Was Abraham Lincoln an Atheist?

Abraham Lincoln
As a young man, Lincoln openly admitted to his lack of faith. As a politician, he refused to say he was a Christian.

By Becky Little

Every U.S. president has been a member of a church, except for one: Abraham Lincoln.

Famously opaque on the subject of religion, Lincoln’s personal faith was something even his closest friends said they couldn’t figure out. Though he became more interested in religious questions toward the end of his life, “Honest Abe” never directly identified himself as a Christian—even after he realized it could hurt him politically.

“He once spoke of how not having any kind of noticeable religious profile had levied what he called a tax on his popularity with the voters,” says Allen Guelzo, a professor of Civil War-era studies at Gettysburg College and author of Abraham Lincoln: Redeemer President. “It was something that he was aware of, something he tried to cope with, and yet he wouldn’t go the distance of trying to pretend that he was something that he wasn’t.”  Read more >>

he Bahamas Maritime Authority (BMA) is pleased to announce that for the 17th consecutive year, The Bahamas has been included on the Paris MoU port state inspection whitelist of flag state performance and has moved up six places, securing the number two spot. This accomplishment comes on the heel of The Bahamas flag having achieved a record low number of detentions worldwide.

The Bahamas’ Minister for Transport and Local Government, Honourable Renward Wells comments: “The BMA’s impressive track record of delivering a quality service, as demonstrated by this positive outcome, is remarkable and one that The Bahamas, our customers and industry partners should be extremely proud of.” Adding to this, the BMA’s Chair, Mrs J. Denise Lewis-Johnson says: “Port state inspection is one of the recognised industry indicators of quality performance and this achievement by The Bahamas, within Paris MOU ports, once again demonstrates the BMA’s commitment to the highest standards and is evidence of our ships adhering to these standards.”  Read more >>

THE Bahamas will remain in zone III of the Americas Davis Cup tie for another year after the team of Philip Major Jr, Baker Newman, Justin Lunn and Donte Armbrister had to settle for a sixth-place finish at the Costa Rica Country Club in Escazu, San Jose, Costa Rica.

In their bid to get promoted to zone II over the weekend, captain Marvin Rolle watched as the Bahamas ended up in third place in Pool A after losing 3-0 to Puerto Rico on Friday in the final game of their round robin play.

Matched against Honduras, the third place finishers out of Pool B, the Bahamas only played the two singles, losing both in their classification playoff matchup on Saturday.

The loss dropped the Bahamas to sixth place.  Read more >>

By Alexander Britell

Royal Caribbean opened eyes earlier this year when it submitted a letter of intent to purchase The Bahamas’ Grand Lucayan resort, the first move of its kind for the company.

Now, the company is shedding some light on the decision, which is part of what will be a major new push across the region to go beyond cruise ports into full-fledged “destinations.”

Royal Caribbean has announced plans to team with ITM Group to form a new “destination” company called Holistica.

The company will create an “inclusive model for destination development that works holistically to meet the needs of coastal communities, local governments, and land, sea, and air travelers,” according to a statement.  Read more >>

Do Not Put Your Child’s Grades on Social Media

Barrington Brennen
I have noticed something that, during recent years, has become one of my concerns.  It is how freely parents display their children’s end-of-term school grades, and sometimes the actual report cards on FaceBook and other social media sites.  Each time I see this I ask the question: “Why are these parents doing this?”

Is the displaying of grades on social media too much information to share?  Yes.  I remember when the world was private.  Certain parts of our lives were not known to the world.  Now we are living in a digital world, and without a cost we can actually expose ourselves to the world.   Things like when we are on a vacation, out shopping, what we just bought from a store, etc.   I like the idea of sharing, but how much is too much?

When it comes to displaying one’s little child’s grades on FaceBook, it is my view that doing this can be in the long run, emotionally wounding to the child. Actually, most times it is just boosting the parent’s ego.  “See how good MY CHILD is.”  I am also troubled when I see college students put their Grade Point Average (GPA) on Facebook and boast of being on the Dean’s List or Principal’s List, etc.  Read more >>

Following a visit by Georgia State University to The Bahamas last October, the institution and the Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI) have since signed a Memorandum of Cooperation to initiate formal discussions on a collaboration that would afford BTVI students the option to continue their studies at the tier one research institution in Atlanta, Georgia.

