BTVI carpentry students Hezekiah Gordon (l) and Annishkea Collie (r) are under the watchful supervision of carpentry Head of Department, Graham Thornley, as they build wooden receptacles to help collect cans for kids.

Students of the Tech Prep Construction Technology program at The Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI) have completed eight wooden receptacles for the ‘Cans for Kids’ program.   The students have been working on the receptacles since October 28th.

Cans For Kids is a non-profit organization founded in 1998 by Ginny McKinney to recycle aluminum cans. The net proceeds are used to help finance children's programs in The Bahamas.

According to BTVI’s Carpentry Head of Department, Graham Thornley, the community project has benefitted students in multiple ways. “It teaches them basic skills and techniques to be used in carpentry. They have learned to use power tools like the table saw, drills, the compound mitre and they learned measurement and safety precautions among other things. At the same time, they are giving back to the community,” he said.

BTVI carpentry students Hezekiah Gordon (l) and Annishkea Collie (r) are acquiring practical skills while contributing to the community project, ‘Cans for Kids.’

Physically Disabled Siblings to Participate in Marathon to Support Seriously Ill Children

Runners in the Nassau Bahamas Marathon this upcoming January will probably see an uncommon sight. Two local youths plan to participate in the race- the catch. The 16 and 13 year old siblings suffer from Charcot Marie Tooth Syndrome, a rare neuromuscular disease that causes severe atrophy of the muscles. The degenerative disease has left both Tzvi and Racheli Herzfeld reliant on wheelchairs. “It hasn’t been easy”, said Racheli, “before my recent surgery I could walk on my own and had more stamina, but recuperating has been hard.”

The 16 and 13 year old siblings from Teaneck NJ, plan to compete in a half marathon this upcoming January with assistance from Kids of Courage. Kids of Courage is a volunteer centric organization that gives year round support to children living with serious and terminal illness. The New York based non-profit specializes in medically supervised travel, and makes dream trips possible for children who would otherwise be confined to the hospital or to their home care routine. “Because of our expertise in traveling with serious illness, it’s essentially easier for us to travel withlarge groups of medically challenged individuals than it is for most parents to travel with just one,” said Dr. Stuart Ditchek, the program’s Medical Director.

The Herzfeld’s first joined Kids of Courage on its 2010 flagship summer trip to San Francisco. “I feel so comfortable around this group” said Racheli “I got to go adaptive horseback riding”, Tzvi added, “I never thought I would be able to ride a horse again”. They’ve also been taken adaptive skiing, swimming with dolphins, and to Los Angeles and Orlando, all on the generosity of Kids of Courage.

Kids of Courage provides life altering trips to its hundreds of participants at absolutely no cost to the children and their families. Last summer, over 150 seriously and terminally ill children from 14 states and 4 countries went to Orlando for 9 days. The group was accompanied by 350 volunteers, including a medical volunteer for each child. Around 1,200 doses of medication was administered per day on the road,
which according to Kids of Courage is more than an average sized children’s hospital.

Kids of Courage will be hosting a charity marathon weekend in the Bahamas this January for its supporters who are running to raise crucial funds for the organization. When the Herzfelds found out they would have the chance to help give back to Kids of Courage, they jumped to sign up for the race. “As someone who is
physically disabled, it isn’t always easy to help others” Racheli lamented, “now I have a chance to help in a way that is possible”. This altruistic mentality isn’t out of the place for the Herzfelds. “Kids of Courage is my extended family,” said Tzvi, “I would do anything to help my brothers and sisters. It also adds to the adventure, I never thought I would go on an airplane, let alone go to the Bahamas with my friends to help them out.”

Volunteers from the organization plan to push the siblings in adaptive chairs, but they’re determined to walk across the finish line on their own. “I know it’ll be physically challenging, but I’m ready”, said Tzvi. “I’m just going to smile real big for the photo finish”, joked Racheli.

Acting Prime Minister Philip Brave Davis endorses luxury resort as official Out Island partner of Bahamas Speed Week

GREAT EXUMA, THE BAHAMAS (December 12, 2013) - After speeding around the capital last week, entrants and organizers from Bahamas Speed Week slowed down on Monday with an elaborate excursion to the luxurious Grand Isle Resort & Spa.

