By Samuel Oakford

As diplomats gather at the United Nations in New York this week to consider the future of global drug policy, one Portuguese official, João Goulão, will likely command attention that far outstrips his country's influence in practically any other area. That's because 16 years ago, Portugal took a leap and decriminalized the possession of all drugs — everything from marijuana to heroin. By most measures, the move has paid off.  Read more >>

This year FRIENDS celebrates 30 years of environmental education and conservation. The year started off with ASAC and learning about the amazing research happening in Abaco, Plymouth University filling the Kenyon Centre, and rebooking for the next two years, and sighting a rare sawfish on a field trip to Cross Harbour. Come by and see the re-articulation of a false killer whale take shape on the lab porch of the Kenyon Centre, and visit the only Natural History Museum in The Bahamas at the entrance of the offices. In the midst of all this excitement school visits, field trips and after school clubs continue, not to mention two successful Reef Ball fundraising events. All of this takes a lot of team work! To everyone on this team: all the donors, volunteers, board members, and staff of FRIENDS a great big Thank You. I am proud to be a part of this team that is educating and creating awareness that brings environmental conservation to Abaco.

Education Update

School field trips are back!

Schools are back in full swing for the semester, which means so are our field trips! This month, we hosted field trips with Hope Town School and Angel's Academy. We took both schools out in the mangrove ecosystem where students were able to have a hands-on experience walking through the mangroves. At the end of the field trips, we incorporated a tour of the new Natural History Museum at the FRIENDS office. We are excited to host more field trips for schools around Abaco in the upcoming month!

Whale Project Begins

stranded false killer whale, and bones

This month, FRIENDS started the process of re-articulating the recovered bones of a false killer whale which stranded dead on Duck Cay, off of Cherokee Sound, back in February 2017. Our partners from the Bahamas Marine Mammal Research Organisation (BMMRO) responded to the stranding, collected data on the whale and buried the bones for future research. The bones were recovered in December 2017, cleaned of leftover tissue, and placed in converted fish traps in a sheltered mangrove creek to further help the cleaning process. Finally, the bones were transported to FRIENDS where we created a 10% hydrogen peroxide solution to dip the bones in, then they were laid in the sun for bleaching. We welcomed Albert Shepard (former curator of The Whale Museum in Friday Harbour, WA) who is sharing his knowledge of past re-articulation projects. The skeleton will be displayed on the porch of the Frank Kenyon Research Centre.

false killer whale rearticulation
We've had an amazing group of volunteers from the beginning of this project, and we couldn't have gotten this far without them! Thank you to all who have taken their time to help with this project in any way that they can. In addition to volunteers, we've also hosted two school groups so far. They were given a presentation on false killer whales and marine mammals, and were able to see the progress of the skeleton at the centre. We have ALL learned so much during this project and are grateful for this opportunity to contribute to science!

Long Bay School and false killer whale
Upper high school students from Long Bay School showed great interest in the project. Agape Christian School 5th grade students also visited the centre to learn about false killer whales.

Kenyon Centre Vision:

REEF BALL FUNDRAISERS

This month, FRIENDS celebrated its 30th anniversary at the Reef Ball, first in Hope Town on Feb. 10th and again in Marsh Harbour on Feb. 24th. A delicious dinner, silent and live auction, and live music by Uppercut 242 from Grand Bahama made both of these events unforgettable! Thank you to everyone who showed us support for these events - whether it was contributing to our auction or dancing the night away with us. Your support at these events is what helps make our education program possible and gives us encouragement. These events could not have been made possible without our hosts: The Abaco Inn & The Jib Room, the Board of FRIENDS, and dedicated Reef Ball volunteers.

Thinking about change
Netica “Nettie” Symonette at the opening of “Medium: Practices and Routes of Spirituality and Mysticism” which will be on view at the NAGB through March 11, 2018.

By Ian Bethell-Bennett

Over the last few weeks we have been journeying through “Medium: Practices and Routes of Spirituality and Mysticism” and discussing linkages with the upcoming show “We Suffer To Remain”, an international collaboration between the British Council and The National Art Gallery of The Bahamas. Writing this piece from Dubai at the Chamber of Commerce conference for Latin America and preparing for Expo 2020, the polemics of culture become more clearly abstracted.