The agreement was signed at Georgia State University during a recent visit by a BTVI delegation including the President, Dr. Robert W. Robertson; Chairman, Kevin Basden; Academic Dean, Dr. Pleshette McPhee and Dean of Student Services, Racquel Bethel.

The agreement will also facilitate discussions on the development of faculty training opportunities for BTVI instructors, as well as faculty and student exchanges.

Georgia State University’s Associate Provost for International Initiatives, Dr.  Wolfgang Schlör, hosted the delegation and expressed his admiration of BTVI’s vision and its contributions to skills development in The Bahamas. He noted that there is a good alignment between Georgia State’s College to Career focus and BTVI, highlighting the participation of the university’s Perimeter College and online campus.  He expressed anticipation for what he hopes will be a productive partnership with BTVI.

In response, Dr. Robertson expressed the importance of collaborating with Georgia State, a university that uniquely confers associates degrees alongside other degrees in the United States. This attribute, in his opinion, is a highlight of this developing collaboration and speaks to the value of a BTVI education.
According to Dr. Robertson, “Georgia State University is a top quality comprehensive, research institution in the Atlanta area and is highly respected for its research and student success efforts. We are excited about this partnership and look forward to BTVI students transitioning smoothly to this university in the future.”

Amanda Lindroth is turning her Bahamas-based design business into a brand - PODCAST

“My mother was a particularly glamorous woman,” says Nassau-based interior designer Amanda Lindroth, when asked about her upbringing in Boca Raton. “She was tall and skinny and had a lot of opinions and a cigarette. … She said to my father: ‘We’re not rich enough to live in a mansion in Palm Beach and I’m not going to live in a lousy Florida ranch house,’ so she hired a very interesting Danish architect.” Glamour, real estate real talk and a taste of modern European architecture: the perfect ingredients for a designer’s childhood.

After first working as a journalist and PR consultant in London, Lindroth followed a husband to the Bahamas and set up a design business in the late 1990s. Since then, she has slowly built a reputation for her evocation of the island spirit wherever she goes. A few years ago, almost on a whim, Lindroth and her CEO, Austin Painter, went on a road trip through China, visiting factories and creating a collection of pieces to launch a product line. After a runaway success at the Atlanta Gift Show (they’ve sold 120,000 pieces to date), she has been busy turning her collection into a fully fledged brand.  Read more >>

The Parental Guide to Surviving Summer
Dear Readers,
School is out and Summer 2019 is officially in full swing. For young people, summer brings with it a sense of freedom: No need to wake up early, no uniforms and NO HOMEWORK! But for parents, summer break can be a huge adjustment. From figuring out what to feed your children, to finding a safe and fun environment for them to be in while you're at work; summer can be stressful.
As usual, this year scores of youth-based organizations, churches, sports organizations, and nonprofits are all doing their part to make summer a little easier on parents looking to keep their kids active and engaged. We know it can be a little overwhelming to sift through all the potential camp options so our editorial team thought we'd put together a parental survival guide with some popular safe options for you!

C.A. Smith Bahamas new Governor General
Cornelius A. Smith was sworn in as the 11th governor general of The Bahamas in a ceremony in Parliament Square today.

He succeeds Dame Marguerite Pindling, who demitted office earlier today after serving for just under five years.

In his inaugural speech, Smith pledged to discharge his constitutional duties with impartiality.

“I dedicate myself to helping to promote and renew a greater national commitment to community service and volunteerism,” Smith said.

PM says Government Will Ensure Bahamians Access Crown Land
Prime Minister the Most Hon. Dr. Hubert Minnis announced that his government has embarked on an ambitious effort to ensure Bahamians have greater access to Crown Land.

Contributing to the 2019/20 Budget Debate in the House of Assembly on Wednesday, June 19, he also stated that his government would promote access to Crown Land for development of preschools, especially on the Family Islands.
Where there is no vision, the people sweat!
The rash of power outages spreading across The Bahamas is highly unacceptable. The excuses that have been proffered are nothing more than a continuation of excuses that have marked the incompetence that has been going on at BPL/BEC for decades. The question is, will anyone be held accountable for this fiasco? Will anyone be held accountable to The Bahamian people?

