IN THE third staging of the mother and child exhibit by Jessica Colebrooke and 8-year old daughter Erin, the pair expanded on their iconic interpretation of a mother and child to reflect elements of the Bahamas’ African past. The “New Direction” show that opened at Hillside House Gallery on Saturday, featured life-size African sculptures as well as tile murals featuring the conventional mother and child theme.

4th Annual Central Abaco Lionfish Derby - June 15th, 2013

Central Abaco Lionfish Derby 2013

Friends of the Environment is hosting its fourth annual Lionfish Derby in Marsh Harbour, Abaco at the Marsh Harbour Marina and Jib Room on Saturday June 15th.  Lionfish have become a major threat to the marine resources in the Bahamas. Although this fish is here to stay, derbies such as this one are a way to help maintain local populations and generate awareness about this voracious predator.

The event will commence on Friday June 14th, 5-7pm with the Captain’s Meeting and Late Registration.  The All Day Derby will start at Sunrise and end at 4pm with the Awards and Lionfish Tasting starting at 6:30pm.

The prizes are:
1st Prize $1,500
2nd Prize $1,000
3rd Prize $500

There will also be additional prizes for largest and smallest lionfish, plus $1 per lionfish up to 100 fish for 4th place and below!  There is a maximum of 4 people per boat.  All prizes are being donated by our sponsors: Marsh Harbour Exporters and Importers, Bahamas Marine Exporters Association and Tropic Seafood.

Free Registration and Everyone Wins Something! For registration forms please  visit www.FriendsoftheEnvironment.org or contact Friends of the Environment: (242) 367-2721 or info@friendsoftheenvironment.org

For those who are not going to be here for the derby there’s another option. The Fish House in Marsh Harbour is taking lionfish on a daily basis as people catch them. They are keeping track each times someone drops off lionfish and whoever catches the most between now and the derby wins $1,000!

Each female lionfish has the ability to produce up to one million eggs each year so hypothetically speaking, if fifty percent of the total catch from this derby were female, participants of the derby eliminated over 1 billion lionfish eggs from Abaco’s waters in one day! Derbies can make an impact on local populations but everyone can help control the lionfish invasion! Catch 'em, Clean 'em, Eat 'em!!

Miss Universe Bahamas 2012, Celeste Marshall is grand marshal
at Atlanta Caribbean Carnival

By #Bahamas40Atl Media Team

(Atlanta, Georgia) The sounds of rake ‘n’ scrape, the beauty of the islands and  the elegance of Miss Universe Bahamas,  will be captured this spring  when a group of young Bahamians joined by a representative from The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism tour Georgia and North Florida for #Bahamas40Atl.

The cultural  and educational campaign will also feature two American-based Bahamian professionals, crew for two reality project, a news team documenting  prominent spots at the Atlanta Caribbean Carnival, Caribbean Unity Festival and African heritage festival with a Loyalist connection.

Highlights of #Bahamas40Atl reality project will include Miss Universe Bahamas 2012 Celeste Marshall featured Grand Marshal of the 25th Annual Atlanta Caribbean Carnival as well as cast participation  in several major events. A “Bahama Fete” is planned for May 23rd, featuring  Da Lioness and Rake ‘n’ Scrape general Stilleet.  Guests will dine on traditional  cuisine prepared by Bahamian Chef Daron Wilson. The  Master of ceremony for the Bahamas  Atlanta Caribbean Carnival  kick off event Tino Caribbean of Freeport.

“After confirming that the Atlanta Caribbean Carnival was allowing Miss Universe Bahamas to be co-grand marshal in commemoration of our 40th year of Independence, I contacted Africa Allah who came up with the concept of #Bahamas40Atl” said Atlanta Caribbean Carnival media team member Arthia Nixon, formerly of Eleuthera. “It went from us [The Bahamas] having no representation during Carnival, to having a multi-city tour from Atlanta to Jacksonville. I was especially excited when I was allowed to expand my scheduled appearance as Georgia and Caribbean editor with The Florida and Georgia Star at the African Heritage Festival in South Georgia, to include the entire cast, plus a performance from Stilleet. I think that is going to be really important for us to attend that event, as the Gullah Geechees from Africa were brought to the area as slaves and sold in Georgia and the Carolinas, the latter of which ended up in The Bahamas via The Loyalists.  Attendees will be in for a treat to see the connections of our dialects, songs and other traditions just as I encountered when I first went there.”

“#Bahamas40ATL is a campaign created to promote the celebration of the Bahamas’ 40th Independence during the Atlanta 25th Annual Caribbean Carnival Memorial weekend, May 22-27, 2013,” explained Africa Allah, Co-Founder DistinctiveImpression Multimedia Group, Inc. “Shooting will begin May, 22, 2013, upon the arrival of Miss Universe Bahamas in Atlanta, GA, and end on June 5, 2013, upon her departure. The reality show will be produced by JEM Music Group and aired on various cable channels internationally.  The show will examine the relationship between Caribbean, Caribbean American and African-American culture. The central theme of the show will be the #Bahamas40ATL project as the Bahamian subjects, Miss Universe Bahamas, Celeste Marshall; Rake n Scrape Artist, Stileet; Freeport DJ, Da Lioness; and Campari Caribbean Poster Girl Search reality star, Tommi Culmer,   interact and experience both Caribbean American and African American festivities from Atlanta, GA to Jacksonville, FL.”

She added that DIRadioCast New Media will document the trip for new and social media outlets, allowing supporters to follow the action in real time. The project is supported by the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism and its Entertainment Department. Details on activities and events can be found on Bahamas.com, CelseteM242.com or DIRadioCast.com. Summer is pretty much here which means it’s time for some awesome, dancey, summery-sounding music. We’ve found exactly that in the songs of Angelique Sabrina, the fifteen-year-old that’s been dubbed the next Rihanna. Sure, Angelique and Rihanna are both from the Caribbean, but if you’re comparing their music, Angelique’s more relates to “Pon De Replay” or “Rude Boy” than “Love The Way You Lie.” Angelique’s songs are fun and make you wish you were out on a beach, preferable in The Bahamas, where Angelique’s from.
