 The Misconception About Feminism

Dear Readers,

I'm often very bewildered at the ignorance of Bahamian society surrounding the subject of "feminism". It seems that some individuals simply detest what the movement represents and Bahamian men in particular, have misconstrued the topic as solely to mean "women who don't need a man".
In order to understand what a 'feminist' is, we must first understand what the word actually means. The Oxford Dictionary defines feminism as "the theory of the political, economic and social equality of the sexes."  This definition in its entirety states that feminism is meant to uplift and support women as equals in every aspect of society.
For some reason though it seems that some among us have observed that men supporting feminism is somehow wrong or disgusting. This idea is based on the male chauvinistic belief that a woman should never rise above a man; nor can she be equal to him in any way.
The real question is though, Does the concept of a woman being equal to a man somehow make men feel less than women? And why do some men feel that way?
A few days ago I ordered a matching t-shirt set for myself and my daughter. The word "Feminist" is printed on the front of the T-shirt. I decided to wear my shirt the other day and a middle-aged man at the gas station shouted "Oh so you don't need a man?!" I asked him what he meant, and his response was "...you are one of those women who thinks she better than man that's why you all fall the way you do; trying to go against what God intended!"
Huh? When did supporting political, economic and social equality become equivalent to going against Gods plan? Saying that I want equality and deserve the right to be treated equally to my male counterparts, suddenly disturbs the divine order that God created? I think not!

Women in The Bahamas do not have LEGAL equal rights, we are second-class citizens in our homes without the rights to pass on our citizenship to the children whom we CARRY and BIRTH, nor are we allowed to pass citizenshsip on to our foreign spouses in the same way that men are. For women working in male dominated fields and offices,  Sexual Harrassment, Discrimination and Blatant Sexism are often par for the course and translate into less opportunities for career advancement. For lots of women aspiring to improve their lot in life, "feminism" breaks the traditional rule or law, and turns male dominance into a thing of the past. Was this man telling me that my wanting to make a difference in society weather it is socially, economically or politically and as women is an affront to GOD? Is he saying that I can't?  Is he implying that I as a woman, do not deserve the right to have a seat at the table?
The time has come for mothers to begin raising their CHILDREN to believe and understand that equality is NOT a threat, but an inalienable RIGHT! Despite what some people think, it is okay to question a man, when the answer does not seem to fit the right way in a sentence. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie said it best "We teach girls to shrink themselves, to make themselves smaller, we say to girls "You can have ambition but not too much, you should aim to be successful, but not too successful, otherwise you will threaten the man"
Why are we programming our Bahamian women to be imprisoned by mental slavery? Mothers, you have a responsibility to your daughters. You must teach them to be strong, teach them to be educated, teach them to stand up for their right to equality, teach them to be "feminists". Yes, feminists!
We also have to teach our SONS to see girls and women as their equals. As partners who must work together and NOT as someone to boss around, use or abuse.
Bahamian society needs strong women willing to look towards a future driven by respect and equality for all individuals. Please ladies and gentlemen, remember: "Feminism" is not a dirty word, it does not mean that you hate men, it simply means that you believe in equality; the same equality our nation builders have fought for over the decades. Feminism+ Feminist+ Strong Women = Equality.

High Schoolers Dive into Technology at BTVI

Young Kwsaind Turnquest made one of the best decisions when he decided to sacrifice his summer vacation to participate in the Information and Communication Technology Summer Youth Program at The Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI).

Kwsaind has always been a knowledge hungry student, and the ICT program is just one of those things that satisfy his appetite to learn.

“I’m excited to continue in this program because it is going to help me secure my future. It’s a part of achieving my career goal to become a Computer Engineer and Music Producer,” said the fifteen year old.

For this video game player, the most exciting part of the program so far has been learning how to make programs and video games. He most recently learned how to make his own music in the program and cannot wait to share his experience with family.

