Bahamas Consulate General Atlanta

(Atlanta, Georgia)… Forging stronger alliances in education, entertainment, trade, tourism sports and youth initiatives were the primary topics when newly appointed Bahamas Consul General Randy E. Rolle paid a recent courtesy call to Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed.

Accompanied by Deputy Consul General Monique Vanderpool, Rolle who considers himself a self-professed Falcons fan, was shown the Mayor’s personal collection of items from Atlanta’s NFL team while touring his office. In turn, the Mayor revealed his love for The Bahamas, which lures him to vacation there annually during the winter.

While there was amicable banter, the focus shifted to ways in which Atlanta and The Bahamas can offer exchange opportunities, particularly in areas such as education, economy, youth initiatives and tourism. Another important aspect for further development is culture and historical connections of The Bahamas and the jurisdiction over which the Consul General presides.

“I am excited with the opportunities that exist for Bahamians and Atlantans,” said Consul General Rolle. “As a result of this meeting, we see that we are on the cusp of establishing a mutually beneficial partnership in several areas between The Commonwealth of The Bahamas and the City of Atlanta. Like myself, Mayor Reed is also quite a young man and we both understand the importance of reaching youth with special initiatives and incentives in order to pursue the vision.”

Post-event Kayak Challenge Press Release - Abaco, Little Harbour, 9th November 2013

On Saturday November 9th, 40 paddlers set out in support of the Abaco Cancer Society and Friends of the Environment in the 3rd Annual Kayak Challenge.  Organizers of the event were thrilled with the turnout despite high winds and cloudy skies.

Due to the high winds participants all stuck together and paddled an 8-mile course through the Bight of Old Robinson creek system in south Abaco.  While waters were calm in the creeks, paddling through the bay lived up to the “Challenge” in the name of this event.  Some paddlers stopped when they arrived at the Bight of Old Robinson, others continued on to Tom Curry Point, and there were 3 intrepid souls who continued paddling on to Pete’s Pub through very choppy seas.

Marjolein Scott, the President of the Abaco Cancer Society, who kayaked the full 8-mile course stated, “This year’s Kayak Challenge was just that: A Challenge!  What an amazing day, ..rough seas, lots of wind and some very determined paddlers.  The money raised will go far in helping the Abaco Cancer Society give aid to local cancer patients.  A huge thank you to all who came out to support this wonderful annual event!”  Kristin Williams, the Executive Director of Friends of the Environment, who was in charge of on-shore organization and registration exclaimed “This is my favorite event of the year! Despite the inclement weather all 40 participants were in the best of spirits both before and after the paddle. Everyone was so excited to be a part of this event. It is a great feeling to see so many people working so hard to support these two important community organizations.”

Funds from the event benefit both the Abaco Cancer Society and Friends of the Environment.  Funds were raised through business sponsorships and by the participants raising individual sponsorships.  Business sponsors included Abaco Family Medicine, Abaco Petroleum, IE Imports, Marsh Harbour Exporters and Importers, Cherokee Air, Hope Town Harbour Lodge, The Paint Place, Lightbourne Marine, Pete’s Pub & Gallery, Shirley Enterprises, Bon Secours Medical Group, Sands Marine Surveying & Consulting, Abaco Tourist Office, Maxwell’s and Chelsea’s Choice.

Although the course covered up to 15 miles in 2012 and 8 miles this year, much of the creek system still remains to be seen.  So stay tuned for next year’s event date – another chance to see more of the wonders of the East Abaco Creeks.

ELECTRICAL CODES WORKSHOP - Former Chief Electrical Inspector for Vancouver, Canada, Ark Tsisserev, is shown here speaking during a one-day electrical code seminar.  Shown in the background are: Baha Mar’s Senior Mechanical Engineering and Plumbing Manager, Milton Morgan; Ministry of Works Acting Chief Engineer of Mechanical and Electrical, Dwight King and Manager of the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) Electrical Codes, Michael Wilson.

Some 50 Electricians and Electrical Engineers gained invaluable information on Tuesday during a one-day seminar on the Canadian Electrical Code Part I, which is the electrical code adopted by The Bahamas.

INVALUABLE INFORMATION - Some 50 people from the private and public sector listened attentively during a one-day electrical code seminar sponsored by the Bahamas Society of Engineers.  Presenter, Art Tsisserev , the former Chief Electrical Inspector for Vancouver, Canada is shown  here along with Engineer from Graphite Engineering, Ramon Bain (left) and Allison Coley, Senior Electrical Inspector, Ministry of Works.

