Ocean Atlas - The world’s largest underwater sculpture is found just off the coast of Nassau.

Artist, photographer, naturalist, and diver Jason deCaires Taylor introduced his record-breaking public sculpture to the crystal Bahamian waters in 2014. Entitled Ocean Atlas, the installation encourages coral colonization and deters tourists from endangered reefs.

Forged from sustainable, pH-neutral materials designed to kickstart local coral growth, Ocean Atlas is a monumental public sculpture submerged five meters beneath the sea, and an environmental gesture intended to portray the positive potential of human interaction with the natural world.

Located off the west coast of New Providence in Nassau, Ocean Atlas is Taylor’s contemporary take on the ancient Greek myth of Atlas—a Titan condemned to carry the heavens on his back for eternity. Rather, Ocean Atlas, commissioned by BREEF (Bahamas Reef Environment Educational Foundation), is a young Bahamian girl “sustaining the ceiling of the ocean,” Taylor’s website explains, as “our oceans and coral reefs currently [face] collapse from numerous threats including overfishing, habitat loss, ocean acidification, global warming and water pollution…”  Read more >>

Margaritaville — both a name and a laidback feel at tourist venues from New York to Costa Rica derived from Jimmy Buffett’s 1977 hit song — is accused of breaching an agreement for the exclusive use of the trademark in the Bahamas.

Boss Investments Ltd. claims it has the exclusive rights to develop and run venues under the Margaritaville trademark, which includes the name, Buffett images and song lyrics, and associated merchandise under a 2014 agreement.

Boss opened a restaurant, store and bar with live entertainment on Paradise Island, but its plans and partnership with Margaritaville went awry when it wanted to open a second, similar venue.  Read more >>

Chairman of BPL Dr. Donovan Moxey said BPL is working on securing additional assets to compensate for the loss of those engines, but said that might not happen until next summer. Read more >>

Mr. Treco learned of the need for computers at BTVI from the institution’s President and fellow Rotarian, Dr. Robert W. Robertson. Knowing this, he and his wife decided to make a personal donation of an iMac desktop to BTVI. The owner of CGT Contractors and Developers has employed several BTVI students in the past.

BTVI’s Associate Vice President of Fund Development, Alicia Thompson BTVI is thankful for persons like Mr. and Mrs. Treco who noticed a need and reached out to lend a helping hand.

“BTVI is certainly fortunate to have the support of Mr. and Mrs. Treco who have over 30 years’ experience in the construction industry. As we endeavor to develop many more public private partnerships, we encourage others whose lives have been touched by BTVI to give back. We have many needs and we are anxious to find persons who can help us to meet those needs. We are on a mission to propel technical and vocational education and training to the prominence that it rightfully deserves,” she added.
