The Atlantic slave trade had a negative impact on African societies and the long-term impoverishment of West Africa. For some it intensified effects already present among its rulers and kingdoms.

The slave trade's effect on African societies

The use of African slave labour was not new. The Spanish and Portuguese had been using African slaves since the 16th century. However, the Atlantic slave trade of the 18th century was a new kind of slavery and was on a scale much greater than ever before.

The implications of the slave trade included:   Read more >>

NEW WRITER’S GUIDE!

Hello Folks!

I am delighted to announce the release of my new writer’s guide “HOW TO BE THE BEST WRITER EVER!” - An informal guide and source of inspiration for new and not so new writers worldwide. This is available on Amazon as an e-book and in paperback.

Over a decade ago, one of my sons said to me: “Mum, you should share your writing experience with others. Give me some content and I’ll put a website up for you.”

I had been writing since the age of nine and trained as a newspaper reporter in my teens. My short stories have been published in “The Lady” magazine, London, England, and in “The Broadkill Review”, Delaware; my poetry has appeared in “Evergreen” magazine, U.K., and articles published in British and Bahamian publications. And I am also the author of several other books available at Amazon and other major online book retailers.

I threw some ideas together and sent them to my son. He uploaded them in sections on a website, and the seeds of a writer’s guide were planted. I had a button on the site for visitors to leave their email addresses if they wanted to be notified when the website content would be available in print.

My blog fayknowles.blogspot.com eventually replaced the writer’s website. However, I still had a subscribers' list of active or aspiring writers from the website who had been eagerly waiting for me to publish the promised writer’s guide.

Now, many years later, I delved back in my mind to all the writing experience and training that I’ve had over the years and wrote about it. I used the original information from the website as a foundation.

I wanted to help those who longed to write books, articles, short stories, poems or screenplays; and others whose writing career was going nowhere. My promise has been fulfilled with the publication of “HOW TO BE THE BEST WRITER EVER!" – It has come a long way since I first put a few tips online about writing!

Always wanted to write a book? Or are you a writer whose career is going nowhere?
This uplifting writer’s guide outlines the craft and how to become the best writer ever in fifteen straightforward and easy to understand chapters that enlighten and inform; inspire and encourage; educate and advise.

If you wish to be led and inspired to reach your highest writing potential, read “How to Be the Best Writer Ever!”

MORE LITERARY NEWS!

While writing, I’d like to share some more of my friend Tanya R. Taylor’s literary news. A bestselling author, Tanya writes in various genres including Paranormal Romance, Fantasy, Thrillers, Science-fiction, Mystery and Suspense.

She says: I used to love watching Paranormal Witness on the SYFY channel on Wednesday nights. Couldn't get enough of it as these were real-life accounts of paranormal/supernatural events that people from all walks of life allegedly experienced. It’s obvious that many people have a curiosity to what is unseen, whether we believe something more is really there or not. I have my reasons for gravitating toward this area with my own writing, although I write crime fiction, thrillers and have even penned a contemporary romance as well.

Tanya explains: “The word ‘paranormal’ is defined by dictionary.cambridge.org as: ‘All the things that are impossible to explain by known natural forces or by science.’ I love writing in this genre. It's exciting to write and I'm sure, to read - at least for fans of the genre.” Yes! Tanya’s books are really exciting to read!

Check out Tanya R. Taylor’s bestseller “10 Minutes before Sleeping”, which I highly recommend. It’s the powerful story of a young woman named Eva left on the doorstep of a neighbour as a child by her very own mother. She is abused, neglected, rejected and without a legal footing in the only place she knows as “home”. All the odds appear to be stacked against her and those looking from the outside in seriously wonder how one human being could be expected to battle such atrocities without making a fateful decision to end it all far quicker than it ever began.

BUY "10 MINUTES BEFORE SLEEPING" ON AMAZON HERE!
ALSO Tanya R. Taylor’s Four Book E-book Collection in her Cornelius Bestelling series is still available at a DISCOUNTED PRICE! The Cornelius Saga Series Box Set (Books 1 – 4): Exciting Ghost Stories & Haunted House Collection. A great package deal!