This perennial debacle is a reflection of inept government policies and decisions that are made based on political expediency and relationships with special interests who benefit from these government policies. The Bahamian people are sick and tired and have had enough of the suffering that has been inflicted upon them by successive PLP and FNM administrations. Every year, millions of dollars are paid by the Bahamian people in the form of taxes and fees for inconsistent essential services. Special interests have continued to get wealthier off the backs of poor and working-class Bahamians who could ill afford these outrageously high electricity costs, much less the standby generators that the wealthy use to avoid the inconveniences at BPL.

Regatta Time Again on Grand Bahama Island
It’s Regatta Time again! All across the country, Bahamians are gathering to celebrate our annual down-home traditions, with sloop sailing, Bahamian music, crafts, food, and more.

This year, the 24th Grand Bahama Regatta & Homecoming is slated to take place in the historic Smith’s Point community over a six-day period, starting July 14 and ending July 20. During that time, Grand Bahamians will have access to a series of events, including a church service to take place at the St. Cleveland Baptist Church in Freetown on Sunday, July 14 and a major opening ceremony and performance planned for Friday, July 19.
Statement From The Chairman Of The PLP
On Minister Of Works Latest Excuse For Power Failure
If the matter of the power blackouts in New Providence by the Bahamas Power and Light Company were not so serious, you would laugh at the sheer incompetence of this FNM government.

The latest bit of comedy was from the Minister responsible for BPL. While the Bahamian people were sweating away in the heat from BPL's load shedding, the Minister's best defence was that it was worse under the PLP. This is so tiresome now. The fact that people have no power today has nothing to do with the PLP.

Campbell toasts ‘mentor and friend’ during farewell reception for PS Sherrylee Smith
Minister of Social Services and Urban Development, the Hon. Frankie A. Campbell toasted retiring Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Social Services and Urban Development, Ms. Sherrylee Smith, as a “mentor and friend.”

Senior government officials from across the Bahamas Public Service joined counterparts and colleagues from the Ministry of Social Services and Urban Development in paying “the proper tribute” to Permanent Secretary Smith (Friday, June 21) during a Retirement Luncheon held in Ms. Smith’s honour in the Public Hearing Room, Aventura Plaza.
Bud Light Kicks Off the summer with the Dive Bar Tour and Willis & the Illest Band
We all have one, our favorite Dive-Bar. It’s the place you retreat to after a long day; where the bartender knows you by name, where the Bud Light on tap is always ice cold, and where your favorite music is always in rotation. This summer, dive-bars around New Providence will become ground zero for the hottest mini concert series to
hit the island. The music-themed series is the latest in an exciting line of promotions backed by the Bud Light Brand and the Bahamian Brewery &Beverage Company - the country’s only authorized Bud Light distributor.

“We’re very proud to be the local distributor of Bud Light in the Bahamas and we’re constantly looking for new, creative and fun ways to promote the brand locally,” said BBB Executive Marketing Manager Wellington Seymour.
SIR JACK’S
SOCCER CAMP
BACK ON NEXT WEEK
Sir Jack Hayward was known for his love of Football, or Soccer. Before his passing he was so proud of the work the Freeport Rugby and Football Club (FRFC) was doing to promote and improve his beloved sport in Grand Bahama, often coming out on the first day, kicking the ball around, and posing for photos. Now going 16 years strong, the FRFC Soccer Camp will once again be held on Monday July 1st to Friday July 5th.

“This camp is truly the best deal on the island for the summer,” said Rob Speller, FRFC President. “Attendance is being pegged at 100 this year, and those parents who want their children to take part need to act quickly to ensure all the places are not already filled.”

Sands Wants to Save our Bahama Land
Glass bottles are recyclable. Typically bottles are made with between 20 and 30 percent recycled material. This is good news for our emerging green country, but glass is heavy and can be hard to transport. Despite this fact, the Bahamian Brewery and Beverage team will launch recycling of their beer bottles in the Abacos on July 16th, 2019.

“We have been recycling bottles in Freeport for the past 11 years and in Nassau for the past 9 years,” said Gary Sands, the General Manager for Bahamian Brewery and Beverage. “Last year was a major accomplishment to the recycling program as we collected just over 50% of the bottles we sold to the market. With the launch of Abaco we hope to reach 60-65% this year.”
