Kerima Smith - Educator

Although she now lives on the outskirts of town, for years Kerima Smith gave back to the over the hill community through tutoring.

“I just love dealing with children. I learned from my father, Khalid Abdul-Hadi. He made an impact on me back when we lived through Hospital Lane. Once you were a child, you were welcomed in our house,” said the educator.

As a Muslim, Kerima is no stranger to stares, criticism and misjudgment. Once some people see her wearing the hijab, it conjures up negative feelings of the Islamic world which worsened in the months after September 11th, 2001 and even during the Arab uprisings that spread across the Middle East in 2011.  Read more >>

Meacher Major brought the pain one last time and ended his storied boxing career with a knockout win in what he called a “homecoming” for himself, family, friends and supporters.

Major’s right hook to the body floored Martin Anderson of Jamaica and secured the knockout at the 2:10 mark in the third round in the main event of the “The Last Dance” at the CI Gibson Gymnasium on Saturday.

“In the first round I felt I had some good body shots early, so I thought I just had to take my time, pick the right shots rather than just going out there and trying to go all out and it would come naturally, and it did,” Major said. “I wanted to give him more, that’s why I decided to throw lighter punches in the earlier part of the rounds. He caught me with a few good shots, which I liked because I wanted the fans to see a good performance for the last time, before I hang up the gloves forever.”

Major and Anderson first faced each other in April 2016 at the Caribbean Showdown, hosted at the Kendal Isaacs Gymnasium. In a super featherweight main event, Major secured a second round TKO.

He concludes his professional career 24-6-1 (19 KOs).  Read more >>

Results of the CFATF MER reflected that the country received ‘largely compliant or compliant’ ratings in 18 of the 40 FATF Recommendations, while posting ‘partially compliant’ ratings in 21 FATF Recommendations and ‘non-compliant’ rating in one (1) FATF Recommendation.  Read more >>

Humanity has wiped out 60% of mammals, birds, fish and reptiles since 1970, leading the world’s foremost experts to warn that the annihilation of wildlife is now an emergency that threatens civilisation.

The new estimate of the massacre of wildlife is made in a major report produced by WWF and involving 59 scientists from across the globe. It finds that the vast and growing consumption of food and resources by the global population is destroying the web of life, billions of years in the making, upon which human society ultimately depends for clean air, water and everything else.  Read more >>

The Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI) recently received a generous donation of 13 desktops and 15 monitors to be used in its Student Resource Center.

Retired accountant, Robert V. Lotmore partnered with Custom Computers to make this donation in hopes that others will follow suit in investing in a BTVI education.

"When I became aware of BTVI's dire need for computers, I immediately decided to get involved, recognizing the importance of technology in today's education system. Further, I hope this donation helps to spur other individuals, organizations and companies to donate to this valuable institution," said Mr. Lotmore.

"I take this opportunity to encourage corporate Bahamas to invest in our people who are undertaking a technical and vocational education. The skills they will acquire are desperately needed in a modern, functioning society.  These students will graduate and eventually work on our vehicles and computers, and repair our light fixtures and our plumbing," he added.

Director of Custom Computers, Pia Farmer said the company understands that technology is a crucial component of the learning environment.

"We are proud to have once again partnered with BTVI as it continues to encourage members of our community to, 'Learn, Grown, Achieve,' by pursuing excellence in education," said Ms. Farmer.

"We congratulate the institute for providing the opportunity for students to improve their skills set by offering numerous options for academic growth and technical training," she added.

BTVI’s Associate Vice President of Fund Development, Alicia Thompson is thankful for donors like Mr. Lotmore and Custom Computers that continue to invest in BTVI and help the institution to effectively provide quality education.

“This donation by Mr. Lotmore and Custom Computers will now enable us to accommodate twice as many students in our Student Resource Center as we did previously. The use of technology is prominent on our campus and as we prepare our students to be globally competitive, computer access is of utmost importance,” said Ms. Thompson.

“While accessing a computer may be a small deal for some, we still have many students whose only access to a computer is in one of our labs. With our increase in enrolment, there is a corresponding need for additional computers. It is our hope that a lot more persons will follow the lead of Mr. Lotmore and Custom Computers and make donations to the BTVI,” she stated.

The UK has added the Bahamas to its money laundering watchlist, with the HM Treasury now requiring firms to put special procedures in place when dealing with Bahamian resident entities and clients.

The British government’s decision follows the recommendations of the international Financial Action Task Force. FATF rated the Bahamas’ money laundering regime as having “strategic deficiencies” that pose a risk to the international financial system.

Although the Bahamas has made a high-level political commitment to address these problems, it has not done so yet, the Paris-based body argued.  Read more >>
