Kids get our Tourism why don't the Adults

Dear Readers,

On Tuesday I was privileged to attend the Ministry of Grand Bahama's Junior Minister speech competition (my daughter was a contestant).  Eleven students were selected to the second round, with 10 of them being girls and one lone young man.  Their topic was:  The Bahamas, a Paradise for Health and Wellness Tourism.

Each speech was 5-7minutes long.  As I sat there and listened I was so pleased to hear each student list the many assets of our country.  They also listed current medical facilities that possible tourists could go to now to have that 'vacation surgery' for cosmetic, replacement surgery and more.   They also noted the multitude of bush medicines that we have in our country that can help improve their quest for health and longevity, and they all mentioned the healing power of the; Sun, Sea and Sand.

Each student's speech was vibrant, well researched and presented in fun and unique ways.  As a marketer I was impressed.  According to their speeches our tourism sector brings in 60% of our GDP and affects everyone in our country.  Medical tourism in a 1.4 Million Dollar business in the U.S and is expected to gross 439 Billion around the world, with a 25% increase this year. So, it seems like a business we need to remain in.

The speeches all highlighted the friendliness of our people which is something I would agree with, but we both would note it does not always come across in our customer service.  As these young teenagers expressed the unlimited possibilities the health market could bring to our country, they were smart enough to note that we have to become proficient in the services but most importantly give good customer service.

As the largest economic factor in our country, mediocre tourism will not keep us in the game - and these kids got that.  I just wish the adults that are in this field would too.  We must outshine our competition, we must go above and beyond the call of duty.  Sun, sea and sand will not keep them returning - only our people can.

PM hails Sir Durward Knowles as 'great Bahamian patriot'
Prime Minister, Dr. the Hon. Hubert A. Minnis on Monday hailed the late Sir Durward Randolph "Sea Wolf" Knowles as a great Bahamian patriot.
Prime Minister Minnis said Sir Durward's legacy represents the very best of what the Commonwealth of The Bahamas is as a country.
Addressing mourners attending Sir Durward's funeral service held at Ebenezer Methodist Church, East Shirley Street, Prime Minister Minnis said the legendary sailor, Olympian, businessman and philanthropist was a "great Bahamian who was driven by the stars and the call to service."Read More
FNM trying to muzzle freedom of expression over immigration abuses
I hereby publicly condemn Attorney General Carl Bethel in strongest possible terms for his cowardly and shameful attempt to muzzle freedom of expression and intimidate activists seeking to educate the public about their rights.
His complaints about a recent publication by Rights Bahamas are petty, irrelevant and totally lacking in merit; meanwhile, his threatening language toward human rights defenders should be considered highly dangerous by all Bahamians who defend democracy and fundamental rights. Read More
Government must terminate Fraudulent Heads of Agreement
For weeks now, the Oban Energies melodrama has played out in the media. Each week, new revelations have been unearthed tearing away at the credibility of both the company and more importantly, this inept Minnis administration, which failed on multiple fronts to maintain the confidence of the Bahamian people in this and future foreign direct investments. Rather than attempting to adequately address the lingering concerns of environmentalists and the wider population, the Prime Minister and his cabinet have often become defensive with members of the press and others who have dared to suggest that the deal in question is not in the best Interest of the people of the Bahamas. Huge Clifton Pier oil leak a result of government neglect
Yet another large and dangerous oil leak from the Clifton Pier Power Station is causing critical damage to the surrounding marine environment.
The oil slick is so vast that it can be clearly spotted from the air - as can the government's woefully inadequate efforts at containment. It is clear that the rudimentary methods employed by the BEC to try and hold back these toxic slicks, which emanate from the facility on a regular basis, are deplorably ineffective.Read More

FEBRUARY 2018 UPDATE

Another very quiet & smooth run. Again, a lovely addition to the bags were freshly baked loaves of bread from from Natalie's group, from Don and from Bobby Miller's family.

Manno: totally blind and lives alone in a little wooden shack in Eight Mile Rock, suffered severely during hurricane Matthew when the side of his hut blew away and he was crawling about in the open looking for pieces of wood to re-secure his wall in the middle of the raging storm.

Manno has been a Crossreach recipient long before the present team took over 8 years ago. He always welcome everyone with a smile and a greeting and likes to know who is present.
REFRIGERATION: We have requests from 2 of our recipients for a fridge. Anastacia needs to
keep her insulin shots cool, and Carlos needs to keep drinks and food cool. Neither are able to get electricity connected as they can't get a certificate of occupancy for their below-par living quarters. We have researched the possibility of solar power which is too costly and too exposed to theft. Does anyone know of the existence of some kind of fridge that runs on gas or propane?