Fellow participant, Bria Hanna, has always been interested in technology and is excited that she has finally gotten the opportunity to learn more about it.

“I was hoping that I would be able to establish my future career while I’m still young and when I learned about this program I was like, ‘Wow, that’s it.’ What really excites me about the program is the hands-on approach. We’re not just sitting down watching videos; we’re actually getting to do things,” said the 14-year-old.

Bria has already begun sharing her experiences with her friends and is excited to go deeper into programming. Her goal is to become a lawyer, focusing on cybercrime cases.

Both participants plan to continue into one of BTVI’s associate of applied science degrees in the information technology field after high school – which they will be able to complete within a year, thanks to the ICT program.

Program Instructor, André Bethel helps two students.

The participants will conclude the face-to-face learning portion of the program on August 3, and continue into online learning for four weeks.

BTVI’s Chair of Information Technology, Anthony Ramtulla said earlier, “With this program, the seed will be planted for these young people to become the leading experts in Software Engineering, Network Engineering and Information Technology Management in the nation.”

Agreeing with him is BTVI’s Associate Vice President of the Northern Campus, Veronica Collie, who believes the program commenced at the right time.

“As Grand Bahama becomes a technical hub, we want the students leaving high school to be able to keep up with the changes. The ICT program is taking them in the right direction and preparing these young people for the job market when they graduate high school,” said Ms. Collie.

The students will sit their first international certification exam in August.

The three-year summer program – launched in partnership with the Ministry of Education and the Office of the Prime Minister – trains upcoming 10th graders in the modules of I.T. Fundamentals, Linux Unhatched, Introduction to Cyber Security, Python, JavaScript, professional performances and ethics.

There are 126 students presently enrolled in the program in New Providence. It is also being offered at BTVI’s Grand Bahama campus with 54 students.

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL - August 6, 2018 – Internationally known Bahamian religious leader, Bishop Neil Ellis, recently projected that The Bahamas could expect about 2,500 visitors to the country to attend the Global United Fellowship’s (GUF) 2019 convention scheduled to take place July 9th-12th at the Atlantis Resorts, Paradise Island, Nassau, Bahamas.

Bishop Ellis who as the leader of the International group is its Presiding Bishop, gave his projection in the wake of the organization’s recent, well attended, 2018 Convention in Greensboro, North, Carolina.

The GUF, a reportedly fast growing Christian organization, was formed five years ago, and currently has close to 1,200 churches affiliated from a variety of denominations.  The organization’s annual convention is titled “The Gathering” and this year’s event is said to have drawn an attendance of about 4,000 persons from across the U.S. and The Bahamas.

Director of Religious Market for The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism Mr. Linville Johnson, delivered greetings at the convention and spoke to the group on behalf of his country’s Minister of Tourism, the Honourable Dionisio D’Aguilar.  Mr. Johnson also invited and encouraged attendees to be a part of the “2019 Gathering” in The Bahamas.

  Sexual Harassment

Dear Readers,

As a follow up to last weeks article, we thought this editorial would  be a good  follow up to our feminism article.  Please note this is taken from The Nassau Guardian, August 8th, 2018 Religion: Let's Talk About It Section: Sexual Harassment by Barrington Brennen
Too often we hear of cases of sexual harassment in the work place. The workplace should be emotionally safe for both employees and employers. However, far too many people do not feel so safe on the job. There are countless reports of verbal and sometimes physical conflicts and intimidations. Perhaps the most insidious and common kind of problem on the job is sexual harassment. It is a problem that is very difficult, painful and oftentimes embarrassing to talk about. Too often, it remains unchallenged because of threats, shame, intimidation and severe abuse of power.

Sexual harassment is defined as "unsolicited physical contact and advances toward someone; a demand or request for sexual favors; sexually-colored remarks with colleagues on the job; showing pornography; and any other unwelcome physical, verbal or non-verbal conduct of a sexual nature". Read more