So much of our culture and life resides beneath the surface. From time to time it surfaces to be revealed in stunning works of art, vibrant crafts, suggestive and politically critical music, or just fried into a fried-dry piece of chicken. We overlook that we exist in culture and that our culture dictates how we think about who we are and how we respond to a crisis. Read more >>

History abounds here, an island where time itself comes in search of adventure.

It’s equal parts island and small town, blessed with remarkable natural beauty but not lacking in personality.

This is Bimini and the Bimini Big Game Club, one of the Caribbean’s truly legendary hotels.

The club first opened its doors in 1936, the brainchild of Nassau’s Neville Stuart, a haven for adventurers and big game fishermen and even, for a few days in 1968, the Bahamian home of Dr Marthin Luther King Jr (he stayed in Cottage Number 3).  Read more >>

Nomanique Bain

It’s Never Too Late to Follow Your Dreams

From her days as a little girl, Nomanique Bain always had a passion for all things beauty. That passion followed her through years of completing a Bachelor’s degree in Accounts to the day she enrolled at the Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI) to pursue her studies in Cosmetology.

Nomanique’s father convinced her that with a degree in Accounts, she would always be able to find employment. Little did he know, Nomanique had a plan of her own. She knew that in the end, it would all be for beauty. She considered the fact that with this degree she would learn how to manage her finances in her own salon – which has proven to be correct.

This young woman began her studies at BTVI in the spring of 2016, where she learned many invaluable lessons. The most important of these being handling challenges with patience, remaining humble, showing perseverance and being consistent. All of which she still applies in her professional life.

“My education at BTVI has helped to advance my career by increasing the knowledge I have about my trade. This has made me more confident when providing services for my clients and… has improved the quality of service I provide from start to finish,” said Nomanique.

Nomanique has no regrets about her decision to join the beauty industry. In fact, she is happy to reap the rewards of such a profitable career. She has been the proud owner of Skyline Designs for the past three years and plans to take her career even further.

“As an adult, I’ve noticed how lucrative the beauty industry is and recognized the possibilities to travel and network with others in various fields; this sealed my decision to be a beautician,” said the entrepreneur.

Working in the beauty industry allows Nomanique to freely express her creativity without restriction. She considers herself to be an artist in her own right.
The entrepreneur plans to further her studies at BTVI to obtain her goal of becoming a well-rounded Cosmetologist.

“In the future, I plan to take up the Face Care and Makeup Application course. I believe beauty should be all around: hair, skin and nails.  I would want my clients to have the option of receiving all of those services when they come to Skyline Designs,” said the businesswoman.

Skyline Designs is the official hair styling team for the Miss University of The Bahamas and Miss World Bahamas 2018 pageants.

Meanwhile, fellow entrepreneur and owner of LucyLu Beauty, Lucena Sawyer is also making waves in the beauty industry as a hair stylist and makeup artist. She has been the owner of LucyLu Beauty for the past seven years.

Lucena, better known as LucyLu, also grew up loving all things beauty, but it was not her first career choice. She too pictured herself with a career in the finance industry. In fact, she began working in finance straight out of high school. Fortunately for her, she knew that was not her passion. She needed a career that was exciting and would make her enjoy going to work.

“I had come to the realization that I was better at working with my hands. It only made sense to try my hand at something that I had always loved doing, and that was (working) in the beauty field,” said the BTVI graduate.

As a self-taught beautician, there were certain aspects of hair care and hair styling that LucyLu knew she could not teach herself. She spent a lot of her time watching tutorials online and learning from other stylists, but it was not enough for her. She needed an environment where she was guaranteed to perfect her skills. Hence, she enrolled at BTVI in spring 2016.

LucyLu’s education at BTVI helped her become more confident in herself as a hairstylist and has extended her knowledge of cosmetology.

“I needed to learn the basics, so I bit the bullet and returned to school. That was the best decision I made for my career. Everything that I had learned on my own started to make sense with the education I gained from my studies. It was like puzzle pieces; school was the final piece I needed,” said LucyLu.

Had LucyLu not made the decision to follow her dreams, she says she probably would have still been fighting her way through the corporate world. She is glad she got out when she did and she now has a career that allows her to fully express herself like the artist she is.

She is considering returning to BTVI as soon as she decides which trade she wants to pursue next.
These successful beauty professionals both received diplomas in Cosmetology from BTVI in May 2017 and completed the two-and-a-half year program within 18 months, proving that nothing can stop a person with a dream and the drive to realize it.