Escape to the exciting world of the Cullen family where there are very few “ordinary” days. Adventures, mysteries, ghosts, witches, artefacts and missing corpses are familiar territory! Watch Mira evolve from a curious teenager to a respected doctor, and her daughter Rosie, from an endearing six-year-old to a mature teenager. They share an amazing gift some people may love to have and others quietly thank their lucky stars that they don’t.

Once you meet the Cullens, they become dear to your heart and you’ll want to go on every adventure they will ever have. A sure classic.

AND my short story FUNNELS is still FREE on Amazon!

God’s Storehouse Over the Hill

Elder Minalee Hanchell and Bishop Walter Hanchell
By Hadassah Deleveaux (née Hall)

It’s located on a busy thoroughfare.  Often, traffic is backed up, so there is no missing the queue of people - whether standing in the blistering cold or the sweltering heat.  Some drivers stop at the two-storey building and unload their cargo, ranging from clothes and shoes to food or other basic necessities.  Others glance at the sight of people and turn their heads.  There are those who assume it could never happen to them.  They believe they would never be found waiting for a free meal.

On the inside are volunteers - those who give unselfishly to others in need.  There is a hustle and bustle, particularly during the 1 pm - 2:30 pm slot when lunch is available to whomever is not ashamed to join the line.

Photo: The Nassau Guardian

The volunteers inside are busy pouring drinks, cooking meals, dishing up plates of food to serve the poor who have come from near and far, inclusive of the immediate community - the inner city. And on a daily basis, approximately 300 people are fed; this includes the sick and 40 shut-ins within the over the hill area, whose meals are delivered.

No questions asked.  No need to explain.  Registration is not necessary.  If you are hungry, simply join the line. Come eat and drink.  And come, they do.  The homeless. The elderly. Children. The unemployed.  The troubled. The marginalized of society.

Located on Wulff Road in Nassau, Bahamas, Great Commission Ministries (GCM) was born nearly 31 years ago as a non-profit community-based outreach program. It is the vision of Bishop Walter Hanchell and his wife, Minalee Hanchell, who kept meeting people who were in need.  Serving those who are battling substance abuse to those who simply need shelter, Great Commission Ministries’ mission is, “To become a global movement of reconciliation, restoration, and hope for all persons affected by poverty, crime, drug abuse, broken relationships and the bondage of sin.”

Photo: The Bahama Journal

Great Commission Ministries’ services include, but are not limited to:

Food Bank and Feeding Centre
Clothing Centre
Emergency Shelter
Children’s Ministry
Teen Ministry
Empowerment Classes
Conflict avoidance and resolution therapy

According to Ms. Hanchell, it takes between $50,000 and $60,000 monthly to run the organization inclusive of food, operational expenses, electricity and rent among other things.

Photo: The Bahamas Weekly

“The greatest need is finances for operational expenses, food, especially meat. We need five cases of meat per day. There are times we have to say, ‘Come tomorrow.’ If there are no grocery packets, we give them a hot meal, or the emergency shelter might be full, but we contact someone else to help. We’ve also seen many lives turn around from drugs,” stated Ms. Hanchell.

“This is a lifestyle for us – helping others. Quitting is not an option. It is a passion of ours,” she added.

In fact, Bishop Hanchell was betowed with the 2018 Bahamian Icon Award for Humanitarianism. It was also announced by the Office of the Governor General that he is a  2018 National Honours Awardee and will become a Member of the Order of Merit as of October when the honour will be conferred.

Ms. Hanchell noted that some people may be surprised of who find themselves asking for a helping hand at the ministry.

“People from all over come, but some want a job after losing a job and do not want a hand out. Life has dealt them a blow,” said Ms. Hanchell.

“It’s a serious economic situation going on and the ministry feels the pinch. Some people who could contribute can’t do so anymore,” she added.

