The HATE is VENOMOUS!
Dear Readers,

This week we saw a post by Fred Smith on his social media page click here to see post

The post is an exerpt from his speech at IACHR (The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights) in Kingston Jamaica on May 10, 2019 by him and his organization, Rights Bahamas, discussing the treatment of migrants in The Bahamas.  There have been numerous accounts about the Rights Bahamas trip to these meetings and lots of hostility about what they said, especially what people perceived as demeaning about The Bahamas.

Prime Minister outlines plans to enhance lives of Bahamians
Making good on his promise to impact the lives of Bahamians, Prime Minister the Most Hon. Dr. Hubert Minnis outlined areas of transformation, in an address to the nation, toward this end.

It was his third National Address for 2019, delivered on Monday, May 20; and the final in a series of such reports, in which he outlined land reform, renewable energy and modernization of public services in a digital global world.

“These reports are intended to provide updates on how your government is working for you.
SBDC assists “Shiver” in accessing over 150,000 dollars in capital.
The Access Accelerator Small Business Development Centre (SBDC) has assisted another small business with accessing capital. Shiver, a local sorbet and ice-cream brand, received access to $100,000 in loans from Royal Bank Bahamas (RBC), $50,000 in equity investments from Bahamas Entrepreneurial Venture Fund and $11,600 in grant funding from the Government of The Bahamas.

Founders and CEOs of the company, Melissa Darville and Elvis Percentie, described the news as exciting and another reason to be grateful.

“We are excited”, said Percentie. "I was driving when Melissa called to tell me that they announced we had received the funding. I had to pull to the side of the road and check my phone just to see it for myself. I'm a numbers guy, so I've already started calculating where this and that would go, but it's exciting, and we're grateful.”

ALL FEMALE FISHING ‘BABES’ TO RAISE MONEY FOR ROTARY
The Bones Babes, an all Bahamian female fishing team, are preparing to head back on the boat for the 2019 Harbourside Marine, Tuna Classic. This year, they plan to fish while raising money for a great cause and showing the guys that they can fish too!

The 2019 Tuna Classic, a fundraiser for the Bahamas East Rotary Club, will be held over two days, May 24th and 25th. With six weigh in stations throughout the islands of Nassau, Abaco, Freeport, Eleuthera, Bimini, and the Berry islands. There is an official start of 6am on the Friday morning, and fish must be weighed in by the Weighmaster at each island’s station. Teams from all over The Bahamas will compete for the largest: Tuna, Dolphin, Wahoo, Snapper/Grouper categories, with overall points determining the winning boat.
Rights Bahamas backs independent investigation into police shootings
Rights Bahamas supports the call from leader of the opposition Philip Davis for an outside agency to investigate the recent police shootings of three men in eastern New Providence.

We have long said that the police cannot police themselves and in the face of claims that, contrary to the official version of events, the men were unarmed and therefore killed in cold blood, an independent and objective probe is absolutely necessary.

We suggest that a reputable overseas private investigation company be engaged by the government to look into this and all other cases like it. The company should be tasked with producing a detailed report of the incident after conducting witness interviews, interviews with the officers, an examination of the physical evidence, including the weapons purported to have been fired by the deceased men, ballistics tests and whatever other forms of forensic studies are necessary to get to the truth.

The first stop was to view the Reverse Osmosis (RO) Plant in Waterford, which will service four settlements. The plant also features a storage tank with the capacity of 120,000 gallons as back up for up to four days. Currently, the plant services 800 customers. Mr. Gibson said that improvement of services on the island is in keeping with the Government’s objectives of supplying optimal water services.

Royal Caribbean partners with Bahamas Feeding Network, pledges food for entire year 2019
On a sunny afternoon in November, Royal Caribbean International President & CEO Michael Bayley stood in the AquaTheater of Symphony of The Seas, the largest cruise ship in the world as it made its inaugural visit to Nassau, and before an audience of hundreds including volunteers from one of the destination’s most challenged communities made a promise – to fund all the food needed by the Bahamas Feeding Network in 2019.

The applause that erupted was louder than a ship’s horn and all the music the bands and Junkanoo groups had made during the celebration. There were tears on the faces of those touched by the compassion and the promise.
This week, the Bahamas Feeding Network sent a message back to Bayley and to Royal Caribbean.

By ianthia

One of the most annoying interesting questions I receive when I tell people that I work for myself as a freelance media professional and writer is, “So…how do you make money?” That, coupled with the deflated, “I pity this girl” look on their face really strike the heart.

And you know what, I get it! I’m one of those people who have ventured into the untraditional and have made it my normal. Some of my family members are still grasping at straws trying to figure out what I do all damn day and how it is that I’m able to travel, shop and do more than I did on my 9 to 5.
Well, here’s the tea…lean in!  Read more >>

Nature doesn’t wait for June 1.

Predictions state that the climate crisis could make hurricane season longer and more intense.

By Alex Schwartz

With the formation (and subsequent dissipation) of Subtropical Storm Andrea on Monday, 2019’s hurricane season got off to an early start—just like in 2018. And 2017. And 2016. And 2015. That means a record five years in a row have seen a named storm form before June 1, the official start date of Atlantic hurricane season.  Read more >>

Anthony "Skeebo" Roberts at work on A Disconnected Heart, Ringplay Productions, May 2018

Why we need your talent, enthusiasm, and commitment:

Because Shakespeare in Paradise 2018's Short Tales was such a success last year, we're doing it again. We want to feature the work of different writers, and we also want to give budding directors experience in working with scripts that are not their own.
As we move to put together our series of 10 short plays by different playwrights, we also need to find directors for these works.

Each director may be assigned up to two of the scripts. Apply now—don't be shy!

Erin McKinney directs The Odd Couple (female version), Ringplay Productions, May 2019.

How to apply

Are you a director? Send us your CV!

Are you a wannabe director? Let us know what you've done on stage OR screen!
We'll meet with writers and directors at the beginning of June, so that we can make final tweaks to the scripts and assign them to their directors. We'll workshop the scripts as needed in June. Auditions are in mid-July. Rehearsals start at the end of July. Short Tales 2019 opens on September 30.
Send your resume!

Philip A. Burrows and Adrian Archer direct the choir for The Legend of Sammie Swain, Shakespeare in Paradise, October 2013.

I remember being in preschool and my family entering me into these kiddie pageants. I half loved them and half hated them, but I did them anyway. I also remember this one year when I placed second runner up and missed the crown and sash by a hair.

Well just a few weeks ago I joked with my new family at Kelly’s House and Home, that I can finally bring my mother’s pageant queen dreams to life; I’d just won the title of Kelly’s 2018 Bride of the Year and finally…finally got to take home my very own crown and sash!  Read more >>
