks of the Bight of Old Robinson, which is included in the proposed East Abaco Creeks National Park. Support boats will be on hand to assist paddlers, make sure they stay on course and provide water and snacks.  Paddlers will be welcomed back with a beach party at Pete’s Pub featuring a local band.  FRIENDS and the Abaco Cancer Society are seeking business sponsors to support the event. If you are interested, please contact sasha.fair@gmail.com

More information about the event is available on the Friends of the Environment's website: www.FriendsoftheEnvironment.org, on the Friends of the Environment’s Facebook Page or under the facebook event 3rd Annual Kayak Challenge.