Sponsored by The Bahamas Society of Engineers and facilitated by The Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI), there were numerous topics including, but not limited to: circuit loading, grounding and bonding; emergency generators and electrically connected life safety systems.

Former Chief Electrical Inspector for Vancouver, Canada, Ark Tsisserev, was the main presenter to the audience, which included BTVI personnel.   Mr. Tsisserev has 25 years of experience in the field and is Committee Chair of the Canadian Electrical Code Part I of the Canadian Standards Association (CSA).  Also making a presentation was Manager of the CSA Electrical Codes, Michael Wilson.

TECHNICAL EDUCATION - Former Chief Electrical Inspector for Vancouver, Canada, Ark Tsisserev, is pictured here during a dynamic presentation to Electrical Engineers and Electricians during a one-day electrical code seminar.  Also shown is Baha Mar’s Senior Mechanical Engineering and Plumbing Manager, Milton Morgan.

Associate member of the CSA, Quentin Knowles, noted the importance of the seminar as substantial education is required to be in compliance with the code.  “Electrical codes are very complex. It is not practical for a small jurisdiction like The Bahamas to write our own electrical code because of the complex nature.  Mr. Tsisserev can offer a depth of knowledge on the code that only the chair can offer,” he said.

The Canadian Electrical Code Part I committee amends the codes every three years.

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS FOR THE LADY SASSOON GOLDEN HEART AWARD

There are many people in our lives who go unrecognized for all that they have done and continue to do to make life better for others. More often than not, these persons don’t ask for anything in return; they simply desire to make life easier for others and our society a better place to live. Such persons step outside of their work environments to influence the education, health, the economy and social wellbeing of others. This Christmas, as you plan to meet with family and friends, the Heart Ball Committee encourages you to celebrate those special people in our life. In fact, the public is being encouraged to submit nominations for the Lady Sassoon Golden Heart Award.

On Saturday February 15th, 2014, The Heart Ball Committee will host the 50th Annual Heart Ball. Under the patronage of His Excellency Sir Arthur Foulkes and Joan Lady Foulkes, and The Right Honourable Perry Gladstone Christie and Mrs. Bernadette Christie, the 2013 / 2014 Heart Ball Committee will host the 50th Annual Heart Ball.  The theme for this Ball is, “Celebrating the Golden Anniversary of a Vision…Championing the Cause of Children.  Guests can look forward to an evening filled with elegance, fine food, fun, dancing and prizes. There will be live band and orchestral performances followed by special music by Gary “Super” Johnson. All persons attending the Ball will have an opportunity to leave with a prize; there will be table prizes, an in-house raffle and a special auction. Featured items include: a set of round trip ticket to London, kindly donated by British Airways, jewelry from Cartier and Bulgari provided by John Bull, and much, much more. One of the highlights of the evening is the presentation of the Lady Sassoon Golden Heart Award. Most importantly, this event is the major fundraiser that benefits The Sir Victor Sassoon (Bahamas) Heart Foundation, helping to repair the hearts of children.

Since 1968, the Lady Sassoon Golden Heart has been presented at the Annual Heart Ball. The award was initiated by The Heart Foundation to applaud and give recognition to individuals who have selflessly given of themselves to promote human welfare and dignity, thus making life better for their fellow men. Typically, this work would be outside of one’s regular paid work. Many persons have won the award including: Ms. Marjorie Davis, Camille Lady Barnett, Mr. Lowell Mortimer, Ms. Mary Profilo, Dr. Donald Gerace, Captain Durward Knowles and many more. Most recently, Mrs. Sheila Culmer, a disability activist, won the 2012 Lady Sassoon Golden Heart Award.  She, along with her predecessors, was chosen from a pool of worthy candidates, to be the winners of this award. Mrs. Culmer lives by the philosophy, “Never look down at anyone unless you are stooping down to pick them up”.  She encourages others to do the same.

As the year 2014 fast approaches, interested persons are invited to submit a nomination, to be accompanied by a letter or statement explaining why the person recommended should receive the award. Nominations are to be submitted to:

The Bahamas Reef Environment Educational Foundation (BREEF) is pleased that the government has finally announced the three-month December 1 - February 28 closed season for the Nassau Grouper this winter, but further notes that it is time for the closed season on this highly-prized but endangered species to be fixed in our legislation, rather than having to wait on a Ministerial decree each year.“It is just a few days before the start of the closed season and Bahamians are just being notified of this important closure.