Despite the difficulties however, the husband and wife duo continue to press on as a place with open doors.

“While doing this, we try to preserve the dignity of those who come.  But for the grace of God, it could be more people,” she stated.

  The Grand Debate

Dear Readers,

This week, the government announced plans to purchase the Grand Lucayan Resort on Grand Bahama Island.

Once the deal is done, the government will likely spend somewhere in the vicinity of 100 million dollars to acquire, renovate, and market the property and get it back to its "fighting weight".

For Grand Bahamians, many of whom have already lived through a major hotel closure and felt the very REAL LIFE impact of that reality on the island and on their lives: this news was WELCOMED! Every resident of Freeport who remembers the vibrancy of the International Bazaar, which thrived when the Princess Towers (later renamed the Royal Oasis) was open, are understandably terrified that the Port Lucaya Marketplace which depends heavily on the Grand Lucayan property, could suffer a similar fate. In days of boom, the Port Lucaya marketplace was flooded with tourists and as a result, all of the nearby businesses flourished. Restaurants and Bars, Jewelry Stores, Clothing Stores, and of course Straw Vendors. In recent years, and in the wake of devastating hurricanes, the property has suffered and by extension so have the businesses, families and individuals who depend on it. For those persons, the government's announcement represents a glimmer of hope.

Not everyone sees it that way though. In fact, there has been so much opposition to the idea of the purchase. Government officials, opposition politicians, business people, everyone says the government has no business being in the hotel business; and perhaps they're right. But the question is: can the residents of Grand Bahama Island survive if history were to repeat itself? What are the alternatives?

At the heart of many of the issues surrounding the property has been contentions with the owners who seem unwilling to let the property go, while at the same time refusing to do what is necessary to make it a viable tourist attraction again. In fact, the country recently became aware of the dissolution of months and months of negotiations which fell apart with the Wynn Group because Hutchison refused to budge on some key issues. Clearly, investors need an owner they can play ball with.

Now, while he has yet to make his promised speech detailing the plan, the PM says the government intends to acquire it and then resell it to another buyer as soon as it can, which if done right, solves the big issue by hopefully putting the property in the hands of experienced hoteliers with a vested interest in seeing the property thrive.

That's the ideal situation, the proposed purchase could pose other issues. If mishandled, the government could very well plunge the national economy into a tailspin by increasing its expenses.

As the country waits to hear the full scope of the government's plans, I, like my friends and family in Freeport, can't help but feel hopeful. I'm optimistic that there is light at the end of this dark economic tunnel, and I'm praying that Grand Bahama comes out on the other side drenched in the magic which once gave the island its nickname!

LEADING Jamaican scientist Dr Henry Lowe is urging Bahamian officials - and those in the Caribbean - to liberalise cannabis for medical and scientific use to cement the region's stake in the industry.

Dr Lowe projected cannabis-based products will be imported to the country just like pharmaceutical drugs within the next two years, and is lobbying for regional cooperation to push back against developing countries from fully entering and dominating the market.

He argued political stigma around adult use should not stall research he believes will allow Caribbean states to benefit from standardising the cultural and traditional practices of plant or "bush" medicine.  Read more >>

 Poem by james julius catalyn
(Reflecting on his wishes)

He was born.

He knew who he was, where he came from, and where he was going.

He lived.

He made his contribution.

He said what he meant and meant what he said and was clearly understood.

He did the things in life that pleasured him.

He enjoyed life to the fullest.

He was at peace with himself and with his fellowman.

His one concern was that we love one another, even as Christ loved us.

He died.

He had no regrets.

He chose his favourite passages of scripture and some of his favourite hymns.

He did not wish an Obituary; neither did he wish an “As I Knew Him", nor "Tributes", nor "Precious Memories" at the back of the funeral booklet, nor a "Gathering" after the service.

You each knew him differently; you will each remember him differently.

In your hearts, remember him as you knew him.