WARNING: We do get our recipients occasionally asking for money. Whenever possible, please avoid handing over any cash. We have found, in the past , that once cash is given, they rarely look to see what is in the bag or appreciate its contents, just looking for more cash.

COIN BOX: AGAIN, many thanks for  the coins in the coin box and the bin....another $200 was deposited this week!

CROSSREACH BIN: is beginning to receive donations...keep it up, please. Also, we are always asked for disposable diapers. Huggies size 6 little movers are for Leonie's 2 year-old daughter with downs syndrome and for 12 year-old Mario, Nekemea's son amongst others.

MENTORSHIP is not a new term in the corporate environment. For centuries we have had formal and informal mentors teaching, training and preparing the next generation of leaders. Mentorship is typically defined as the relationship in which a more experienced or knowledgeable person helps to guide someone who is considerably less so.

In the traditional sense it is an employee training system under which a mentor is assigned to act as an advisor, counsellor or guide to a junior or trainee. The mentor is responsible for providing support to, and feedback on, the individual in his or her charge. Many companies have developed systematic and structured mentorship programmes, where the culture is so well shaped that senior leaders understand their primary role to be the development of new and emerging leaders.

This article focuses on the benefits every company, irrespective of its size, will enjoy by developing a mentorship system. Here are the key reasons:  Read more >>

‘Could these be the ramblings of a nutcase or could this seemingly far-fetched story about “lost children” actually be true?

‘Mira Cullen, an attractive young doctor and psychic, meets old, sick, occasionally delusional Stefanie Brussels. Stefanie claims to know otherwise unheard-of facts as related to the shocking catastrophe of long ago where so many had perished, but no one in their right mind believes her. She also mentions an artifact in her possession that holds “special powers”. Will Mira take anything she says seriously and if she doesn't, what is bound to be the outcome?’

Enjoy!

Best wishes,

It’s been forever since I put my blog’s spotlight on someone I wanted to introduce y’all to. But I recently connected with a girl boss, a wife, a mother, an entrepreneur and now blogger whose go-getter spirit I admire and respect!

I love a hustler!

I love people who go after the things they want to do and be without hesitation and without fear. I love people who aren’t afraid to tap into arenas and careers that are the total opposite of everything they’ve ever done!

In today’s world of sliding in the DMs, Shekia Danielle is proof that the DM you send and/or receive could either be used to start a conversation on a business and career opportunity or mindless conversation.

She chose the former.  Read more >>

It's official. The Bahamas Technical & Vocational Institute (BTVI) President Dr. Robert Robertson (l) and Bethune Cookman University’s Senior Advisor to the President for Institutional Effectiveness and Compliance, Dr. Narendra Patel (r) recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding, as members of the university’s Bahamian Students Association look on.  Photos: Bethune Cookman University

Bethune-Cookman University (B-CU) and the Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI) recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), paving the way for BTVI students who wish to earn Bachelor’s degrees in Computer Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) disciplines.

B-CU continues to expand its global footprint in The Bahamas. In July 2017, the university was accredited by the National Accreditation and Equivalency Council of the Bahamas (NAECOB) to offer online courses, degree programs and have a physical location.

The MOU with BTVI was signed on the Bethune-Cookman University campus in Daytona Beach, Florida. B-CU is one of three private, historically black colleges in Florida.

BTVI’s President, Dr. Robert W, Robertson, noted that the agreement widens the options for BTVI’s students seeking to smoothly matriculate into the institution.

“The agreement provides BTVI students with scholarship options at Bethune Cookman, notably in STEM.  We are excited to be able to work with a high quality institution such as B-CU. Some of the key areas being considered for collaboration between the two schools include Computer Technology, Environmental Management, Health Services and Business,” said Dr. Robertson.

BTVI’s President, Dr. Robert Robertson and B-CU’s Senior Advisor to the President for Institutional Effectiveness and Compliance, Dr. Narendra Patel, exchange institutional gifts.

B-CU’s Senior Advisor to the President for Institutional Effectiveness and Compliance, Dr. Narendra Patel stated that B-CU has a long tradition of training Bahamian students and he was particularly pleased that the agreement contains a scholarship for BTVI transfer students. He noted that the benefits to students reflect the commitment that B-CU has to furthering its partnership with BTVI.

Also present were some members of the university’s faculty and administrative staff, in addition to some members of the Bahamian Students Association, who presented Dr. Robertson with an honorary medallion to commemorate the event.