Philip 'Brave' Davis, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Works and Urban Development, attended the reception last Monday at Grand Isle Resort & Spa. Culminating in a private soiree overlooking Emerald Bay, it served as the final crescendo in an experience that struck a cord with Speed Week entrants.

Members of Speed Week and other VIPs boarded private planes in Nassau and landed on Farmer's Cay. The runway, normally quiet and secluded, came alive with four private planes and a helicopter.

Participants enjoyed a buffet lunch at Ty’s Bar & Grill, hit the beach and boarded a vessel for a tour of Exuma’s sprawling cays. Later that night, Grand Isle hosted a private reception, lit up by spotlights, stars and torches.

"As the official Out Island partner of Bahamas Speed Week, we were very pleased to have such an impressive line-up of dignitaries and guests," said Grant Castle, executive director at Grand Isle. "We look forward to next year, where the event will be even bigger and better."

Grand Isle features well-appointed ocean front villas combining an intimate resort experience with upscale vacation home living. Each villa comes with high-end furnishings, spacious living areas and spectacular views. Amenities include an infinity-edge pool, four-star restaurant, state-of-the-art fitness center, and SeaStar Spa with an adjacent Greg Norman Signature Golf Course.

Peter Nicholson, an owner at Grand Isle and president of GIV Bahamas Inc., addressed the crowd on Monday night. He believes Bahamas Speed Week is a natural partner for Grand Isle.

TripAdvisor recently ranked the resort 1st in the Bahamas and 3rd in the Caribbean for luxury vacations.

Castle offered one of many speeches to the crowd, headlined by a keynote address by Philip "Brave" Davis, the acting prime minister and minister of public works and urban development. Davis was serving as acting prime minister while Perry Christie attended the memorial service of Nelson Mandela in Johannesburg South Africa.

Other speakers included Jerome Fitzgerald, the minister of education, Tony Moss, Member of Parliament for Exuma, David McLaughlin, the director of Bahamas Speed Week, and Peter Nicholson, owner at Grand Isle and president of GIV Bahamas Inc.
"We see Bahamas Speed Week as a natural partner going forward," Nicholson added. "Nassau is a beautiful place, but we want to expose these special guests to a wider Bahamas."

A central theme of reception was the imminent construction of a full racetrack for next year's festivities. Seen as a key ingredient to the event's success, Davis announced the construction of the track during the opening ceremonies early last week.

Bahamas Speed Week attracts dozens of vintage car collectors from around the world, exposing the archipelago to influential, high-net-worth individuals and offering another major event on the tourism calendar.

In Nassau, Grand Isle also served as a major sponsor during the week in the exclusive Paddock Club, showcasing the resort's villas, amenities and stunning geography to Speed Week entrants.

"Putting on these kinds of events is never easy. But with the help of Grand Isle and other sponsors, and the construction of a racetrack, I believe this event will really start to pick up some speed," according to Nicholson.

Christmas appeal for Heart Foundation

Saving little Zuri…… Championing the Cause of Children ……Save a heart this Christmas

It’s that time of year again, for making lists and spreading the Christmas cheer. Christmas is that wondrous time; a time when God gave us the gift of His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. This Christmas, The Heart Ball Committee wants you to spread the good cheer and help to make a miracle happen for both an infant in serious need of heart care, and a family who is worried about their child, but cannot afford the care for them.

Seven years ago, the kindness of others helped The Heart Foundation to bring an early Christmas gift and miracle to a child, whose parent could not afford heart care for her. For the past 7 years economic hardship has hit many, including the Heart Foundation; however the Foundation strives to never turn anyone away. The financial report for the year ending June 30th, 2012, showed the Foundation operating with a loss of $187,035; primarily because of the increase in the of children who needed immediate heart care that year and the lack of funds to offset cost. Your gift and considerations this Christmas can help give the gift of life to a child in need of heart care and hope to a family.

Seven years ago, Zanda Bonamy gave birth to a beautiful baby girl by the name of Zuri, in late October 2006. Zuri was an early thanksgiving present and a wonderful gift from God to her mother. Ms. Bonamy treasured the moments she spent with her new born for many reasons. Little did she imagine that her baby girl, her gift from God, would need a Christmas miracle or a financial gift to save her life.

