Fed-up with the immigration laws of The Bahamas and with how Haitians and other nationals are treated, members of Rights Bahamas did not mince words as they recently addressed the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) on May 10th, voicing their concerns at a hearing on the rights of migrants and their descendants in The Bahamas.

The hearing was held at the regional headquarters of the University of the West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica.

The Commission heard the complaints of Rights Bahamas members Stephanie St. Fleur, Louby Georges and Dawrin Thompson.

The trio were also accompanied by human rights activist Frederick Smith, QC, and Joseph Darville.

The request for the hearing was filed by Rights Bahamas in conjunction with Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights, which is headquartered in Washington, DC. This led the Bahamas government to becalled before the 172nd session of the Inter-American Commission of Human Rights (IACHR), to respond to a petition from Rights Bahamas on the treatment of migrants.

Representing the government of The Bahamas at the session was State Minister for Legal Affairs, Elsworth Johnson.

In addressing the commissioners, Stephanie St. Fleur claimed that since 2015, The Bahamas  has become even more intolerant of Haitian migrants and their descendants, targeting them with increasingly hostile rhetoric and social policies.  Read more >>

15 biggest cruise ships in the world

(CNN) — When Symphony of the Seas, an 18-deck cruise ship measuring longer than a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, sailed out of port for the very first time this April, it smashed yet another size record in the cruise industry.

But the current largest passenger ship in the world is hardly one of a kind.

Her slightly smaller sister ships -- the Harmony of the Seas, the Allure of the Seas and the Oasis of the Seas -- each held the honor of this title at the time of their launch, only to be dethroned shortly after in what seems like an endless race to build ever larger cruise ships.  Read more >>

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – It’s been here now for the past three weeks, and if you’ve not experienced the Twilight Electric Festival and the Showtime at the Pink Flamingo show at the Atlantis Resort, then you’re truly missing out.

There’s really no need to visit Las Vegas, when you can get far better entertainment in The Bahamas with a cabaret-style show that is coupled with Cirque-du-Soliel circus entertainment –  not to mention a Bahamian flair – simply by visiting the Atlantis Resort.

The Twilight Electric Festival is an entertainment and arts festival that offers guests and locals the opportunity to get their fill of a variety of palate-pleasing food and drinks at Paradise Harbour.

The area has been transformed to house a number of stalls, such as McKenzie’s conch salad, Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, a Village Burger Shack, fresh lemonade, popcorn and caramel corn, snow cones, cotton candy and an assortment of drinks.

But that’s not all.  Read more >>

Insight: Why Are We So Intent On Being A Latecomer To The Legalisation And Decriminalisation Of Marijuana?

Minister of Health, Dr. Duane Sands.

By MALCOLM STRACHAN

WHILE the US and Canada are raking in billions in profits from the marijuana industry, the Bahamian government continues to drag its feet on the issue. Since the CARICOM Regional Commission on Marijuana held a town meeting nearly a year and a half ago, there has been little to no movement on the matter.

Outside of forming the Bahamas National Marijuana Commission (BNMC), the government has not shown the fortitude to lead on this issue. Learned physicians such as Minister of Health Dr Duane Sands and Prime Minister Dr Hubert Minnis - who both know well the wide array of medicinal benefits of the plant - refuse to revisit our archaic policies.

We are literally watching the world pass us by as we remain paralysed, perhaps to avoid ruffling the feathers of the US where marijuana is yet to be federally legalised. However, lawmakers suspect that federal legalisation of marijuana is on its way.  Read more >>

Cerasee Pods

Cerasee - Caribbean Dictionary: "A vine bearing a small bumpy skinned yellow or orange fruit. The leaves are used to make a bitter herbal tea that is regarded for its medicinal and purgative properties."

Cerasee is a popular bush medicine used here in The Bahamas.  The vine with the leaves are boiled and used as a hot tea. Taste like hell. A true test of bravery and courage. lol.

The photo shows the fruit of the cerasee plant. The pods are ripe when orange and may be eaten. Just break open the pod with your fingers and eat the fruit inside. If left on the vine the pod will eventually burst open by itself.

Strangely, unlike the bitter cerasee, the fruit are sweet and consist of a red, sweet skin over a small, flattish seed that you spit out.  I ate that one on the left. 😃

'Critical Surgery' For Bahamian Economy

Jeffrey Beckles

Tribune Business Editor
nhartnell@tribunemedia.net

The Bahamas "must perform critical surgery on our economy" to return to the 3 percent-plus average GDP growth enjoyed pre-recession, the Chamber of Commerce's chief executive said yesterday.

