I Traced My Great-Grandmother's Journey From The Bahamas To NYC — And Learned About My Own Roots In The Process

By Jada Gomez

My great-grandmother died before I was born, but I still feel like I knew her. Like many oral histories of Black families, which are passed down and preserved while told around the dinner table, her story was one that the women in my family kept alive when I was growing up in Queens, New York. The family matriarch on my mother's side, my great-grandmother has always had a mythical quality to her — like a character from Black folklore.  Read more >>

Double Your Donation
This week all donations will be matched
up to $20,000!
This matching challenge was raised by The Devereux Ocean Foundation in memory of Read Devereux and Kris Colvin, who were friends of Abaco and long time supporters of ocean education and coral conservation.

Each donation received during this challenge will contribute directly to the progress of FRIENDS 2019 - 2021 Strategic Plan, which aims to increase accessibility of environmental education, utilize creative ways to raise awareness about marine conservation, and reinforce best practices for sustainable living, all while maintaining a strong environmental education program.

We raised $14,000 at the Reef Ball in Marsh Harbour, and we are asking for your help to raise the additional $6,000.

It takes all of us working together as a community to protect Abaco's environment. With the support of our donors, FRIENDS will continue educating youth, sharing awareness with visitors, and attracting research opportunities that facilitate our education programs - all of this leading to conservation.

To help us turn $20,000 into $40,000 this week, you can donate here with a credit card or email me with your pledge.

Thank you for your continued support and encouragement!

Deputy Chief Reporter
krussell@tribunemedia.net

HUNDREDS of Bahamas Power and Light customers in the Family Islands could be left in darkness for failure to adequately pay their bills, beginning on March 15.

This decision, The Tribune understands, stems from frustration at the corporation that many customers across several Family Islands do not pay their bills consistently.

Among these, according to sources, is a vast cross section of customers in the MICAL constituency who have not made any payments to BPL for over a year.

BPL chairman Donovan Moxey confirmed the disconnections will start in a little under a month to accounts 60 days in arrears and owing $300 or more.

The company has undertaken a full-scale media campaign to advise customers that mass disconnections are coming.  Read more >>

That's all right then. Not a kidnap. Just doing your 'job'

This week's editorial is an editorial by the Tribune released this week on a recent “kidnapping” alleged by The Bahamas Human Rights Association, by The Bahamas Immigration Department. We would like to remind all readers, to know thier rights and for all of us to practice #HUMANDIGNITY when dealing with one another. #242NewsBahamas endorses this editorial 100%

Dear Reader,

"The Immigration department must hate the sight of Fred Smith QC almost as much as they hate the prospect of doing their jobs properly. If they did the latter, they wouldn’t need to see nearly so much of the former.

This week brought the alarming sight of a man being detained by Immigration officers who bundled him into the trunk of a car."

Campbell begins consultations towards development of comprehensive plan for persons with disabilities
Minister of Social Services and Urban Development, the Hon. Frankie A. Campbell began consultations towards the development of a comprehensive plan for the community of persons living with disabilities. The plan is expected to include legislation.

Minister Campbell recently held separate discussions with Mrs. Sheila Culmer, a noted disability rights advocate and trailblazer, and former President of the Bahamas National Council for Disability (BNCD), and officials of the Physically Challenged Children’s Committee at the Ministry’s headquarters, located at Aventura Plaza, Bethel Avenue and John F. Kennedy Drive.
Blackmosting
The Bahamian Government seems to have been caught by surprise by the punitive action taken by the European Commission against The Bahamas on Wednesday February 13, 2019, alleging that The Bahamas has 7 strategic deficiencies in its AML/CFT regime, based on Article 9 of the European Union’s Directive 2015/849.

I caution the Prime Minister, the Attorney General, the Minister of Finance and the Minister of Financial Services, Trade & Industry against rushing off to Brussels, in a panic, to make any ill-considered appeasements and secret agreements.

Bahamas Waste Encourages ‘The Power of Play’ at Centerville Primary School
Play, like more formal avenues of education, is critical to the development of young children. Sadly, for children of inner-city communities, safe spaces designed to encourage physical activity and outdoor play can be few and far between.

For many residents living in New Providence, broken park equipment, non-functioning restrooms, and littered spaces have become quite commonplace. In an effort to reverse the trend, however, Bahamas Waste (BW), the island’s leading waste management company, recently stepped up to help community leaders transform the playground at the Centerville Primary School.

Training Future Bahamian Olympians
Swift Athletics Head Coach Andrew Tynes said many sporting medals and trophies may well be in The Bahamas’ future thanks in part to the well of athletic potential within the B3A-sanctioned track and field club.

Tynes said, “Swift Athletics got its start four years ago. We normally take on about 40 kids but this year we have 55, and the amount of talent in that pool is undeniable.”

Extension confirmed for offshore Bahamas well commitment

DOUGLAS, UK – Bahamas Petroleum Co. (BPC) is set to gain an extension of its four southern licenses offshore the Bahamas until end-December 2020.

This follows a formal notification from the government in response to BPC’s request for clarification concerning the timing and work obligations for the permits, as a result of time disruptions outside of the company’s control since 2015.

BPC has a commitment to drill an environmentally responsible exploratory well, its first off the islands, and on expiry of the extension, will have the option to either apply for a production lease over all or part of the license area, or to extend the licenses into a third exploration period or apply for an appraisal extension.

Consultant Black & Veatch will assist with the planning process, and the company continues discussions with various companies on a potential farm-in for the initial well.  (source)

Why Religion Is Ignorance

$
0
0

When someone sees a rainbow, do they say, “I am seeing a physical reaction, that can be produced in laboratories with the right conditions,” or do they say, “I am seeing the omen from god, that the world will not be flooded.”? When someone sees fire, do they say, “I am seeing the gift of Prometheus,” or do they say, “I am seeing the vibration of atoms”? The question here is: is this person irreligious or religious, scientific or un-scientific?

Thousands of years ago, our ancestors could not explain these things. What is fire? What is the sky? How did we get here? They became ignorant in their claims and created gods and spirits to answer their questions. “How did we get here? God made humans from the dust.” — “Where does lightning come from? Lightning is Allah trying to strike and kill people.” — “Where does wind come from? The god Purusa blew the wind out of his mouth.” — “Why does the Sun go across the sky? The god Apollo pulls it across on his chariot.”

So, you see, man formed his ignorance and conjured ghosts to his aid. Tyranny and vice would reign over the numerous theocracies that developed over the globe. Galileo would question what the religious men claimed; as would Giordano Bruno who gave his life for his beliefs, burned at the stake for questioning authority. Ferdinand Magellan’s voyage would make it all the way around the world. These men proved incalculable times that the church, the Bible, and religion is indeed fallible! Lightning is not the work of Allah — it is the work of positive and negative electrons. There are occurrences in this Universe and they are natural and explainable.

Religion is ignorance.  Read more >>