HMBS Flamingo Survivor Carves Out New Life

HMBS survivor Gregory H. Curry is now a part-time Electrical instructor at BTVI

For the past 10 years, Gregory H. Curry has been a part-time instructor at The Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI).  Some of his Electrical Installation students are aware he is a former Royal Bahamas Defence Force Officer.  However, few realize he nearly gave his life for this country.

May 10th, 1980 would forever be enshrined in the annals of Mr. Curry’s mind. It was the day when Cuban jets viciously and mercilessly attacked the HMBS Flamingo in Bahamian waters after the crew of two Cuban fishing vessels was apprehended for poaching.  It was the day he nearly lost his life.

“It wasn’t an accident; it was an incident…May 10th brings back serious memories. Every year, it’s like a punishment.  The sadness isn’t as deep. Time heals anything,” said Mr. Curry, who retired as Force Chief Petty Officer on August 1st, 2011.  When he walked out of those gates, there was a sense of satisfaction that he served his country and served it well for 37 years.

Mr. Curry said he enjoys being around the young people at BTVI; hence, working at the post-secondary educational institution is a good fit for him.  “These young guys make me feel young.  A lot of them stay behind and talk to me and I give advice,” said the part-time instructor, who is touching lives.

He added, “I enjoy expressing myself and teaching them the right way.  I like when they actually get it and they get it perfect. I love teaching.”

Additionally, Mr. Curry, who was 25 at the time of the Cuban attack, vividly remembers the loud, rapid sounds of rocket and machine guns, the engine room erupting in fire, the gaping five-foot hole that punctuated the starboard side of the sleeping quarters and even having his lifejacket stuck in the propeller of a dory while being rescued.

HMBS survivor and Electrical instructor, Gregory H. Curry, addressing prospective BTVI students

“One rocket went right through the galley and exploded.  It was on fire and we were just about to go there to eat before this happened.  Hot metal also burst after the first attack.  One week after the attacks, I was still picking metal out of my back,” he recalled.
Eventually, the HMBS’ captain, Amos Rolle, ordered the crew to abandon ship. “It was like jumping from the frying pan into the fire.  I dove as deep as I could and all I could see was the bullets shooting through the water,” recollected the survivor of the harrowing experience.

Mr. Curry, who was HMBS’ Electrical Technician and Senior Radio Operator, firmly believed the only reason sharks stayed away was because of the diesel which leaked from the ship’s huge tanks.   He also acknowledged that divine intervention was paramount to his survival.  This is captured in the work of local artist Kishan Munroe, who is currently staging an extraordinary exhibition that throws the spotlight on the painful episode.  Held at The National Art Gallery of The Bahamas, the exhibition is dubbed, “Swan Song of the Flamingo.”

“Everything we said, he actually painted.  He has a photo of me swimming with two flamingoes holding my jackets, like spirit flamingoes.  I almost cried when I saw it.  It touched me to my very soul,” said Mr. Curry, who said fate had it that the crew was fewer in number that day; otherwise it would have been more disastrous.

Four Defence Force crew members perished in that day’s attack: Able Seaman, Fenrick Sturrup along with Marine Seamen David Tucker, Edward Williams and Austin Smith.

Even when the surviving Defence Force Officers  were able to finally escape and eventually weed their way through bushes on Ragged Island, it was not truly over.  “When day break, a big jet flew over the island several times.  Those people in Ragged Island went crazy. They thought they were under attack.  They terrified the people.  They were as close as 30 feet above ground.  Those people were shaking like leaves,” said Mr. Curry.

The effects of the incident left officers traumatized.  When they were finally able to fly from Ragged Island to New Providence, a stewardess opened a soda and according to Mr. Curry, when it popped, two or three of the men “dove under their seats.  They were still shell shocked.”

BTVI’s Electrical student, Joseph Roberts, is shown here cutting a light switch wire under the watchful eyes of Electrical Installation instructor, Gregory Curry.

Today, life goes on for Mr. Curry.  Due to the experience, the husband and father of three admitted to not being afraid of much.  “It took away a lot of my fears.  Nothing much really frightens me.  I survived that for a reason. I have three sons studying law, medicine and one is a musician.  I survived so they could be here and I await to see their roles in life,” he mused.