Jeffrey Beckles told Tribune Business that 2018's 1.6 percent real GDP expansion, unveiled by the Department of Statistics on Monday, was "not sustainable" and inadequate to solve The Bahamas' pressing economic and social needs.

He added that the fact it had taken six years to return to 2012's economic output levels "spoke for itself" in terms of highlighting The Bahamas' economic "struggle" over the past decade since the 2008-2009 recession.

Arguing that three consecutive years of 1.6 percent GDP growth "won't do much for us", Mr Beckles said The Bahamas was well "past the time for talking" when it came to implementing real structural reform that removed obstacles to improving the cost and ease of doing business in this nation.  Read more >>

Rights Bahamas says ministers’ response to IACHR hearing is ‘petty and immature’

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The Rights Bahamas group did not waste any time on Tuesday, to slam Immigration Minister Brent Symonette and Attorney General Carl Bethel, for the comments they made following an Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) hearing, which highlighted the rights of migrants and their descendants in The Bahamas.

At the hearing held last week in Kingston, Jamaica, its President, Esmeralda Arosemena de Troitino, said detention was not the answer to tackle the country’s immigration challenges.

Troitino also touched on the issue of statelessness due to the lack of documentation.

On Monday, Immigration Minister Brent Symonette told the media that he has a difficulty with international organizations forcing their way of doing things on The Bahamas.

Also, while debating and later passing amendments to the Immigration Act in the Senate on Monday night, Attorney General Carl Bethel said the government will, in due course, put out a properly diplomatically worded statement to send to the IACHR, to indicate that the government feels that they may have gone a little too far in some of the rhetoric exchanged at the hearing.  Read more >>

The people of the Bahamas are what truly make the popular destination so uniquely magnetic.

Bahamian man breaks fresh raw coconut with sharp machete while smoking cigar outdoors.

By Jessica Bennett

I’ve been blessed to visit a gorgeous island or two in my day, which has left me with very distinct impressions of the local culture. The tantalizing allure of the Jamaican sun inspires sensual adventures while the soft sands of Barbados sweetly disarm you of whatever stress you foolishly brought along on your trip.

My first time in the Bahamas was no different; I immediately realized the people of Nassau, my home for four glorious days, make the popular destination so uniquely magnetic. There are beautiful beaches, amazing food and breathtaking sunsets throughout the Caribbean and South America, but the warmth and energy of Bahamians are unmatched.  Read more >>

Is It Abuse Or Is It Needed Discipline?

Dear Readers,

This is not a topic that we are thrilled about having to discuss again, but the events of the past week have made it very clear that this conversation needs to be had; openly and frequently. CHILD ABUSE – where do we draw the line?

This week there was yet another video of “child abuse” circulating around The Bahamas. The video depicts a young girl called Muffin crying, being shouted at, and then shouting back, and can be watched here

GBPA PRESS STATEMENT
The Bahamas – The Grand Bahama Port Authority, Limited (GBPA) under the powers vested in it by the Hawksbill Creek Agreement (HCA) has been and still is the sole regulator for all utilities in the Freeport zone since 1956.

As the utilities Regulatory Authority in the City of Freeport, GBPA in 2012, recognized that there was a need to strengthen the regulatory regime by implementing a Regulatory Framework and Operating Protocol (“Framework”) in accordance with international best practices. This Framework not only provides an objective and transparent process for rate setting, but also establishes a regime of efficiency and customer service standards designed to secure greater levels of customer protection. The Framework was, and remains, the first of its kind and the most advanced set of regulations within the Bahamas, which clearly outlines the expectations of GBPA as the regulator.

BREA Members return full slate of officers
With a booming market and more luxury developments coming on stream than ever before, real estate leaders warned hundreds this week that a new era of compliance regulations would force every firm dealing with property to focus on not just what it was selling, but who it was selling to.

“This has been another interesting year with many obstacles and challenges,” Bahamas Real Estate Association (BREA) President Christine Wallace-Whitfield told a packed house at the Nassau Yacht Club May 1 as the 800+-member organization held its annual general meeting. Record numbers turned out for what is considered the serious business highlight of the year for the real estate community but this year most subjects paled by comparison to the new issue of compliance.
Statement From Obie Roberts National Vice Chair PLP On Senate President Kay Forbes Smith And Carnival
The PLP takes note of the public report of the engagement of the Senate President Kay Forbes Smith as consultant to the Carnival Cruise Line, an applicant to the government of The Bahamas for permission to build a cruise port in Grand Bahama.

