Chairman of the Water & Sewerage Corporation, Adrian Gibson.

By Tamara McKenzie

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Executive Chairman of the Water and Sewerage Corporation, Adrian Gibson, on Sunday sought to set the record straight on a number of claims levied last Friday by president of The Bahamas Utility Services and Allied Workers Union (BUSAWU) Dwayne Woods.

At a press conference held last week, Woods said line staff at the Water and Sewerage Corporation (WSC) were considering a strike vote as the union had many concerns.  Some of the main concerns expressed included the denial of free usage of office space for union meetings, the refusal to grant administrative leave to the union president, and forcing employees to take accrued vacation leave.

On Sunday, Gibson said the board and management of WSC were taken aback by the commentary of  Woods and much of his “rabble-rousing” is simply because he does not want to return to work.

In fact, Gibson alleged that Woods has not worked for years.  Read more >>

Artist's Profiles: John Beadle for "We Suffer to Remain"
Bahamian conceptual artist John Beadle speaks about the work he developed for the British Council collaborative exhibition "We Suffer to Remain". Continuing the work produced for the National Exhibition 7 in 2013, “Antillean: An Ecology”, John Beadle goes even deeper with rigour and intent into amassing figures in Cuffed: held in check. Here the figures become more explicit and connected to a power and hierarchy that was somewhat ambivalent in prior iterations. With the expansion of the figures and the way that the bodies are held as chattel, it can’t be mistaken for anything else.

Happy Valentine's Day Readers,

This week’s editorial is a strong one! We thought it quite appropriate on Valentine’s Day to remind all Bahamians, no matter what island they live on, that we are in this all together: WE IS ONE!

Are you Serious?

Last week we were very excited to tell you about one definite cruise port and one proposed second port project for Grand Bahama. We were at the Carnival ‘Road to 2021’ launch, and the excitement in the air was so fantastic, especially as everyone knows it’s been a few hard and tragic years for the ‘second city’. So imagine our horror, when the headlines two days after this double bang for GB, was about Nassau having major concerns that Freeport was going to steal all their cruise business!

Are you SERIOUS?

This is how you treat your sister island? We finally get good news and you are only concerned about how you will do? You, with your Atlantis? You, with Baha Mar? The Pointe? Albany? Island House? Palm Cay? Need we go on?

Be A Hero Youth Clean-up Campaign Goes National, Caped Crusaders Hit Grand Bahama School

Response to the NHIA presentation from the PLP leadership team.
Firstly, we in the Progressive Liberal Party would like to thank both the Chairman Dr. Robin Roberts and the Managing Director, Graham Whitmarsh and his team for an informative presentation on the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) and their plans for National Health Insurance (NHI) going forward.

We in the Progressive Liberal Party understand the importance of universal health and the role national health insurance must play in order to deliver on this important mandate. NHI is our baby and we want it to succeed. Quality healthcare must be accessible to all Bahamians and we believe NHI is the way to accomplish this.

For the second consecutive year, the executives at ARM Caribbean Limited invested in its employees by awarding nine of them the opportunity to complete a specialized training program at the Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTV).

ARM is a heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) design and contracting firm and is owned by Bahamians. The company is responsible for the completion of the HVAC work at Fusion Superplex.

Between January and December 2018, the nine employees studied Electrical Installation I and AC/DC Circuits and HVAC I and II. The cohort which included Lashad Bullard, Colvino Flowers, Wellington Knowles, Craig Martin, Jeiel Munnings, Patrick Rhodriquez, Rasheed Robinson, Jerome Sands and Lee Young, attended classes four days per week for three and a half hours.

ARM employee and program participant, Jeiel Munnings, is thankful to the company for believing and investing in him and his colleagues. He said the hands-on skills he obtained from BTVI have made him more efficient in his daily tasks at work.

“The best part of the course was the hands on for me. It's one thing to show it in a book, but when it’s enforced by hands-on training, it can produce a solid foundation,” he said.

Jeiel is excited to continue with ARM and hopes to become an asset to the company. He also has plans to return to BTVI to independently study Electrical II.

Meanwhile, ARM’s Manager Omar Ramirez, said that education is the best way to enhance individual and team capabilities in the company. The company strongly believes in education and training as a means to empower their employees.

“I have noticed that most of the employees from the first cohort of the BTVI program are now working on their own within their crew. This is a great step forward, especially for those that had little experience in construction,” said Mr. Ramirez.

The company plans to continue engaging BTVI to train its employees until most of them complete the training. They then hope to team up with BTVI in other ways that can benefit the wider labor force.

Likewise, BTVI Associate Vice President of Fund Development, Alicia Thompson said BTVI is excited to see the level of interest that ARM continues to show in its employees and commends them for their commitment as they equip them to meet industry needs.

“ARM is indeed a pacesetter and we are certain that the BTVI education obtained has made a valuable contribution to their company. We look forward to many more years of mutually beneficial collaboration,” she said.

The group also successfully completed the 10-hour Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) certification course. The participants were simultaneously enrolled in a six-week refrigerant management certification course, which culminated in their sitting of the Refrigerant Service Engineers Society Exam (RSES).

The nine employees were also presented with BTVI certificates of completion.

It’s our anniversary! I can’t believe it, but today marks exactly six months to the day that we tied the knot.
