If you feel a sense of excitement building, it usually portends the beginning of something dramatic, something unexpected, or something new. Tourism Adventures Limited captures all three.

“And it’s only the beginning!” enthused young Bahamian entrepreneur, Tyrone Sawyer II, director and chief operation officer, speaking on behalf of the founding shareholders group of Tourism Adventures Limited.

But it is more than just a beginning; it is a new beginning. You see, Tyrone’s dad (and namesake) was the entrepreneur behind – and founding president of – Bahamas Fast Ferries Services Limited which introduced a 35 knots per hour, high speed inter-island ferry service between Nassau, Spanish Wells and Harbour Island and Eleuthera in 1999. And “Bo Hengy” was his great grandfather. This provides a strong working knowledge to guide the success of the Tourism Adventures Limited model.  Read more >>

You’ve seen them on TV, popular televangelists who preach the gospel to millions around the world. You may be surprised that these men of God are living a lifestyle few could imagine. Jesse Duplantis and Kenneth Copeland drive fancy cars and live in lavish mansions. They also fly in private jets. It's impossible to know exactly how much money these ministries take in each year because they are not required to make financial disclosures of donations they receive and all of it is tax exempt.

Hong Kong (CNN)When feudal Japan's most powerful warlord Nobunaga Oda met Yasuke, a black slave-turned-retainer, in 1581, he believed the man was a god.

Oda had never seen an African before. And like the locals in Japan's then-capital of Kyoto, he was awed by Yasuke's height, build and skin tone, according to Thomas Lockley, the author of "African Samurai: The True Story of Yasuke, a Legendary Black Warrior in Feudal Japan."  Read more >>

Ringplay Productions Announces THE ODD COUPLE (Female Version)!

In 1985, Neil Simon returned to his classic 1965 play and reworked it for an all-female cast. He didn't just change the characters. He changed some of the situations and some of the themes. The one thing he didn't change was the comedy ...

Florence Unger and Olive Madison are head to head in Neil Simon’s hilarious contemporary comic classic: the female version of The Odd Couple. Instead of the poker party that begins the original version, Ms. Madison has invited the girls over for an evening of Trivial Pursuit. The Pidgeon sisters have been replaced by the two Costazuela brothers. But the hilarity remains the same.
Jovanna Hepburn encapsulates the highly-strung neurotic tendencies of 'Florence' while Patrice Francis and Sania Johnson-Duncombe (not at the same time) portray the untidy, unconcerned 'Olive'. The group of ladies feature a talented cast of Nicole Musgrove, Stazzie Appleyard, Yasmin Glinton, Arthellia Powell Isaacs and Sarah Burnett. James Knight and D. Sean Nottage are the quirky Spanish brothers.
Directed by Erin McKinney, The Odd Couple runs in the Philip A. Burrows Black Box Theatre, May 24-26 and May 31-June 2.
From top: Neil Simon, playwright; Jovanna Hepburn and Patrice Francis as Florence and Olive - Francis plays Olive during the first weekend; Jovanna Hepburn and Sania Johnson-Duncombe as Florence and Olive - Johnson-Duncombe plays Olive during the second weekend.

Managing Conflict

Barrington H. Brennen, MA, NCP,
 By Barrington H. Brennen

When conflict gets in our way it really messes us up.

True, some kinds of conflict we cannot avoid. However, effective management of the conflict is what’s most important.  Conflict need not escalate into vitriolic or belligerent behavior.  Conflict need not reach the point of physical confrontation of any kind.

In intimate partner relationships, conflict can be ugly, but it does not have to cause life-long pain.  In the book Empowering Couples by Dr. David Olsen, he outlines five conflict resolution styles especially in relationships.  Here they are:

First, are the PURSUERS.  These are those who seek to create connections so they can become more intimate and closer. Because talking and expressing feelings is important to them, they tend to feel rejected by their partner if the partner wants more space. When the partner . . . in their lives withdraws, pursuers will tend to pursue more intensely."  Read more >>

An Allen Cay iguana strolling along the beach. PER BREIEHAGEN/GETTY IMAGES

AMONG THE MOST POPULAR TOURIST attractions in the Exumas—a chain of more than 365 tiny islands, or cays, in the Bahamas—are the famous swimming pigs. But for those who prefer to glimpse the native wildlife, iguanas are the real stars.

An endangered subspecies of iguana called the Allen Cays rock iguana has drawn John Iverson, a biology professor from Earlham College in Indiana, to the Exumas for the past four decades. These iguanas were once confined to just two islands, Leaf Cay and U Cay, but by the late 1990s Iverson noticed some had spread to nearby islands, especially Allen Cay. The simple explanation was that winds and currents had whisked baby iguanas across the 300-foot-wide channel separating Leaf and Allen Cays. There was just one problem: The iguanas on Allen Cay were relative giants, twice as long and six times as heavy as their counterparts on other islands.  Read more >>