We have taken note of the Attorney General's statement defending the right to accept the consultancy on legal grounds. The Senate President defended the position on similar grounds as the Attorney General.

EARTHCARE participates in WORLDWIDE EVENTS TO END CAPTIVE WHALE AND DOLPHIN PROGRAMS
On May 11th 2019, Concerned citizens across the globe gathered for the 7th Annual Empty The Tanks Worldwide event. Thousands gathered in solidarity to bring awareness to the plight of captive whales and dolphins during this annual event, which spanned over 70 event locations across 25 countries.

EARTHCARE volunteers manned an information station in Freeport, Grand Bahama, to educate the public about captive whale and dolphin programs. Gail Woon, Founder of EARTHCARE, a former Dolphin Trainer shared her experiences and is adamant that dolphins can’t be kept happily in captivity. “EARTHCARE is vehemently against the introduction of any new captive dolphin facilities into the Bahamas”, she said. “Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphins travel up to 40 miles a day. They can dive to great depths and live in family units. To keep a marine mammal in captivity is a very tragic situation.” Her experiences can be found in an article by the Huffington Post, “Former Dolphin Trainer Speaks out on the Horrors of Captivity”. Savanna and Havana Gibson, Tyler Riley and Jahrin Ellis assisted with the EARTHCARE Empty the Tanks Information Station.

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL –May 15, 2019 – Guests were not dressed in formal wear or tuxes, but the evening was a grand, gala-style event aboard a Super Yacht in Miami, Florida for the launch of ‘Summertime in Freeport,’ a presentation of Bahamas Tourist Office, Florida.

The event, which promised a sneak preview of summertime fun and excitement in Freeport, Grand Bahama, drew travel agents, local South Florida influencers and media.  It featured a red-carpet entry boarding of the mega yacht, Seafair berthed at a port in downtown Miami, and a sail-away from the port for the evening’s affair.

The festivities aboard the yacht included a business-to-business (B2B) networking reception with Freeport destination vendors followed by a talk show format presentation, ‘Summertime in Freeport;’ an elegant dinner and dance, and culminated with the unique rhythmic sounds of Bahamian Junkanoo as the boat returned to its port.

The night was all about Freeport, the second major city of The Islands Of The Bahamas, and the promotional color of the Island, a bright orange, was the decorative theme.  Splashes of orange dominated the luxurious venue, but what said Freeport more than anything during the night was the 13-piece Royal Bahamas Police Pop Band (Grand Bahama division) that provided crowd pleasing entertainment at dining.

Described as highly successful, the event was organized by the marketing team of the Bahamas Tourist Office, Florida, under the leadership of their Director of Sales, Mrs. Betty Bethel-Moss.  A veteran in the Tourism Industry Bethel Moss is also a former Director for the Ministry of Tourism, Freeport, Grand Bahama.

The Talk show styled presentation, ‘Summertime in Freeport,’ featured an appearance by the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism and Aviation’s Deputy Director General (DDG), Ellison ‘Tommy’ Thompson.  The DDG spoke about the Ministry of Tourism’s goals and marketing strategy for the Freeport tourism product.  He also took time to briefly mention his ministry’s current Brand Campaign that features world class musical artist, Lenny Kravitz, who is also of Bahamian descent and a resident of The Bahamas.

Sanique Culmer of the Freeport (Grand Bahama) Tourist Office shared with those in attendance about all of the exciting ‘Summertime in Freeport’ cultural events and activities that will be taking place, during the months of July and August.  She spoke about the Goombay Summer Festival and the Junkanoo Summer Festival that will feature local cuisine, artisans, and entertainers, and in the case of the Junkanoo Summer Festival, six local groups providing competitive music and choreographed dancers.

Culmer also spoke about one of The Bahamas’ signature programs, “People to People,” which pairs visitors with local Bahamians who share a common interest or background, to allow the visitor to be a Bahamian for a day.

“Guests in attendance got a good taste of what the destination has to offer and we certainly gave them something to look forward to or to share with others to encourage them to visit our destination.  The Royal Bahamas Police Pop Band, Grand Bahama district did an outstanding job with bringing the sounds of our Island and the menu, which included blackened grouper, depicted the flavors of Grand Bahama.”

A native of Freeport, Churchill joked that “For a minute, being a Grand Bahamian, I thought I was home; particularly with Sands beer being on the menu of beverages that was available.”

“Thanks to this event, we in Freeport will be looking forward to welcoming travel professionals and their clients, bloggers, influencers and the like, to our destination very soon so that they will really see, touch, taste and feel all of what they got a peek of, but so much more,” Churchill said.
