By SheSoMajor

One of the earliest pieces of financial advice I learned from my aunt was the importance of saving; I was a little girl when she took me to the bank to open up my first savings account.  I still can vividly remember the joy of walking into the bank and the excitement of getting my little bank book and looking at all of the money (not that much) on my account.

Sadly, not a lot of people are taught from a young age the importance of saving and many times we are stuck in impossible situations because of this. I thought now would a great opportunity to encourage those who do not have a financial plan for their lives to think about drafting something or hiring a financial advisor.

I also wanted to provide some valuable ways to save money, many that have worked for me and I continue to use in my daily life!  These 60 money saving tips can be implemented as soon as….right now, while others might take a while to flush out! If you’re saving money for a specific goal, or you just want to reevaluate your spending habits, give these a go!  Read more >>

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC) – The Bahamas Government is urging the Caribbean Community (Caricom) grouping to be “resolute” in establishing a framework and a timetable to implement concrete measures to end the political instability in Venezuela as the region prepares to participate in an international conference to be held in Uruguay on the ongoing political situation in the South American country.

Bahamas Prime Minister Dr Hubert Minnis, in a letter to Caricom Secretary General Irwin LaRocque regarding the region's participation in today's conference in Montevideo being organised by Mexico and Uruguay, said Bahamas remains convinced that “Caricom can play a useful role in forging a productive outcome that will lead to the return of stability and peace in Venezuela”.  Read more >>

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – They’ve traded scuba tanks for sweaters as the reality of Vermont winter settles back in, but for 10 students and three faculty members on a J-term research trip, the Bahamas offered a brief respite from the snow and ice. The group was part of a winter term course called Advanced Field Biology, which focused on coral reef conservation and genetics in the waters surrounding the Abaco Islands.

Led by biology professors Jeremy Ward, Steve Trombulak, and Erin Eggleston, with collaboration from Dr. Craig Dahlgren of the Perry Institute for Marine Science, the class spent the first week of winter term in a Middlebury classroom, learning about reef biology and organisms, marine protected area considerations and rapid ecological assessments, reef microbiomes, and reef genetics and genomics.  Read more >>

Deputy PM and Min. of Finance Peter Turnquest

No VAT increase in the next budget

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – While touting the Minnis administration’s fiscal performance during the first six months of this fiscal year, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Peter Turnquest acknowledged yesterday that the government is still a long way away from eliminating fiscal deficits.

However, the minister said the government’s medium-term fiscal plan, which includes maintaining recurrent expenditure and engaging in a modest enhancement of capital expenditure could result in a small budget surplus of 0.1 per cent of GDP in 2021/2022.

The Bahamas is forecasted to experience a deficit of 1.8 per cent of GPD this fiscal year.  Read more >>

Is the MAGIC coming BACK to Grand Bahama?

Dear Readers,
Monday was a big day for Grand Bahama, with the informational meeting on the ‘Grand Port’ hosted in Freeport and streamed live to the Bahamian Public. Though up to a thousand Grand Bahamians showed up for the event, many who could not attend watched the event live via streaming video, a first for Carnival, according to Giora Israel, Carnival Corporation senior vice president of Global Port and Destination Development. For those who missed the event, you can link here and watch ’The Road to 2021’ here.

If this was not enough for Grand Bahamians to digest, we also learned of a second mega port re-development for the current Freeport Harbour. Details are still forthcoming but can be found on the Guardian website , and is projected to bring over 2,500 jobs and revitalize the Harbour and we understand the hotel strip at the Grand Lucayan.

With all this news for GB, we wonder if the ‘MAGIC’ is indeed coming back to the island. We hope so and we look forward to keeping you up to date as we find out more.

Three months after the first #BeAHero presentation took to an auditorium in Nassau with a message to hundreds of youngsters that no one is too young to take pride in a clean room, school or street, the popular caped crusader campaign went national this week – its first visit outside the capital fittingly in the nation’s second city, Freeport.

Minister of Environment and Housing Romauld ‘Romi’ Ferreira drummed up support for the cleaner, greener, safer communities’ initiative by challenging students at Bishop Michael Eldon Primary School in Grand Bahama.

TONY MACARONI NOMINATED TO BE LISTED IN 10BEST.COM’s TOP 20 BEACH BARS IN THE CARIBBEAN
They say when you visit a country you should go ‘local’ and experience the real culture of the place. For Freeport, that would be a drive to Toni Macaroni’s Conch experience at Taino Beach.

Macaroni’s open aired, thatch-roofed shack was not your run of the mill restaurant. At Tony’s you can only get Roast Conch, his specialty, regular Conch salad, Conch Burgers, Roast Lobster and Shrimp, and Gully Wash cocktails of course.
Ministry of Environment #BeAHero Campaign to Go National, Success Driving Expansion
Driven by success and viral popularity, a campaign initially designed for Nassau to spread the message of the importance of a clean, green and pristine environment among young students will go national February 1, Minister of Environment and Housing Romauld ‘Romi’ Ferreira revealed today.
“The level of enthusiasm for the Be A Hero program has exceeded all expectation from the time we introduced it at the first school,” said the minister.

Bahamas Waste Steps up During Trash Collection Transition.
If you’re a resident of New Providence then you’ve probably seen them: mounds of uncollected trash and overflowing trash bins far too often; which become the perfect targets for stray dogs and a breeding ground for rodents. While challenges related to public sector trash collection services are not new, many more residents have noticed, longer than usual delays in the weekly collection of their garbage.

Bahamian Rotarians visit India to help End Polio

At the end of January Bahamian Rotarians travelled to India to participate in polio National Immunization Day (NID) in the Rotary International drive to rid the world of the polio virus. In the 1940’s and 1950’s approximately half a million people worldwide were either died or were paralyzed after contracting wild poliovirus. The “Are You Gonna Go My Way” singer spent summers in his mother’s native Bahamas as a kid and put down roots on the island 30 years ago. “My mom always said charity starts at home.”  Read more >>

Alexus D’Marco hopes that this is symbolic of her country is making slow but steady progress in becoming more LGBTI-friendly.

D’Marco is optimistic that the revenue from LGBTI tourism will help combat homophobia throughout the country.  Read more >>

As humanity stands on the brink of a technology triggered information revolution, the scale, scope and complexity of the impact of intelligence evolution in machines is unlike anything humankind has experienced before. As a result, the speed at which the ideas, innovations and inventions are emerging on the back of artificial intelligence has no historical precedent and is fundamentally disrupting everything in the human ecosystem.

In addition, the breadth, depth and impact of this intelligence evolution on furthering of ideas and innovations across cyberspace, geospace and space (CGS) herald the fundamental transformation of entire interconnected and interdependent systems of basic and applied science: research and development, concept to commercialization, politics to governance, socialization to capitalism, education to training, production to markets, survival to security and more.  Read more >>