No parent wants to hear that their newborn is ill. However, when Zuri had her initial check-up the neonatologist heard a heart murmur and referred Zuri and her mother. They were later referred to Dr. Jerome Lightbourne, pediatric cardiologist.  Dr. Lightbourne examined Zuri and subsequently diagnosed her with double outlet right ventricle (DORV). This is a condition, at birth, where both of the great arteries connect (in whole or in part) to the right ventricle (RV), pumping oxygenated and deoxygenated blood into the body, at once.  Along with DORV, Zuri also had ventricular septal defect (VSD), commonly referred to as a hole in heart. She also had pulmonary valve stenosis (PVS) - a blockage in the flow of blood from the right ventricle to the pulmonary artery.

Despite all the technical terms, one thing was certain, Zuri needed heart surgery soon, if she was going to live beyond the year’s end. The surgery Zuri needed to correct her heart problems cost $29,000 and had to be performed abroad. Unfortunately, Ms. Bonamy did not have the funds at that time and needed urgent help to save her daughter’s life. Through it all, this new mom spirits remained high because she relied on her faith in God. Zuri’s case was referred to The Heart Foundation to help repair Zuri’s heart and save her life. Zuri received an early Christmas miracle in December 2006 that helped to save her life. Thanks to the generosity of the Sir Victor Sassoon (Bahamas) Heart Foundation, Zuri had heart surgery at Holtz Children’s Hospital, performed by Dr. Rosenkranz, pediatric cardiothoracic surgeon.

In the words of Ms. Zanda Bonamy,

“Honestly, I didn’t have $29,000 on hand to pay for Zuri’s surgery. The Heart Foundation embraced my daughter like it was their own and she wasn’t kept on a waiting list. Once Dr. Lightbourne explained the need for surgery, they all went in to “Save Zuri” mode. I thank God for Mrs. Sassoon and the vision she had. I am forever in debt to the Heart Foundation. I never even knew they existed before. It’s a miracle that people like this still exist in our world today, who simply care about the well-being of a child regardless of social, academic or political status”.

The Heart Foundation is a non-profit organization, established by Lady Evelyn Sassoon in 1961, that helps to repair the hearts of children who cannot ordinarily afford heart care. The Heart Ball Committee is the fund raising arm of the Heart Foundation. Because of the generosity of others, Zuri is alive today. She is a healthy, vibrant and inquiring little girl who is working towards becoming a productive citizen. You can help children in need of heart care this Christmas with a simple decision; join the fight against heart disease in children. You can join the Heart Ball Committee in the fight against heart disease in children by: planning to attend the Annual Heart Ball, making a donation to The Heart Foundation, becoming a major sponsor, purchasing booklet ads, donating Heart Ball prizes, participating in Heart Month activities, joining the Bahamas Heart Association and so much more.

On Saturday February 15th, 2014, The Heart Ball Committee will host the 50th Annual Heart Ball at Melia, formerly known and Sheraton Nassau Beach Resort. The theme for this Ball is, “Celebrating the Golden Anniversary of a Vision…Championing the Cause of Children”.  Guests can look forward to an evening filled with fun, excitement, elegance, fine food, dancing and lots of prizes. There will be live band and orchestral performances followed by special music to dance the night away to. All persons attending the Ball will have an opportunity to leave with a prize; there will be table prizes, an in-house raffle and a special auction. Featured items are jewelry from Cartier and Bulgari provided by John Bull, free airline tickets and much, much more. One of the highlights of the evening is the presentation of the Lady Sassoon Golden Heart Award. Most importantly, this event is the major fundraiser that benefits The Sir Victor Sassoon (Bahamas) Heart Foundation, helping to repair the hearts of children.  Tickets for regular seating are $250 per person. Platinum seating and other sponsorship accommodations are also available.

For details on the 50th Heart Ball, donations, booklets ads, Heart Month or for more information, please call the Heart Foundation at 327-0806.

I squinted across the parking lot and sighed, letting the humid breeze blow away the last traces of airplane air. There was no rush, really, no need to dash around, check my watch or even wait closer to Tom so we didn’t lose track of each other in the shuffle while he got the luggage. Because, I reminded myself, down here there was no shuffle, no tight schedules, no worries. There was one runway, an outdoor luggage cart with ours in plain sight ready to grab, and a long, lazy month in a beach house just down the road.
